Chapter 86: The SAT troops have appeared! Charge out!
When Lin Shen walked out of the hotel, the sunlight was already quite dazzling.
The sea breeze carried a faint salty taste.
He had only intended to take a casual stroll and observe the situation on the island today.
But he realized something was wrong after walking for less than ten minutes.
There was something clearly wrong with the number of police officers in the town.
They weren't ordinary police officers patrolling in groups of two or three, but rather squads of armed police, dressed in black combat uniforms, with pistols at their waists, spare magazines strapped to their thighs, and some even carrying submachine guns.
Groups of three or four patrolled back and forth along the town’s main road, their eyes alert and their movements efficient, a stark contrast to the lazy locals of yesterday.
Lin Shen stood in the shade of a banyan tree by the roadside and observed for a while without making a sound.
He recognized the logo on the arm patch of one of the groups—SAT.
Japan's special assault force.
This is a specialized unit dedicated to dealing with terrorists and major armed crimes; theoretically, it shouldn't be involved in a case of the magnitude of Moon Shadow Island.
But now they've not only appeared, but more than one team has appeared.
Lin Shen leaned against the tree trunk, his gaze following the SAT team members who were going door-to-door questioning residents, his mind racing.
He quickly came to two possible conclusions.
First, there were the heavy weapons he used at Black Rock House last night: light machine guns, grenades, and that RPG.
The shell casings and explosion marks left at the scene clearly exceeded the scope of an ordinary gang shootout. This level of firepower appearing in Japan was enough to prompt the Metropolitan Police Department's top brass to hold an emergency meeting overnight and call in the SAT.
Secondly, and this is another reason why he felt it was more likely.
That batch of drugs that he burned!
Kuroiwa Tatsuji has been able to traffic drugs on Tsukikage Island for so many years without being caught. If you say he doesn't have a protector, I would never believe it!
It's something even the townspeople know, so it's impossible for the police not to know.
Now that the goods have been burned, the chain of interests behind it has been broken, and the losses for some people are probably in the hundreds of millions.
Those people got anxious.
When they get anxious, they will use their connections to put pressure on the police.
That's why the SAT comes so quickly and so intensely.
Lin Shen watched as the SAT team members went into a house, came out a few minutes later, and went to the next house.
They didn't just stand at the door asking questions; they went straight in and searched the premises.
They didn't miss a single household.
His brow furrowed.
His room was filled with stolen cash and gold bars.
If the SAT continues their investigation at this pace and finds the hotel and his room door, he will have no way of explaining the source of the money to anyone.
Lin Shen turned around without making a sound and walked along the edge of the street towards the dock.
The scene at the dock set off alarm bells in his mind once again.
The entrance and exit of the pier have been cordoned off. Four SAT officers with guns stand on both sides of the entrance, while two uniformed police officers in the middle are checking tourists who are preparing to leave the island one by one.
Everyone's suitcase had to be opened, every piece of luggage had to be searched, and even the shoulder bag they carried had to be taken out for inspection.
A young man who looked like a tourist was immediately pinned against the wall and searched by two SAT team members because a diving knife was found in his suitcase.
The atmosphere was anything but polite.
Lin Shen watched from a distance for about two minutes, then turned around and returned to the hotel along the same route.
As he entered the hotel lobby, his gaze swept over the front desk.
There were also two SAT team members standing there, and a policeman in a suit was talking to the hotel manager, who looked very nervous and kept nodding.
Lin Shen walked past them without changing his expression, pressed the elevator button, waited for the elevator doors to open, went inside, and pressed the button for his floor.
As the elevator doors slowly closed, he watched the floor numbers jump one by one, knowing that he didn't have many options left.
Either give up that money, or... fight your way out!
----------
Megure Juzo yawned and walked out of the elevator with Sato Miwako.
He led his team to Moonshadow Island around 3 a.m. last night to begin the investigation.
I initially thought it was just a simple murder case, but upon closer inspection...
Good heavens!!
The three murder scenes combined resulted in the deaths of over a hundred people!
Not only did so many people die, but a large number of firearms were also left at the scene!
Megure Juzo shuddered, immediately losing all sleepiness and becoming fully alert, quickly beginning his investigation.
This investigation continued until the morning.
I drank three or four cups of coffee in a row!
Inspector Megure rubbed his still sore eyes, glanced at the SAT members in black combat uniforms standing at the hotel lobby reception desk with serious expressions, and couldn't help but mutter to himself, "Even the SAT has been mobilized... This is really going to be a big deal."
Miwako Sato, following behind him, nodded upon hearing this, her tone serious: "Yes. I heard they even found the wreckage of an RPG launcher at the scene... If something like that has been found, the higher-ups can't possibly ignore it."
