The sky outside the window is gradually brightening.

The electronic pulses from the monitor filled the room steadily, one after another. Xue Shanshan's eyelids twitched, then twitched again. Her consciousness crept back from the depths of her being, hazy and indistinct, the first thing she perceived being a dull pain in her left abdomen.

It's not intense, but it just lingers there, pressing down and suffocating.

It took her several seconds to fully open her eyes.

A white ceiling. Not the kind that's yellowed and water-stained like in a rental apartment. The air is thick with the smell of disinfectant. An IV line is inserted into the back of my left hand, the needle held in place by clear tape, and the surrounding skin is covered with light bruising.

hospital.

Memories are pieced together piece by piece.

I was riding an electric scooter. There was a protruding manhole cover on the road. The handlebars swerved. My left side hit the ground. My stomach hurt terribly. I got home. And then—

I don't remember anything.

She turned her head with difficulty.

Then I froze.

Li Yichen sat in the chaise longue, his head tilted to the side, asleep. His coat was draped over his knees in a crumpled mess, his shirt even more wrinkled, the sleeves rolled up to his forearms. A light layer of bluish stubble appeared on his chin.

This posture was maintained for a long time. It's obvious.

Xue Shanshan's mind went completely blank.

Five seconds.

For a full five seconds, she stared at that face with her mouth agape, unable to move a single finger.

"Brother Li...?"

The sounds that came out of his throat were hoarse beyond recognition.

Li Yichen's eyelashes trembled slightly.

Open your eyes.

Without any lingering confusion, his pupils focused instantly when they met her gaze. He straightened up, leaning forward slightly, and braced himself against the armrest.

"woke up?"

Two words: clean and efficient.

Xue Shanshan's lips moved as if she wanted to say something, but her throat was so dry that she couldn't squeeze out a single syllable.

Li Yichen has already stood up.

I poured half a glass of warm water from the bedside table, reached out a hand, gently cradled the back of her head, and brought the rim of the glass to her lips. The warmth of my hand seeped through her hair.

Xue Shanshan took a few small sips.

The moment the water slid down her throat, her eyes suddenly stung with tears, without warning.

"What... happened to me?"

Li Yichen put the cup back on the bedside table and sat down on the edge of the chair.

"I fell off my bike and hit my abdomen, rupturing my spleen. I had surgery last night and am fine now."

Just these few sentences.

His tone was as light as if he were saying the weather was nice today. He deliberately skipped over the part about the blood bank being in dire need of blood, the part about urgently finding people to donate blood at 1 a.m., and the part about "it would have been a disaster if it had been ten minutes later".

After hearing this, Xue Shanshan bit her lower lip and remained silent.

But tears kept falling, unstoppable.

"Don't cry." Li Yichen frowned. "The doctor said you can't have too much emotional fluctuation. Your wound was just stitched up."

Xue Shanshan sniffed hard and raised the back of her hand to wipe the water from her face. The movement pulled at her abdomen, causing her to hiss in pain and flinch.

Li Yichen reached out and pressed down on her shoulder, his grip firm but not too strong, to stop her from moving. With his other hand, he pulled two tissues from the bedside table and handed them to her.

Xue Shanshan took it and wiped her eyes haphazardly. Tears were still flowing, but she could barely make a sound.

"What are you doing here?"

Li Yichen stepped back into the companion chair, leaned against the back, and stretched his legs out in front of him.

"It was your roommate who called me."

Xue Shanshan was stunned for a moment.

Lin Qingqing went through her phone's contact list.

That one that's pinned to the top.

The one pinned above my parents' names.

Blood rushed to his face. From his neck to the tips of his ears, it burned intensely, and even the patient's pale complexion couldn't hide it.

She buried her face in the blanket.

"You...you've been sitting here all night?" The muffled voice leaked from under the cotton cloth.

"Um."

One word.

Xue Shanshan shrank even deeper into the blankets. After several seconds, a pair of red eyes peeked out from above the edge of the blankets, and she whispered a sentence.

"Thank you, Brother Li."

So soft it was almost inaudible.

Li Yichen didn't respond to that. He stood up, slung his coat over his shoulder, and patted the wrinkles off his shirt.

"This happened on your way home from get off work, so it's considered a work-related injury. The company will cover all medical expenses, so you don't need to worry about anything."

He paused.

"I contacted your parents last night; they might come to Shanghai today. Take good care of yourself and go back to work when you've recovered."

Xue Shanshan opened her mouth, but all the words stuck in her throat, swirling around before finally turning into a choked "Mmm".

Li Yichen walked to the door, put his hand on the handle, and opened the door.

The morning light streamed in through the corridor window, falling on his shoulders, a dazzling white expanse.

He turned around and glanced at Xue Shanshan.

"Get some rest. Contact me if you need anything—"

There was a pause.

A slight twitch appeared at the corner of his mouth.

"Anyway, my account is pinned to the top of your chat list, so you can find it."

Xue Shanshan's face exploded with shock, and she wished she could cover herself with the blanket from head to toe.

The door closed.

The footsteps faded into the distance in the corridor.

Xue Shanshan buried her face in the side of the pillow, her heart pounding so hard it hurt her ribs. It hurt even more than a wound.

Outside.

Li Yichen stopped at the window at the end of the corridor. The morning light shone on his face, and he finally felt sleepy. He hadn't slept well all night; his neck and back were stiff and sore.

He rubbed the back of his neck and took out his phone.

Two messages.

The first message was posted by Ji Yanran at 4 AM: "Is the surgery over? How is she?"

The second item was a system log pushed by Ling'er: "The production line on the 66th floor is in normal condition. The sixth set of armor has entered the painting stage."

He replied to Ji Yanran with three words: "It's alright."

I put my phone back in my pocket and walked towards the elevator.

As he passed the nurses' station, he called out to the nurse on duty, took a business card out of his pocket, and placed it on the table.

"Xue Shanshan, bed 28, please call this number if there are any issues. Also, arrange the best nutritional meals, and I will cover the cost."

The nurse took the business card, glanced at it, nodded, and put it away.

The elevator doors closed.

The basement garage. Looking up, the U8 is still parked in the same spot I just haphazardly shoved in last night, crookedly, with one wheel on the line.

He opened the car door, got in, started the engine, and drove off the ramp.

There weren't many cars on the streets of Pudong in the early morning. The streetlights were still on, and the sky was tinged with a thin layer of grayish-blue.

Li Yichen rested one hand on the steering wheel, his mind no longer focused on Xue Shanshan.

The person Gu Shounian was talking about.

I'm going to see him in a few days.

"That level"—Gu Shounian didn't even dare to mention the name on the phone.

He rolled down the car window a crack, letting in a cool breeze that dispelled the smell of disinfectant that had lingered in the hospital all night.

I parked the car in the underground garage of Tomson Riviera, turned off the engine, and removed the key.

He leaned back in his seat and closed his eyes for five seconds.

Who cares who comes?

He was never afraid of meeting people. What he feared was having nothing in his hands.

Li Yichen opened his eyes and touched his wristwatch.

And the things in his hands were already overflowing.
