The group rode eastward along the official road, their hooves flying and dust billowing.

The closer they got to Hezhou, the denser the pedestrians and caravans became on the road, a stark contrast to the desolate landscape of Lianhai County, where one could hardly see a single living person for half a day.

Three days later, the outline of Hezhou City finally emerged from the horizon.

The city walls were towering and the crenellations were neat, making them many times more impressive than the low walls of small county towns like Yunxi City.

Soldiers stood guard on both sides of the city gate, checking pedestrians entering the city. Yue Pengniao flashed his Qianhu waist badge, and the group passed through the city gate without any hindrance.

The city's prosperity made Lin Mo narrow his eyes slightly.

Shops lined both sides of the main street, with banners fluttering in the breeze. Shops selling porcelain, silk, cosmetics, and stationery were one after another.

The streets were crowded with people, including peddlers carrying loads and hawking their wares, wealthy merchants in sedan chairs, caravans of Western Region merchants leading camels, and even a few blond-haired, blue-eyed foreigners drinking tea in a teahouse.

Compared to this place, Lianhai County is practically a slum.

The Yue family's residence was located in the most prosperous area in the east of Hezhou City. It occupied a vast area, and the stone lions in front of the gate were even more imposing than those in front of the Lianhai County Government Office. The vermilion gate was inlaid with brass rivets, and the threshold was so high that it could trip a child.

The servants at the gate saw Yue Pengniao dismount and rushed to help him up, saying, "The Third Young Master is back."

Yue Pengniao straightened the armor of the thousand-household commander and whispered to Lin Mo:

"My lord, I sent a message to my father before we set off. He should be waiting in the main hall by now."

However, he's a bit of a snob, and his words might not be very pleasant; please bear with him.

Lin Mo smiled but didn't say anything.

Snobbish? Haven't he seen enough snobbish people already?

When he used to deliver food, he would encounter people's tactless treatment eight hundred times a day.

His space now contains a complete set of modern industrial product samples; any one of them would be enough for businessmen of this era to kneel down and call him "father."

Step into Yuefu.

Yue Wanjin was indeed waiting in the main hall.

This man, one of the top three richest merchants in Hezhou, was an old man in his early sixties. His white goatee was neatly trimmed, and he wore a dark red silk robe with floral patterns. He held a string of amber prayer beads in his hand and sat upright in a grand chair.

Sitting next to him was a young man in his thirties, who looked about five or six parts like him, but was thinner. He was wearing a moon-white scholar's robe and holding a cup of tea. He was Yue Pengju, the elder brother of Yue Pengniao.

As soon as Yue Pengniao entered, he knelt on one knee and gave a military salute:

"Father, elder brother, this is Lin Molin, the magistrate of Lianhai County."

Lin Mo bowed respectfully, his manners were proper but neither servile nor arrogant.

Yue Wanjin didn't even lift his buttocks, but just nodded slightly. His gaze swept over Lin Mo from head to toe. Lin Mo was wearing a simple blue robe. The material was not bad, but it was by no means good either. There was no jade pendant at his waist and no thumb ring on his hand. He looked no different from an ordinary poor scholar.

He curled his lips down slightly, exchanged a few casual pleasantries, then picked up his teacup and slowly sipped his tea, his perfunctory attitude making no attempt to hide it.

The bird was getting anxious and was about to say a few good words for Lin Mo, but Lin Mo spoke first.

He took something out of his sleeve and placed it on the coffee table. It was a bar of soap, the packaging of which had been torn off. Its surface was smooth as jade, and its color was a pale milky white. It emitted a delicate jasmine fragrance.

Yue Wanjin's gaze fell on the bar of soap, and he could tell at a glance that it was something special; he had never seen anything like it before.

Seeing this, Lin Mo nodded to the Yue Peng bird, who immediately handed the soap to his father.

Wan Jin reached out and picked up the soap, brought it to his nose and smelled it; the fragrance was delicate and not pungent.

For a moment, he couldn't figure out what it was for!

"What is this?"

Yue Wanjin's voice finally carried a hint of genuine respect.

"Soap. Used for washing hands and bathing. It is a hundred times cleaner than soapberry. After washing, the skin is not dry or rough, and the fragrance can last all day."

Lin Mo said calmly, "Master Yue might as well give it a try."

Yue Wanjin, still somewhat skeptical, had his maid bring him a basin of warm water.

He wet his hands, rubbed the soap in his palms twice, and after just two rubs, white foam quickly welled up, as delicate as whipped cream, many times more than the pitiful amount of foam from the soap pod.

He rubbed the foam in his hands, rinsed it with water, and held his hand up to the light. He was stunned.

Those hands, over sixty years old, with ink and tea stains that had accumulated between their fingers for years, were now completely clean, and the skin felt smooth and supple to the touch. It didn't look like they had just washed their hands; rather, it looked like they had become ten years younger.

He brought his arm to his nose and smelled it again. The jasmine fragrance clung firmly to his skin, and became even more delicate after being rinsed with water.

"This...this"

Yue Wanjin held the bar of soap, turning it over and over as if it were some rare treasure.

Yue Pengju, who was standing to the side, also put down his teacup, came over, took the soap and examined it carefully. He then washed his hands, just like his father. After washing them, he stared at his clean hands for several breaths.

The father and son exchanged a glance, both seeing shock in each other's eyes.

Lin Mo didn't give them time to process what was happening. He took out two more items from his sleeve and gently placed them on the coffee table.

One is a small glass bottle, as clear as water, with a smooth, mirror-like surface, free of any bubbles or impurities, containing a pale green liquid;

The other was a glass of the same material, with walls so thin they were almost transparent. In the sunlight, it refracted a tiny rainbow of light, which fell on the rosewood table and trembled slightly as the bottle was gently shaken.

Yue Wanjin's eyeballs almost popped out of their sockets.

He had been in business all his life, and had seen crystal, glass, and all sorts of strange and wonderful glassware brought by foreign merchants.

But those things all had color, weren't transparent enough, and had bubbles and impurities. Compared to these two transparent vessels in front of us, they were like rubble compared to pearls.

He didn't care about putting on airs. He excitedly stood up, strode forward, and carefully picked up the glass with trembling fingers. He turned it in the sunlight, and the light shone through the glass, casting a colorful halo in his palm.

Even crystal isn't this clear; this thing is practically solidified from the purest mountain spring water.

Yue Pengju then picked up the small glass bottle, uncorked it, and a rich, unfamiliar fragrance instantly filled the entire main hall.

The fragrance was several times stronger than the jasmine soap from before, carrying an inexplicable sense of nobility, and was completely different from those perfumes made with lard and perfume powder.

He poured a drop onto his wrist, gently rubbed it in, and the fragrance lingered for a long time without leaving any greasy residue on his skin.

"What is this?"

Yue Pengju's voice changed tone.

"Floral water. One drop can keep you smelling fresh all day."

Lin Mo then took out a moisturizer, a glass mirror, and a lighter from his sleeve in that order.

With each item taken out, the Yue father and son's breathing quickened.

The moisturizer melted when applied to the back of my hand, instantly making my dry, chapped skin smooth;

When you look into a glass mirror, you can see even your pores clearly; it's hundreds of times clearer than a bronze mirror.

With a gentle press of the lighter, a pale blue and crimson flame flickers gently;

Yue Wanjin touched each of these things over and over again, gasping in shock with each one he touched.
