Chapter 71 Breaking Through the Safe House
Inside the safe house, Hideo Kawashima paced back and forth anxiously.
He walked barefoot on the metal floor, making dull thuds, and beads of sweat rolled down his forehead.
He stopped, looked at his bodyguard, and asked in a low voice, "This safe house... is it really safe?"
The bodyguard, who had been listening intently to the sounds outside, turned around upon hearing this, his face displaying a confident and certain expression. His tone was remarkably certain: "Boss, don't worry, it's absolutely safe."
"This door and the surrounding walls are all made of titanium alloy, with a strength comparable to that of a bank vault."
"Forget about his little pistol, even if he came with rockets or bombarded us with C4, it wouldn't do any good!"
"We're absolutely safe inside!!"
Upon hearing this, Hideo Kawashima finally felt a sense of relief.
He let out a long sigh of relief, wiped the sweat from his forehead with his sleeve, and leaned against the wall to catch his breath for a while.
But after a short while, he frowned again and asked, "And then what? We can't stay in there forever, can we?"
The bodyguard had clearly considered this issue beforehand, and calmly replied, "Boss, don't worry."
"After dawn, the same few brothers who come to pick up the goods at the same time every day will come to the villa."
"They'll see what's happening outside and come in to check."
"Then we can go out from inside, and we'll be safe."
Only then did Hideo Kawashima truly feel at ease.
He nodded, found a slightly drier corner on the ground to sit down, and prepared to get through this damn night.
However, before he could even sit down properly, he heard a faint, continuous buzzing sound coming from outside.
The sound wasn't loud, but it was exceptionally clear in the small, enclosed space, like an electric mosquito swatter working incessantly in the distance.
Hideo Kawashima pricked up his ears and asked somewhat uneasily, "What was that sound?"
The bodyguard heard it too.
He walked to the door, pressed his ear against the cold metal door for a few seconds, then stepped back, a disdainful expression on his face, and waved his hand, saying, "Boss, ignore it."
"No matter what tricks he plays outside, he will never be able to break in."
Hideo Kawashima thought about it and realized that made sense. He felt relieved again, closed his eyes, and began to doze off.
But not long after, he suddenly sensed something was wrong.
His nose started to itch, as if something was scratching inside his nasal cavity.
He couldn't help but sniff, and then—cough.
A soft sound.
Then came a few more coughs.
He covered his mouth, trying to hold it in, but the pungent smell grew stronger and stronger, spicy and acrid, as if someone had burned a piece of plastic in front of him.
He couldn't hold it in any longer, bent over and coughed violently, coughing until tears streamed down his face, which turned a deep purplish-red.
Hideo Kawashima coughed and asked with difficulty, "What...what's going on?! Why is it so choking?!"
The bodyguard also started coughing.
He initially tried to hold his breath, but he couldn't hold it for more than twenty seconds before he broke down, coughing and spitting as he bent over.
A hint of barely concealed panic finally appeared on his face: "I...I don't know! This can't be!!"
Then they both saw at the same time that wisps of white smoke were slowly seeping into the control panel where the password was entered.
The smoke, as if alive, spread down the walls, silently filling every corner of the small, enclosed space.
Hideo Kawashima's pupils dilated suddenly, and he finally panicked: "Didn't you fucking say it was absolutely safe?! Why did the smoke get in?!"
The bodyguard was also stunned. He coughed and looked around frantically, trying to cover the wound with his hands, but to no avail!
------
Outside the safe house, Lin Shen was squatting in front of the silver-gray metal door, holding a buzzing chainsaw in his hand.
His target was certainly not that titanium alloy door. He wasn't stupid; it would be a waste of time to saw through something that even C4 couldn't break.
His target was the password input panel next to the door frame.
Lin Shen used a high-speed chainsaw to cut along the edge of the panel. The metal saw blade rubbed against the stainless steel panel, producing a piercing whistling sound and sparks flying everywhere.
A few seconds later, he pried the high-tech-looking keypad off the wall, revealing several colored wires and a wiring interface behind it.
Lin Shen put the chainsaw aside, squatted down, and took a closer look at the wiring.
Then he laughed.
The more sophisticated or high-end something looks, the more obvious its design flaws tend to be.
Safe houses may seem impenetrable on the surface, but they are not.
Humans need to breathe to live.
This means that even the most airtight safe house cannot be completely isolated from the outside world; ventilation ducts are necessary for air exchange.
Combination locks, on the other hand, require an external power supply and control cable to operate.
This is the flaw.
Lin Shen really couldn't understand what was going on in Kawashima Hideo's head.
If you're willing to spend a lot of money to build a titanium alloy safe house, why use an electronic combination lock that requires external power?
Why not just install a simple physical combination lock?
He guessed that the old guy had probably watched too many hacker movies and thought that the combination lock that could be opened with a press was particularly cool, and had been fooled by the unscrupulous merchant.
Lin Shen stopped thinking about it.
He pulled the disassembled control panel aside and yanked out a small section of the control wires along with their outer casing.
Then he pulled a smoke grenade from his waist, removed the safety pin, aimed it at the gap in the wire entrance, and inserted it directly.
Thick white smoke began to seep into the safe house little by little through the gaps in the pipes.
After using up one smoke grenade, he pulled out a second one.
Then came the third one.
Like a very patient barbecue chef, he slowly and deliberately stuffed smoke bombs into that small cable tunnel.
When he was inserting the fourth one, he heard faint coughing coming from inside the door.
He chuckled and continued stuffing in the smoke grenades until the seventh one was finished, then he stopped and waited a while.
At first there was no movement, and Lin Shen thought: Could it be that he still prepared a gas mask inside?
Just as he was considering whether to try another method, the seemingly indestructible titanium alloy security door finally emitted a slight mechanical unlocking sound.
With a click, it was pushed aside by someone inside.
Several figures stumbled out of the door, coughing violently.
Smoke billowed out of the open door like a flood, filling the corridor.
Lin Shen reacted swiftly, firing two shots in quick succession. Before the two bodyguards could even recover from their coughing fits, they were struck by bullet holes in their heads and collapsed to the ground without a sound.
The last one to appear was Hideo Kawashima.
He was coughing so hard he was almost out of breath, bent over and leaning against the door frame, his face both red and white, tears and snot streaming down his face.
He had just raised his head to take a breath of fresh air when a hand grabbed the back of his collar and dragged him against the wall of the corridor like a chick.
Lin Shen slammed him against the wall, one hand gripping his neck, the other pressing the barrel of a gun against his chin, and laughed, "So you're finally willing to part with it? Tell me, where's your vault?"
