Chapter 211 The Underground Fortress, The Shock of the Strongest Soldier King
"Let's keep going." Li Yichen leaned back in his seat, crossing his legs. "Let him follow if he dares. I want to see who's got the guts."
Liu Guoliang turned and glanced at him, then picked up the car radio. "Ignore the following vehicles, speed up and proceed along the original planned route."
The convoy sped up. Five armed pickup trucks maintained a safe distance, while the two rear guard vehicles deliberately slowed down, blocking the suspicious vehicle three kilometers away. In less than two minutes, the other vehicle clearly realized it had been exposed and voluntarily withdrew from view.
Ling'er said into her watch, "I've noted down the license plate number. I'll check it for Brother Gu later."
Li Yichen hummed in agreement, but didn't say anything more.
At 10 p.m. sharp, the convoy entered the east gate of the Shanghai Military Region. They passed through five checkpoints, each requiring separate verification—facial recognition, fingerprints, iris scans, access keys, and the final checkpoint consisted of two half-meter-thick explosion-proof alloy doors, hydraulically driven, opening and closing with a sound similar to a submarine hatch closing.
The alloy door slammed shut behind them.
The convoy continued along a downward-sloping concrete tunnel, the gradient growing steeper, making their eardrums feel constricted. One hundred meters underground. Two hundred meters. Three hundred meters.
The headlights of the command vehicle swept across the end of the tunnel—and suddenly, the view opened up.
Li Yichen bent down and looked out through the windshield.
The underground space was the size of several football fields. The dome was over twenty meters high, with a row of industrial-grade searchlights illuminating the entire area in minute detail. The ground was made of special concrete, so that even tire tracks couldn't leave a mark. In the distance, ammunition elevators, armor repair cranes, and a whole row of folding control platforms were embedded in the walls.
"When was this place dug?" Li Yichen raised an eyebrow.
Liu Guoliang rolled over from the passenger seat, a hint of pride on his old face. "Construction started twenty years ago, and the earthwork alone took three and a half years. The whole system is nuclear-resistant, capable of withstanding a surface explosion of 500,000 tons."
Li Yichen nodded. It certainly had an impressive presence.
The cars came to a stop. The engines of all twelve vehicles shut off one after another. There was a two-second silence in the underground space, followed by a surge of footsteps—the backup personnel were running in from all directions.
Gu Shounian jumped out of the car, rubbing his hands together as he waved back. "Don't rush to move, come on, let's have a simple meal first."
The internal reception area was located on the flank of the base. It was supposed to be a simple meal, but there were about ten dishes on the table, along with two bottles of Moutai.
Liu Guoliang personally poured wine for Li Yichen, his hands trembling slightly. "President Li, all ten battle suits were delivered on time, not a single one missing. To be frank—"
He raised his glass, his voice deepening. "I'm convinced."
Gu Shounian raised his glass as well. Several staff officers beside him also stood up in unison.
Li Yichen clinked glasses with everyone, without any pretense. The liquor went down his throat, its spiciness warming his stomach.
The meal lasted forty minutes. During it, Liu Guoliang asked, "Could we build a few more armored vehicles? Money and materials aren't a problem!" Li Yichen nodded, "Commander Liu, that might take a while. I need to rush to produce a thousand hydrogen fuel cells that your military region needs!"
Liu Guoliang nodded upon hearing Li Yichen's words, then raised his glass and clinked it with Li Yichen's.
After the meal, everyone returned to the main base.
In the center of the field, ten black shockproof boxes had been unloaded from the heavy trucks and were lined up in a row. The boxes were over two meters tall, and the carbon fiber shells gleamed matte under the lights.
In front of the box, ten people stood in a straight line.
They were all dressed in identical black training uniforms, with golden blade insignia embroidered on their armbands. They were all over 1.8 meters tall, with broad shoulders and narrow waists; standing still, the outlines of their muscles could be seen through the fabric of their clothes.
Ten elite soldiers.
When they saw Li Yichen approaching, they all gave a crisp, uniform salute.
The leader, a man with a buzz cut and an old scar on his chin, boomed, "Report! The entire Heavenly Soldier Special Forces team is in position and awaiting instructions!"
Li Yichen nodded to them, and without saying a word, walked directly to the first box.
Press your palm on the fingerprint area on the side of the box.
Click. The latch pops open. The lid slides to the sides.
The deep black armor emerged from the white shock-absorbing foam, the cold light of the searchlight hitting the coating and being completely swallowed up—the thing didn't reflect any light, standing there like a solidified black hole.
The breathing of the ten elite soldiers simultaneously became heavier.
Li Yichen walked along the queue and opened each of the ten boxes one by one.
Then he stood in the center and raised his chin.
"Ling'er".
The watch was slightly shiny.
"Activate all".
A ghostly blue light simultaneously emanated from the gaps in the masks of all ten suits of armor. The low-frequency hum of the hydraulic systems converging from ten directions resonated throughout the underground space. The ground trembled slightly.
