Chapter 201 Have you ever encountered a case where you know who the murderer is, but you can't
Saku Norifumi sat in the passenger seat, his seatbelt fastened. He appeared calm and collected on the surface, but his mind was racing, calculating the possible directions of the conversation that might follow.
He considered many possibilities, such as Lin Shen directly telling him, "Don't get close to Eri anymore."
They might subtly flaunt their wealth to put him down, or even use a condescending attitude to pressure him into backing down.
No matter what move the other party makes, he has already figured out how to respond.
Saku Hoji had even prepared a draft in his mind, first politely expressing his respect and appreciation for Attorney Eri Kisaki, and then pointing out in a humble yet assertive manner that relationships are a matter between two people and that a third party has no right to interfere.
Perfect, appropriate, impeccable.
The other party is just a coffee shop owner. Even if his family is rich, he's at most a rich second-generation with some spare cash.
Saku Hoshi is a legitimate criminal lawyer. The reputation and connections he has built up over the years are far beyond what a young man who runs a coffee shop can compare to.
Thinking of this, he felt much more at ease.
Just as he had meticulously prepared all possible solutions in his mind, Lin Shen spoke:
"Attorney Saku, you just said you specialize in criminal cases?"
Saku Hoji snapped out of his reverie, slightly adjusted his posture, and said with professional composure, "Yes. I've been practicing for over ten years and am quite well-known in the criminal defense field."
He deliberately slowed down his speech when he said "somewhat famous," so as not to boast excessively but to convey his weight appropriately.
Lin Shen nodded, his gaze still fixed on the road ahead, his tone remaining calm:
"In all your years of handling criminal cases, have you ever encountered a case where... you know who the murderer is, but you just can't convict them?"
Saku Hoshi was taken aback.
He originally thought Lin Shen would directly bring up the topic of relationships, but he didn't expect the other party to ask about work.
He paused for a moment, then sighed softly, his voice carrying a hint of professional helplessness: "Of course. The law isn't omnipotent; it only considers evidence."
Saku Norifumi turned to look out the window, the shadows of the streetlights flashing across his face:
"I've taken on several murder cases, and because of a lack of crucial evidence, I could only watch helplessly as the killer swaggered out of the courthouse through the main entrance."
He paused, then added, his voice slightly deeper, "One of them is a serial killer, the notorious kind."
"Everyone knows he killed the man, but his family background is too powerful."
As he said this, a hint of gritted teeth unconsciously crept into his voice: "The eyewitness was bribed, and the judge was also contacted. In the end, they were acquitted."
He was silent for a few seconds, then added in a low voice, "This kind of scum is still smiling when he walks out of the courtroom."
The carriage was quiet for a moment.
Then Lin Shen asked in a very casual tone, "Oh? Do you know where I can find that person?"
Upon hearing this question, Saku Norifumi turned around abruptly, his eyes filled with wariness and doubt, and his tone became cautious: "Why are you asking this?"
Lin Shen wore an innocent smile: "I want to go talk to him and persuade him to turn himself in."
Saku Hoji stared blankly at Lin Shen for several seconds, then couldn't help but laugh, but the laugh was full of disbelief: "President Lin, are you kidding me?"
Lin Shen turned his head and glanced at him, smiled, and said nothing.
But there was something about that smile that Saku Norifumi couldn't quite put his finger on—it was like certainty, or perhaps a kind of nonchalant confidence.
He felt a little uneasy at that smile, but he quickly rallied himself: What's there to be afraid of? He wanted to see what this young man who ran a coffee shop was really capable of.
Norifumi Saku took out his phone and opened Twitter.
"That guy's name is Sasaki Takuya." He said as he typed the name into the search box and clicked on the other person's Twitter page:
"He has a habit of updating his whereabouts on social media accounts in real time, as if he's afraid others won't know where he's living a life of debauchery."
He scrolled down twice and stopped his finger on a location information. "Sent just ten minutes ago. He's at MILK Flower Bar."
Lin Shen turned the steering wheel, and the black sedan smoothly made a U-turn in the night, heading towards the MILK Flower Bar.
Saku Norifumi sat in the passenger seat, holding his phone, feeling a little uneasy.
He wasn't quite sure what Lin Shen was going to do, but he also had a faint sense of anticipation in his heart.
After driving for about ten minutes, the car stopped on the street opposite MILK Flower Bar.
At the dimly lit entrance of a bar, a man in a flashy shirt with slicked-back hair stood on the roadside with his arm around two young girls, laughing loudly and talking to them, making the two girls giggle.
Saku Hoji recognized the figure at a glance. His fingers unconsciously tightened around his phone, and his voice carried a suppressed chill: "It's him, Sasaki Takuya."
He turned his head and added in a hateful tone, "His father has a good relationship with several members of parliament and reportedly provides hundreds of millions of dollars in political donations to the party every year, so he can do whatever he wants here and nobody dares to touch him."
He had barely finished speaking when he caught a glimpse of Lin Shen's actions out of the corner of his eye. The rest of his sentence seemed to be stuck in his throat, and he couldn't say it anymore.
He saw Lin Shen pull out a sniper rifle from behind his seat at some point.
The long gun barrel reflected a cold, matte light in the dim light inside the car.
Lin Shen's movements were very smooth. He rolled down the passenger window and then steadily placed the muzzle of the gun on the passenger window frame.
Saku Hoji's mind went completely blank for a moment, as if it had been paused.
His mouth was slightly open, as if he wanted to say something, but he couldn't utter a single word.
He even wondered if he was dreaming. A coffee shop owner who had been talking to him about criminal cases and law just minutes before was now holding a sniper rifle, propped against his car window, aiming at the man at the entrance of the bar across the street.
Then he heard Lin Shen's voice, his tone still calm to the point of being casual: "My eyesight isn't good, let me double-check, is it him?"
Before Saku Norifumi's brain could process what was happening, his mouth instinctively uttered a dry, hoarse sound: "...It's him."
Lin Shen nodded.
Then he pulled the trigger.
A muffled thud.
Very good, a very crisp sound.
At the bar entrance in the distance, Sasaki Takuya's head seemed to be slapped by an invisible hand, and he instantly tilted to the side, completely bewildered.
The blood blossoms exploded into a dark red mist under the neon lights.
The two girls he was holding were stunned for a moment, then simultaneously let out a sharp scream, their legs buckled and they collapsed to the ground.
Other patrons outside the bar screamed and scattered.
The sounds of shattering glasses, overturned tables and chairs, and screams and cries mingled together in the night air, creating a chaotic mess.
Lin Shen calmly put the sniper rifle back and casually placed it on the back seat.
He even reached out and rolled up the passenger window again, shutting out the noisy screams from outside.
Then he turned to look at Saku Norifumi, who was completely petrified in the passenger seat, a relaxed smile on his face, and said, "How's it going? Did you get over that anger?"
Saku Norifumi remained frozen in the passenger seat, his pupils still trembling slightly.
He stared blankly at Lin Shen for several seconds before mechanically nodding, his voice dry and hoarse like sandpaper rubbing against a wooden board: "...It's...it's out."
He swallowed and found his throat was extremely dry.
He looked down at his hands; his fingers were trembling slightly, uncontrollably.
He has faced murderers, prosecutors, and difficult judges in countless courtrooms, and he has never been afraid.
But at this moment, he was sitting in a car where he had just killed someone, and next to him sat a man who had just blown someone's head off with a sniper rifle.
The man was starting the car with a relaxed expression, shifting gears, and pressing the accelerator, as if he had just done something insignificant.
