Chapter 89 Capturing Kogoro Mouri for a Drive
Conan and Kogoro Mouri had just finished their investigation outside the fire scene.
The two walked along the winding cobblestone street in the town toward the hotel.
Kogoro Mouri walked ahead, his hands in his pockets, his head slightly lowered, and he kept muttering something to himself.
He took long strides, the soles of his shoes making a clattering sound on the stone slabs, which was particularly clear on the quiet street.
He wiped the sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand as he walked, his tone filled with frustration at wanting to get out of this awful place as soon as possible:
"This case is too bizarre... More than forty people are all dead, not a single survivor was left, not even a single witness."
"How are we supposed to find out? By guessing? I think we should just pack our things and head back to Tokyo. I don't want to stay on this wretched island for another minute."
Conan followed behind him, head down, hands in his pockets, but unlike Kogoro Mouri's pure restlessness, his mind was racing.
He was still repeatedly processing the information he had received from Asai Shigemi the previous night.
Conan dares not, and cannot, completely believe what Dr. Asai says!
But he was certain of at least one thing: that seemingly harmless President Lin Shen was definitely not an ordinary boss!
Who exactly is he? An assassin? A secret agent? A member of some organization?
Why is he here? And why is he helping Asai Narumi with this?
The answers to these questions are like a pile of scattered puzzle pieces, swirling around in Conan's mind, never quite coming together.
Just then, a sudden burst of gunfire rang out from afar.
Da da da da da!
It wasn't just a few sporadic pistol shots, but a continuous, dense barrage of automatic weapon fire, interspersed with several muffled, powerful explosions, as if something heavy had been blown apart underground.
Conan and Kogoro Mouri stopped almost simultaneously.
Kogoro Mouri abruptly turned his head, his gaze fixed on the direction from which the gunshot had come. The lazy and impatient expression on his face vanished in an instant, replaced by a tension and unease that he rarely showed.
His voice was noticeably hoarse: "That direction... is the hotel!"
Conan's heart sank.
He blurted out, "Sister Xiaolan is still at the hotel!"
Kogoro Mouri did not reply.
Without even a second's hesitation, he was launched like a spring, and sprinted toward the hotel.
His leather shoes made a rapid, messy sound on the stone pavement, and the hem of his coat was lifted high by the wind as he ran.
Conan gritted his teeth and followed behind him, his two legs running at the fastest speed that his age could manage, his lungs already starting to feel hot.
But they hadn't run very far.
After running for about two or three hundred meters, a black Hummer drove out from the side intersection ahead. The engine roared deep and powerfully, and the car was tall and wide, almost taking up half of the street.
The car slowly came to a stop beside them.
Kogoro Mouri, panting, instinctively assumed they were police officers or rescue workers from the island. He quickly stepped closer to the driver's side window, bent down, and tried to ask:
"Excuse me, what happened at the hotel—"
He didn't finish his sentence.
The car window rolled down.
What emerged from the car window wasn't a police badge or identification, but a dark handgun, its muzzle firmly and precisely pressed against Kogoro Mouri's forehead.
The cold metallic touch penetrated his forehead, causing Kogoro Mouri to freeze instantly, as if someone had pressed the pause button.
His mouth was open but he didn't close it, but the rest of his words were stuck in his throat.
Lin Shen never expected to run into Kogoro Mouri and Conan here.
He had just had a fight with the SAT team in front of the hotel. He drove his Hummer, which he had summoned using cheat codes, out of the side road to go to the dock, but he ran into these two people at the corner.
Isn't this a coincidence?
Since fate brought us together, there must be a reason.
I just happen to need a driver, you're the one!
Mouri Kogoro!
Lin Shen held the gun firmly to Kogoro Mouri's forehead and said in a deliberately lowered voice, "Get in and drive."
Kogoro Mouri looked at the man in front of him who was wrapped up tightly.
His hat was pulled low, and his face was covered with a black mask, revealing only his eyes.
Those eyes held no superfluous emotion, as calm as a stagnant pool.
Cold sweat began to bead on his forehead, and he could feel his clenched fist trembling slightly, but he also knew that now was not the time to play the hero.
"Okay...okay." Kogoro Mouri didn't dare to do anything reckless. He swallowed hard, obediently opened the driver's side door, and got in.
He moved slowly, raising his hands to shoulder height, trying to project an image of "I won't resist".
Conan stood to the side and saw Kogoro Mouri being forced into a car at gunpoint. His first thought was, "This is an opportunity"—he could take the chance to escape and report to the police.
But after his gaze swept over the black Hummer and the man with a gun inside, he quickly changed his mind.
Even Conan doesn't need to guess; he knows that the man wrapped up so tightly is Lin Shen, who slaughtered dozens of people in the Black Rock Mansion last night!
He knew how dangerous this guy was, and he also knew that this guy was about to run away!
If he lets Lin Shen disappear right under his nose, it will be difficult to find him again in the future.
Conan made a decision immediately!
He pretended to be a frightened child, hunched his shoulders, and whispered, "Do I want to get on the bus too?" Then, without waiting for Lin Shen's reply, he "frightenedly" opened the bus door and nimbly climbed in.
Lin Shen was well aware of Conan's little scheme.
He sat in the back seat, glanced at Conan through the eyes peeking out from above the mask, and quickly weighed his options in less than a second.
Fine, if you want to follow, then follow.
Since Conan loves to join in the fun, then let's go.
If I accidentally get killed by a stray bullet, it's not my fault.
The Hummer restarted, its tires screeching briefly on the cobblestones, and the vehicle lurched forward.
Lin Shen sat in the back seat, lowered the muzzle of his gun slightly, and said to Kogoro Mouri in the driver's seat in a very calm tone, "Head to the dock."
"Don't panic, there might be stray bullets flying by on the road later."
Upon hearing this, Kogoro Mouri broke out in an even deeper cold sweat.
He gripped the steering wheel with both hands, his knuckles turning white from excessive force.
But he had no choice but to nod repeatedly, his voice trembling uncontrollably: "Okay...okay. I...I'll drive, I'll drive."
