Am I a Kamen Rider or the real young master who was switched at birth?
Chapter 16 Lin Yumin, Something's Wrong
When Ye Yang came down from the second floor, before he even reached the restaurant, he heard Lin Xingran's voice coming from the end of the corridor.
"...Let me tell you, based on my experience reading so many novels, there must be a very powerful figure behind him!" Lin Xingran said decisively, his tone as serious as if he were presenting the conclusion of an academic paper.
"Think about it, an ordinary person can suddenly conjure up a talking belt out of thin air and transform into an armored man. In novels, there is only one explanation for this: a master passing on his skills."
The restaurant was well-lit. The morning sunlight streamed in through the floor-to-ceiling windows, making the entire dining table bright and warm.
Breakfast was already laid out on the table. Although it wasn't as extravagant as the long tables laden with food in movies and TV dramas, it was still quite plentiful.
There was steaming hot white porridge, golden fried eggs, several plates of delicate side dishes, and a basket of cut fruit.
Lin Yuanshan sat at the head of the table, with a cup of tea and an open morning newspaper in front of him.
Su Wanqing sat next to him, putting food into Lin Ying's bowl.
Lin Ying sat next to her mother, her silvery-white hair appearing exceptionally soft in the morning light.
Lin Yumin was holding her phone and sitting opposite Lin Ying. Her head was down, so her expression was not visible.
Lin Xingran didn't sit down. She stood beside the dining table, one foot on the edge of her chair, the other gesturing in the air.
Her dark circles hadn't faded yet, and her hair was still a bit messy, but she was clearly much more energetic than when she was woken up in the morning.
"Think about it, it's like that kind of ancient master who's been trapped in a ring for hundreds of years, waiting for a destined person. Or maybe he lives in your head all the time, coming out to give you some pointers at crucial moments, or maybe it's a system! A system is the most likely one!"
Lin Xingran got more and more excited as he spoke, drawing a square in the air with his finger, "Binding a host, issuing tasks, and rewarding new cards upon completion—doesn't that match up with his so-called 'two thousandth skill'?"
Lin Ying thought about it seriously. Her fingers unconsciously touched the rim of the bowl, and her silver-white eyebrows furrowed slightly.
After thinking for several seconds, she looked up and asked in a very serious tone, "Second Sister—can we believe what's in novels?"
Lin Xingran turned around to look at Lin Ying, who put her hands on her hips and retorted confidently, "You're a girl, and you actually swapped babies with a boy? This kind of thing that only happens in novels actually happened to you, don't you think?"
The moment those words were spoken, the atmosphere at the dinner table subtly shifted.
Lin Ying lowered her head, her mouth moved, and she realized that she really couldn't refute this argument.
Lin Yuanshan paused as he picked up his teacup, the tea swirling gently inside. He put the teacup down and cleared his throat.
"That—it was an accident back then. The hospital was attacked by the Silent Beasts, and things were chaotic. When we rushed in, there was only Lin Ying's baby in the delivery room. All the nurses had evacuated, so we—"
He paused, seemingly choosing his words carefully, "—and then we carried her out. Only later did we realize it was another child."
"Then it's still a case of the wrong babies being given to the wrong families, isn't it?" Lin Xingran spread her hands and said in a serious tone.
Lin Yuanshan picked up his teacup, took a sip, and said nothing more.
Su Wanqing gently patted her husband's hand, a helpless yet amused smile appearing on her lips.
Lin Yumin did not participate in the discussion from beginning to end.
She sat at the outer edge of the dining table, her back ramrod straight. The tea in her cup had stopped steaming, but she didn't take a single sip.
She held the phone in one hand, her thumb gently swiping across the screen.
The light from the screen shone on her face, making her dark brown eyes glow slightly.
Her brows were gradually furrowing inwards.
The phone screen displays a chat interface. The nickname displayed at the top is half-obscured by the system avatar, and only the character "沈" is visible.
The chat history is quite long; scrolling up reveals a long list of green sent messages.
The latest message was from the other party, consisting of only one short line. Lin Yumin stared at that line for a long time, her thumb hovering above the screen.
Her lips were pressed into a thin line, and the knuckles of the fingers holding the teacup were slightly white.
Lin Xingran didn't notice her older sister's unusual behavior. She was engrossed in summarizing the theory that "Ye Yang must have a powerful backer" and was about to add a third point when she was interrupted by footsteps.
Ye Yang walked out from the corner of the stairs.
He changed into clean clothes, and the magenta camera hung around his neck, swaying gently as he walked.
As he walked, he brushed his hair aside with his hand. After entering the restaurant, he naturally pulled out the chair next to Lin Ying and sat down.
"What are you talking about?" Ye Yang picked up the chopsticks on the table and looked at everyone.
Lin Xingran turned around, placed her hands on the dining table, leaned forward, and said bluntly, "We were talking about the origin of that armor of yours. I wonder which big shot gave it to you?"
Her slightly upturned eyes gleamed with a knowing light.
