Chapter 26 The Shocked Inspector Gure 3
When Inspector Megure arrived at the scene, a crowd of onlookers had already gathered in the parking lot.
He led a few officers through the crowd and immediately spotted the still-burning wreckage of the Kuruma.
The firelight cast a crimson glow on the surrounding cement walls, and the air was filled with the acrid smell of burning and plastic.
Broken glass and twisted metal fragments were scattered on the ground, and the entire car was completely wrecked!
Before he could even marvel at how spectacular the scene was, he saw Kogoro Mouri running towards him with money in his arms.
"Inspector Megure! You've finally arrived!" Kogoro Mouri ran out of breath as if he had seen a savior, clutching the wad of banknotes tightly in his arms.
Inspector Megure stared at him, then paused, his gaze falling on the stack of money: "Brother Mori... what's this money for?"
"That's exactly what I was going to tell you!" Kogoro Mouri took a deep breath and then poured out his story from beginning to end.
How did Conan deduce that the kidnappers were at Yotsubashi Middle School? How did they rush in to arrest them? How were they subdued by a helmeted kidnapper with a gun? How were they forced to make a phone call to blackmail President Tani and Miss Suzuki? How were they chased by security guards while driving a Kuruma? How did they see the kidnapper pull out a Gatling gun and wipe out the pursuers while in the car?
He spoke at breakneck speed, spitting everywhere, gesturing wildly, and when he got to the Gatling gun part, he even added his own "beep beep beep beep beep" sound effect.
After hearing this, Inspector Megure stood there in silence for a long time, his face showing an expression that said, "Are you kidding me?"
He took off his hat, scratched his head, then put it back on, and couldn't help but say, "Brother Mori... are you drunk tonight, talking nonsense?"
Kogoro Mouri nearly jumped up: "I'm telling the truth! Inspector!"
"Look at this money, this is what the kidnapper threw at me! And look at that exploded car!"
"Oh, right, you can call the traffic police! There were reports of speeding and shootings on several streets just now; you can check and find out!"
"And Sonoko, she paid the 300 million yen ransom for us! Just give her a call and you'll know!"
Looking at Kogoro Mouri's flushed face, Inspector Megure knew Kogoro Mouri all too well, even though the story sounded absurd.
This old guy may love to brag, but he couldn't come up with such an outrageous story.
He took out his phone with some skepticism and made a call to an acquaintance in the traffic police department. After asking the question, his brows furrowed even more.
Traffic police have confirmed that multiple streets received reports of speeding and shootings tonight.
Moreover, more than one witness reported seeing a black sedan speeding wildly down the street, followed by several other black vehicles. Some people also heard very intense gunfire, with one describing it as "like a high-speed car chase in a Hollywood movie."
After hanging up the phone, Inspector Megure remained silent for a while before his gaze towards Kogoro Mouri finally changed from "You're bragging" to "This is actually true."
Just then, a black van slowly drove up and stopped on the side of the road.
As soon as the car door opened, Ran jumped out first. She immediately saw Kogoro Mouri and practically pounced on him: "Dad! Are you alright? Are you hurt?"
"It's nothing, it's nothing!" Kogoro Mouri puffed out his chest, trying his best to maintain the image of a "reliable dad" in front of his daughter: "What kind of storms hasn't your dad weathered? This is nothing."
Conan jumped out of the car behind him and immediately noticed the stack of banknotes in Kogoro Mouri's arms. Curious, he leaned over and asked, "Uncle Mouri, what's this money for?"
"Oh, this?" Kogoro Mori glanced down at the stack of money, then quickly stuffed it into Inspector Megure's hand. "The kidnapper gave it to me!"
"What do you mean by 'service fee'? I don't want it! If I take it, wouldn't I become his accomplice?"
"Inspector, this money is yours to handle!"
Inspector Megure took the stack of money, and his eyes showed a hint of respect as he looked at Kogoro Mouri.
Although Mori is usually not very reliable, he is quite conscientious when it matters.
He exclaimed exaggeratedly, "Brother Mori, your character is truly noble!"
A little embarrassed by the compliment, Kogoro Mouri scratched his head and tentatively asked, "Well... can we go now?"
Inspector Megure glanced at the still-burning wreckage of the car, then at the stack of money in his arms, and pondered for a moment.
According to the rules, Kogoro Mouri, as the person involved, should be taken back for a detailed statement.
But he had known Kogoro Mouri for so many years and knew that the other man was not a criminal. Moreover, the other man had just escaped a kidnapping and his daughter was watching him expectantly.
In the end, Inspector Megure waved his hand and said, "Alright, I've already recorded your statement. We'll contact you again if we need to conduct further investigations."
Kogoro Mouri felt like he'd been granted a pardon and quickly pulled Ran and Conan back.
Conan, however, was somewhat reluctant. He turned his head and kept his eyes fixed on the still-smoking wreckage of the Kuruma.
His mind was full of questions.
Where did that kidnapper come from? Why does he have a weapon like a Gatling gun? Where has he gone now?
Could there be any clues left in that exploded car?
He wanted to stay and examine the scene carefully.
Then he got a powerful punch to the head!
Kogoro Mouri grabbed Conan by the back of his collar, lifted him up, and shoved him into the van, all the while cursing, "You brat, you almost got me killed, and you still dare to look around!"
"Ouch, ouch, ouch..." Conan rubbed the bump on his head as he was shoved into the back seat.
The van slowly drove away from the scene, the warm lights inside contrasting sharply with the sirens outside.
Kogoro Mori leaned back in his chair, let out a long breath, and felt as if he had finally come back to life.
He turned to Sonoko, who was sitting opposite him, clasped his hands together, and sincerely thanked her: "Miss Sonoko, thank you so much for tonight!"
"If you hadn't brought the money in time, I might have lost my life!"
Sonoko waved her hand dismissively: "Oh, Uncle Mori, don't be so polite! Ran's business is my business, it's nothing!"
Ran sat beside her, hesitated for a moment, and then said, "Sonoko...we will definitely pay you back those 300 million yen."
Sonoko was about to blurt out, "You don't need to pay it back," but then she thought that given Ran's personality, directly telling him she didn't want the money might make him feel even worse.
Moreover, 300 million is indeed a large sum of money. If she refuses too readily, it will only put a burden on Xiaolan's mind.
So she changed her mind: "Okay, then you can pay me back slowly when you have the money."