The soldier with the buzz cut bobbed his Adam's apple.
"I'll only demonstrate once more." Li Yichen patted the breastplate of the nearest suit of armor. "Watch closely."
He turned, took a step back from his armor. The armor plates split open along the center line, revealing his limbs and skeleton. He was completely embedded in them—click, click. From shoulder to shin, one piece after another was fastened securely.
The mask fell down. The HUD lit up.
He raised his right arm, clenched his fist, and then released it. He loosened his shoulders. The whole movement was as fluid as if he were simply putting on a jacket.
Then he walked out. The armor plates popped open, and he stepped out. It all happened in less than twenty seconds.
"Now, you go up."
The ten elite soldiers exchanged glances. The crew-cut soldier was the first to step forward.
He walked to the armor, took a deep breath, and turned back a step. The instant his back pressed against it, the neural electrodes connected to his skin—a burst of intense tingling sensation exploded from his spine, spreading throughout his limbs.
The nail plates are engaged. One piece. Two pieces. The whole body.
The man with the buzz cut looked down at his hands. His metal-clad fingers bent and straightened. The feeling of power filling his limbs made him let out a muffled groan.
"Hold……"
Nine elite soldiers beside him completed their uniforms one after another. One of them took two steps in place, the ground creaking under his feet. Another tried to raise his arm; the hydraulic joints responded smoothly and faster than expected, almost causing him to slap himself in the face.
Li Yichen stood at the front of the crowd, his hands in his pockets.
"Don't use brute force when you exert force. The hydraulic system will amplify your output; if you use three parts force, it will give you ten parts effect. Take a couple of steps first and feel it."
Ten armored vehicles began moving around the field. In the first two minutes, they stumbled and fell. One elite soldier stepped on something, fell forward, and his metal knee hit the ground, creating a dent.
But these men truly lived up to their reputation as those selected from tens of thousands of soldiers. Five minutes later, their pace became steady. Ten minutes later, they began to jog. Twenty minutes later, the crew-cut man was already able to perform a complete tactical roll.
Li Yichen checked the time and clapped his hands.
"Next, we will connect to the combat support system."
A female voice simultaneously rang out on the built-in communication channels of all ten battle suits. It wasn't the playful tone of Ling'er's—it was a pure, cold, mechanical broadcast.
"The Heavenly Soldier Combat Support System is now online. Confirm the connection for each of the following numbers: 01 to 10."
The man with the buzz cut paused, stunned. "What's this?"
"AI," Li Yichen said. "It will help you allocate hydraulic power, calibrate the strike angle, and assist in flight attitude. You are responsible for making decisions, and it is responsible for execution."
The man with the crew cut nodded thoughtfully. Then he walked to the testing area, where a special steel target, ten centimeters thick, stood in front of him.
He threw a punch.
AI intervenes the instant the punch is thrown. The hydraulic cylinder pushes at full power.
boom.
A fist-shaped crater was dented into the surface of the steel target, and the metal at the edges was squeezed outward, with debris flying two meters away.
The entire underground base was silent for three seconds.
Then the ten elite soldiers simultaneously let out a low growl.
"This is fucking—"
"Wow!"
"One more time! Let me try too!"
The scene instantly spiraled out of control. Ten mechs crowded into the testing area, vying to punch the steel target. Boom! Boom! After several consecutive punches, the entire steel target was twisted and deformed, finally breaking off from its base and bouncing twice on the ground.
Li Yichen took two steps back to avoid the flying metal fragments.
Next comes flight training.
Controlling a vector nozzle is ten times more complex than hand-to-hand combat. The first soldier to attempt hovering leaped straight to the dome, his head nearly slamming into a searchlight. The second didn't fly that high, but his attitude control failed; he spun three times in mid-air before finally landing hard on his backside, creating a spiderweb-like crack in the concrete.
"Relax the core! Don't fight the thrusters!" Li Yichen shouted from below.
The AI subsystem intervened simultaneously, beginning to calibrate the posture parameters of each individual in real time. Two hours later, the erratic hovering transformed into stable, stationary hovering. Four hours later, the ten mechs were able to perform basic directional changes at a height of twenty meters.
It didn't stop all night.
As dawn broke, ten deep black armored vehicles simultaneously activated their dorsal thrusters, hovering in mid-air above the underground base. Ten white and blue trails of flame intertwined, and waves of heat poured down, causing even the screws on the ground to tremble.
Liu Guoliang stood on the observation platform, his head tilted back, his neck almost breaking.
Ten steel behemoths were suspended in the dome lights, their eerie blue lights behind masks aligned in a uniform manner, and a low-frequency hum filled every inch of the space.
He turned his head sharply and stared at Li Yichen standing next to him.
"Brother."
Liu Guoliang's voice was deep and resonant, but the light in his eyes was unmistakable.
"Practice makes perfect."
He gestured with his chin toward the ten hovering armored vehicles.
"How about we have a real-world test?"