Ye Yang picked up his chopsticks, took a piece of fried egg, chewed it a couple of times, and said in a flat tone, "I don't know either."
Lin Xingran curled her lip, pulled herself back, crossed her arms, and said in a tone that suggested she had expected this:
"You're such a cheapskate! Your master must have told you not to tell us. That's how it's always in novels. When a master passes on their skills, they always say, 'This matter must not be revealed,' and then the protagonist keeps his mouth shut, refusing to say anything no matter how much others ask."
Ye Yang put down his chopsticks and turned to look at Lin Xingran with a helpless expression.
He decided that he must write his novels more realistically in the future.
I can't write those melodramatic plots anymore, like the real and fake young masters, the ring grandpa, or system binding.
We absolutely cannot let them become popular. Otherwise, my second sister might really lose her mind one day.
He picked up his chopsticks again, his tone becoming more relaxed as he said:
"However—now that I've become a Kamen Rider, I should definitely do more to serve the people."
Lin Yuanshan put down the teacup and gently circled his finger around the rim.
He looked up at Ye Yang and asked in a steady voice, "So, Ye Yang, what are your plans after this?"
Ye Yang leaned back in his chair, crossed his arms, and thought seriously for a few seconds.
"Hmm—I really don't know. I just moved in, so I haven't thought that far ahead. Anyway, I'll keep taking pictures, keep learning skills, use the Silent Beasts when I have them, and help people when I don't. That's about it."
Lin Yuanshan nodded, then picked up his teacup, took a sip, and asked tentatively:
"How about going to your three older sisters' school? The Federation's top military academy. Military academies have specialized combat courses and silent beast extermination missions. Not only can you capture silent beasts, but you can also make a lot of new friends. Moreover, you can participate in some competitions, such as intra-school ranking competitions, national leagues, and even world championships."
Ye Yang's chopsticks stopped in mid-air. He thought for a moment, then frowned slightly.
He put down his chopsticks, rested his chin on his hand, and said, "That sounds interesting. But I guess I can kill the Silent Beasts without going to school, right? And as for participating in the competition, let's talk about that later."
Su Wanqing remained silent, but a gentle smile lingered on her lips.
She reached for the bowl on the table, ladled a bowl of porridge for Ye Yang, placed it in front of him, and said softly, "Okay, we'll talk about it later. Have breakfast first."
Ye Yang took the porridge, smelled it, and then scooped a spoonful into his mouth.
The porridge was at the perfect temperature, the rice cooked until soft and sticky but not mushy, and it contained a little lean meat and preserved egg. He chewed a couple of bites, and his eyes brightened slightly.
Watching his expression as he ate the porridge, Su Wanqing's smile deepened. "How is it? Does it suit your taste?"
"Not bad," Ye Yang said, then lowered his head and continued eating.
Just then, Lin Xingran finally noticed her older sister's unusual behavior.
Lin Yumin didn't touch her breakfast at all from beginning to end. The bowl of porridge in front of her had completely stopped steaming, and a thin layer of rice water had condensed around the rim of the bowl.
The tea in her hand had gone cold, with a few whitish tea leaves settled at the bottom of the cup.
Her phone screen was off, but she was still looking down at the black screen, her fingers unconsciously tracing the edge of the phone case.
Lin Xingran, her cheeks bulging and half a steamed bun still in her mouth, mumbled, "Big sister, why aren't you eating?"
She glanced at the untouched bowl of porridge in front of Lin Yumin, then at her older sister's expressionless face, before reaching out with lightning speed to grab the plate in front of Lin Yumin. "Don't you have an appetite? I'll eat it for you—"
Before her hand even touched the edge of the plate, Su Wanqing stopped her, saying, "Xingran, stop fooling around."
Lin Xingran's hand froze in mid-air, her fingers twitching in the air before she sheepishly withdrew them.
But her eyes remained fixed on her older sister, waiting for her to interact with her as usual.
When Lin Xingran tries to snatch her things, Lin Yumin usually glances at her calmly with her dark brown eyes, then precisely pushes her hand away, sometimes adding a short comment like "stupid" or "it's asking for trouble."
This is just an ordinary interaction between the sisters.
But this time, Lin Yumin didn't say anything.
She turned her phone upside down and placed it face down on the dining table, then stood up as gracefully and calmly as ever.
She pushed the chair under the table, gently brushed the stray hairs from her forehead with her fingers, and then said in a very soft voice, "I'm not hungry, so I won't eat."
After saying that, she took her phone and turned to walk towards the stairs. But Ye Yang noticed that as she turned, her fingers clenched tightly at the hem of her shirt.
Su Wanqing watched her eldest daughter's figure disappear around the corner of the stairs, her brows furrowing slightly.
She put down her chopsticks and shifted her gaze from the stairwell back to the dining table.
"What's wrong with this child?" Su Wanqing asked softly.
Lin Xingran's hand was still suspended in mid-air, and the xiaolongbao she was holding with her chopsticks almost fell back onto the plate.