Inspector Megure did not respond after hearing this.
He knew very well that while guns and ammunition were indeed important matters, what truly made those in power make the decision to mobilize the SAT overnight was definitely not those few light machine guns and an RPG launcher.
What really made some people uneasy was the batch of drugs that were burned in the fire!
It's impossible to say that the higher-ups didn't help in bringing in so much stock.
But he didn't say those words out loud.
Sato Miwako is still young, energetic, and upright. Knowing some things too early is not a good thing.
He preferred that she think it was just a routine armed crime response operation.
Inspector Megure walked over to the front desk and greeted the middle-aged military officer who looked like the person in charge of the SAT site:
"Hello, I'm Megure from the First Investigation Division of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. Is this area under your jurisdiction?"
The SAT supervisor nodded, his expression serious and his tone efficient: "Yes, Inspector Megure. Starting from 4:00 AM today, our department will take full control of access to and search operations on Tsukikage Island."
Without much small talk, Inspector Megure turned to Sato Miwako and beckoned her to hand over the stack of documents he was holding: "These are our on-site investigation records and some eyewitness accounts, compiled from last night to this morning. You can refer to them."
The SAT representative took the materials, quickly flipped through a couple of pages, and nodded: "Thank you for your hard work. Leave the rest to us."
Seeing this, Inspector Megure didn't linger any longer. He turned around, said "Let's go" to Miwako Sato, and walked towards the hotel entrance.
After all, this case is not under the jurisdiction of the First Investigation Division, and the nature of the matter is unusual, so it's best to leave as soon as possible.
Miwako Sato followed behind him, and just as the two reached the central area of the hotel lobby, the elevator suddenly dinged.
The elevator doors slowly opened, and a person stepped out.
Sato Miwako subconsciously glanced back.
The man's attire immediately struck her as odd.
The other person was wearing a black baseball cap with the brim pulled low, and a black face mask that almost completely covered their face, leaving only their eyes visible.
He was wearing a loose black windbreaker and carrying a bulging backpack on his back, which looked quite heavy.
In this atmosphere where SAT members are everywhere, this outfit is just too conspicuous.
Sato Miwako's steps unconsciously slowed. She lowered her voice and said to Inspector Megure beside her, "Inspector, that person is strange. Something's wrong."
Megure followed her gaze and glanced at the person. The experienced detective immediately noticed something was amiss.
But instead of stopping, he quickened his pace, urging in a low voice, "Don't meddle, let's go!!"
Sato Miwako paused for a moment. She was about to say something when she saw that two SAT team members standing on the left side of the lobby had already noticed the man who came out of the elevator.
One of them raised his hand to signal, and the two of them moved towards the man from either side. One of them said in a standard commanding tone:
"Hello, please cooperate with the inspection. Please remove your mask and open your backpack."
Then, what happened next was something that Sato Miwako would never forget!
She saw the man raise his hand.
He had a gun in his hand, raised it, pointed it at the head of the SAT member who was speaking, and pulled the trigger without hesitation.
boom.
A crisp and loud gunshot rang out in the hotel lobby, the echo bouncing back and forth in the empty hall for several seconds.
The SAT player's head snapped back, and he fell straight down like a chopped-down log, his head hitting the marble floor with a dull thud. Blood quickly spread from beneath him.
Another SAT member reacted quickly, immediately raising his rifle to try to return fire, but the man's second shot had already landed.
boom.
The second person also fell down.
After a brief moment of deathly silence, the entire hotel lobby erupted into chaos. The receptionist screamed and crouched behind the counter, while several travelers checking out scrambled to hide in a corner, knocking over tables and chairs and scattering luggage everywhere.
Sato Miwako stood frozen in place, as if someone had pressed the pause button on her.
She stared wide-eyed at the SAT player lying on the ground—his eyes were still open, but they were unfocused.
She had worked as a police officer for several years and had seen many violent crime scenes and even corpses.
But I have never seen a living person get shot in the head in front of me when I was less than ten meters away.
The feeling at that moment was completely different from looking at a photo!
Inspector Megure reacted much faster than she did.
He grabbed Sato Miwako's wrist and yanked her towards a marble pillar, growling in a low voice, "Crouch down! Don't stand there!!"
After the two hid behind the pillar, Inspector Megure's heart was pounding, but he tried his best to remain calm. He reached out and pressed down hard on Miwako Sato's shoulder, saying, "Listen to me, don't look up or make a sound. Wait for my instructions."
After saying these words, he quickly cursed in his mind!
He knows it!
He knew this was a very complicated situation, and he had no control over it at all!
But thinking about it now is useless, because the man with the backpack has already started to walk slowly toward the hotel entrance with his gun at the ready.
