Everyone's on a time-travel adventure! I'm raising city beasts in a post-apocalyptic world
Chapter 49, The Third Beast Tamer
The old man glanced at the dog in Lin Feng's hand, then reached out and gently stroked its back, from head to tail, his eyes filled with reluctance.
"I'll trade it. As long as you don't eat it, I'll trade it. Its name is Xiao Hei. My wife bought it for me to keep her company when she was alive. I never thought the world would turn out like this..."
Mo Qingluan frowned. With so many people in the convoy, this little bit of food wouldn't even be enough to fill their stomachs. He said, "This isn't the rule!"
"It's just a transaction, it's consensual, what's wrong with it? Don't forget this is our team, we have to follow our rules. The old-fashioned 'iron rice bowl' mentality doesn't work here."
Lin Feng's gaze swept over the people around him, and the corners of his mouth curled up slightly.
"Even if she..." Lin Feng pointed to a tall figure, a woman in her twenties.
"Hey, that beautiful lady," Lin Feng waved to her.
The woman paused, looked around, and made sure Lin Feng was calling her. "It's you, come here."
The woman hesitated for a moment before squeezing through the crowd. Upon closer inspection, Lin Feng noticed that she indeed had a great figure—tall and slender, with curves in all the right places, delicate features, and a high nose bridge. One could immediately tell she was a former model, and a high-flying model who had walked in international fashion shows.
"What's your name?"
"Su Wan." The woman's voice was a little hoarse, and her lips were chapped, as if she hadn't had a proper meal in a long time.
"Su Wan, a good name," Lin Feng looked her up and down, nodding to himself. "How about you come with me? I'll make sure you're well-fed every day."
The people around immediately erupted in a commotion, and a murmur of whispers filled the air.
Su Wan blushed slightly, but she didn't lower her head or avoid Lin Feng's gaze. She hadn't eaten all day, and her stomach felt empty, as if something was gnawing at her. She used to be a model, and her company had secured her a role.
To maintain her figure, she had gone hungry countless times, but never like this, so hungry she wanted to chew on the table. After a moment of silence, she finally spoke: "What you said is true."
"I'm not kidding! That big tortoise in the convoy is my mount."
"Don't agree to his request!"
Michelle squeezed in from outside and grabbed Su Wan's hand.
"Su Wan, don't agree to this scumbag's request!"
Michelle glared at Lin Feng, her eyes filled with anger, wariness, and a hint of regret that she should not have let him come along.
Lin Feng shrugged, picked up the black dog, and helped the old man walk away.
"This is boring, I'm leaving."
Lin Feng took a few steps and then suddenly stopped.
"My words have always held true: follow me and I'll have food to eat, of course... only beautiful women."
Without waiting for anyone's reply, he picked up the dog and left.
The black dog, held in Lin Feng's arms, opened its pair of deep brown, clear, round eyes and looked at Lin Feng. Then it stuck out its tongue and licked the back of Lin Feng's hand.
"Hehe, little guy..."
Lin Feng rubbed Xiao Hei's head and led the old man to Xiao Xuan's side. Xiao Xuan lay on the edge of the forest and dug a large hole with its claws.
As soon as it stopped, it kept digging and gnawing at the soil. Lin Feng shook his head and let it be.
"Sister Min."
Chen Min put down the mineral water bottle, looked at Lin Feng, then at the old man behind him, and finally fixed her gaze on the black dog in his arms.
"Is this the dog?" Chen Min reached out and touched the dog's head; the black dog's tail wagged gently.
"Grandma, go with her." Lin Feng pointed to Chen Min and said to the old woman, "She'll arrange a seat for you. I'll bring the rice over in a bit, ten pounds, you won't be shortchanged."
The old man nodded without saying anything.
"Let me play with the dog for a while." Chen Min took the black dog from Lin Feng and led the old man toward her bus.
Chen Min returned to the bus, found a sausage, peeled it, broke it into small pieces, and fed it to the black dog. The black dog sniffed it and started eating, wolfing it down; it was clearly starving.
"Hey you guys, have you packed my things properly?"
"Sister Min, keep it safe."
Several women got out of the car. They were all young, in their early twenties, wearing T-shirts and jeans, with no makeup, but they were all quite good-looking and could be considered attractive in a crowd.
They were carrying bags and sacks, unloading them from the car.
"Is this all you have?"
Lin Feng arrived at the bus at some point and saw that Chen Min, a core member and awakened being, only had this much.
The food consisted of only a small bag, containing some instant noodles, bread, rice, and the like, weighing less than ten pounds in total. There was even a small half-bag of wild vegetables, and the best thing was half a fish, which looked like the same one that had been distributed that morning. This was incredibly meager.
"That's all." Chen Min fed the last piece of ham sausage to the black dog.
"I didn't have much stuff to begin with, and the convoy was short of supplies, so I didn't even want most of it."
Lin Feng handed the old man a bag of rice and also gave him a bag of wild vegetables.
"Here, these are your things. You'll be riding in this car from now on. This bag of wild vegetables is for you too."
"Thank you, thank you..." The old man was in tears, thanking them repeatedly.
Lin Feng waved his hand and went over to put his arm around Chen Min.
"Sister Min, if you come with me, why would you still eat wild vegetables? I guarantee I'll fatten you up and make you plump and healthy."
"You're the one who's all white and chubby." Chen Min playfully patted Lin Feng's chest, but in the apocalypse, such a sentence was no less than the best love confession.
In the apocalypse, love is a luxury, and life is precarious, with the possibility of death at any moment. Many women in the convoy who have lost their husbands will soon find new men by their side, not only for food and survival resources, but perhaps also for emotional support.
Unless it's forced, they generally turn a blind eye. This is one of the ways goods circulate at the grassroots level, since everyone is just trying to survive.
"Let's go..."
The return trip was quick, and Lin Feng pointed to the house on Xiao Xuan's back.
"Move them upstairs. Put the clothes upstairs, and the food and water in the storage room downstairs."
The women behind Chen Min responded and carried their things up the stairs. They stood at the door of the storage room, their eyes scanning the shelves piled high with supplies. Their eyes were filled with shock. The things in this room were enough for them to eat for several months.
No wonder Sister Min insisted on moving over even without taking the bus; they would have followed too. However, they knew this was not something they could hope for. They sensibly put their things down, said nothing, turned around and went downstairs, turning back every few steps.
"Brother Lin Feng, Sister Min, come and eat."
"They're here."
Lin Feng reached out and took the black dog from Chen Min's arms, patting its head.
"Let's go eat."
