Chapter 96 The Troubles of Having Money
When the ship docked, the wind at the Tokyo pier was much gentler than that at Tsukikage Island.
The fishing boat rocked gently a few times by the shore, and the boat owner tied the mooring rope to the iron stake on the dock and made a neat knot.
He turned back and shouted into the cabin, "We're here! We're here! You can get off now!"
Lin Shen came out of the cabin, jumped ashore, and stretched his neck, which had become stiff from sitting for so long.
Mingmei followed behind him, carrying a small handbag.
Next up are Kogoro Mouri, Ran, and Conan.
Then the ship owner and a few employees helped carry the heavy suitcases onto the dock one by one.
There were eight large crates in total, each one incredibly heavy. The boat owner's face turned red as he carried the last one. After putting it down, he couldn't help but shake his arm and mutter, "Hey boss, what's in these crates? Rocks?"
Lin Shen smiled and said, "Pretty much."
Conan stood on the dock, his hands in his pockets, looking at the eight large suitcases that were being carried aboard, his gaze sweeping back and forth between the suitcases and the forest.
He pushed up his newly replaced glasses.
He deliberately used a child's innocent voice to ask, "President Lin... these boxes are quite heavy, what's inside?"
Lin Shen glanced down at Conan.
He knew perfectly well what the kid was up to—trying to get information out of him, testing him, and looking for a flaw in his answer.
If it were someone else, they might give vague answers, change the subject, or use something else to brush it off.
But Lin Shen didn't intend to do that.
He felt that playing dirty tricks against someone like Conan was pointless.
The more you try to hide it, the more he'll want to dig deeper.
The opponent is Conan; just play your cards right!
So Lin Shen squatted down, reached out and rubbed Conan's head, making the kid's already messy hair even messier.
He smiled and said in a very relaxed tone, "This place? It's all gold. Would you like to see it?"
When he said this, his smile was very gentle and his tone was very friendly.
But to Conan, that smile looked like a threat.
Conan's expression froze for about half a second.
Looking at Lin Shen's smiling face, a thought quickly crossed his mind: If this person really opens the box for him to see, will he still be able to return to Xiao Lan's side alive after seeing it?
He immediately shrank back, took half a step back, waved his hands repeatedly, and forced a very standard, innocent elementary school student smile: "No need, no need!"
"Where would you get gold from on this island? Haha... President Lin really loves to joke! Hahaha..."
After he finished speaking, he chuckled a few times in a cooperative manner, and then promptly shut his mouth.
Lin Shen stood up, dusted off his hands (which weren't actually dust), smiled at Conan, and said nothing more.
This is exactly the effect he wanted.
Make things clear and let Conan decide for himself whether or not to continue asking questions.
Although this kid is very curious, he at least has a basic will to survive.
----------
Time flies, and a few days have passed.
Tokyo, Beikacho.
The wind chimes outside the 221B coffee shop rang once, and the door was pushed open and then closed again.
Lin Shen walked in from outside, wearing a clean gray short-sleeved shirt, looking completely different from his gunpowder-covered appearance on Moonshadow Island.
He walked to the bar and sat on a high stool. Akemi was behind the bar, pressing buttons on a calculator. The numbers on the screen were flashing, and her fingers were typing rapidly, the clattering sound particularly clear in the quiet café.
A ledger was laid out in front of her, with several pages of handwritten lists next to it, densely filled with various items.
She would tick off a number on the list as she pressed the buttons, occasionally pausing to frown and think for a moment before continuing to press the buttons.
Lin Shen didn't rush her. He poured himself a glass of water and leaned against the bar to drink it slowly.
After a while, Mingmei finally put down the calculator. She looked up, her expression a mixture of disbelief and barely suppressed excitement.
She turned the ledger towards Lin Shen, pointed to a few lines of handwritten numbers with her finger, and said with a slight upward inflection in her voice, "Mr. Lin... I just finished taking stock of all the gains from Moonshadow Island."
She took a deep breath, as if mentally preparing herself, and asked, "Guess how many there are in total?"
Lin Shen put down his water glass: "How much?"
Akemi pointed to the last line of numbers in the ledger and read it aloud, word by word: "The drug cartel's cash and real estate holdings in Tokyo total approximately three billion yen!"
"The total weight of the gold is a little over five tons."
"Plus, the various jewelry, watches, and precious metals found in their safe add up to another sum."
After she finished reading, she leaned back against the counter behind the bar, letting out a long sigh that sounded like she'd been holding it in for a long time: "I've never imagined I could be this rich in my entire life!!"
After listening, Lin Shen remained silent for two or three seconds, and then couldn't help but sigh, "Working hard to earn money is not as quick as raiding someone's house."
He was genuinely shocked by the number.
While he was at the Black Rock Mansion, he just thought that the drug dealers must have a lot of stock, but he didn't expect it to be this much.
This also shows how huge the profit chain behind that seemingly insignificant Moonshadow Island really is!
He only destroyed Moonshadow Island, the central hub. If he were to follow this line of inquiry further, he might be able to uncover a bigger fish!
However, after thinking about it, Lin Shen decided to give up.
Know when to quit while you're ahead and secure your position for now!
After a moment of excitement, Akemi quickly calmed down.
She picked up a pen from the table, tapped the surface lightly with the cap, and frowned slightly: "However... having a lot of money also has its troubles."
"With three billion in cash, plus all that gold and jewelry, it's all piled up there. It's far too slow for our coffee shop to handle all that washing."
"Even if you work yourself to the bone for a month, you can only launder a few million yen."
"At this rate, how long will it take to launder 3 billion?"
Lin Shen nodded; he had been thinking about this issue for the past few days.
The money was in hand, but it was all illicit and couldn't be brought to light.
You can't deposit money in the bank, you can't buy a house or a car, and you can't spend money extravagantly.
If the police notice this and trace it back to us, we'll be in big trouble.
He now finally understood why those drug lords in movies always looked so worried—having too much money and not knowing where to spend it was a whole new kind of pain.
He thought for a moment and then said, "We must establish our own money laundering channels as soon as possible. Relying on the organization's channels indefinitely is not a solution—they take too much cut."
Mingmei nodded in deep agreement: "Yes. I used the organization's channels once before, and they took 30% of it. I was heartbroken for days."
As she spoke, she put down her pen and rested her hands on the bar counter. "Actually, I have an idea—we could try to leverage Yoko's celebrity status."
Lin Shen raised an eyebrow: "How so?" Mingmei explained: "Okino Yoko is currently very popular and has a large fan base."
"We can collaborate with her to launch a '90% off coupon' campaign."
"Fans can use coupons to make a purchase at the cafe. A cup of coffee that originally costs 1,000 yen will be discounted to 100 yen."
"It may seem like a losing proposition, but in reality, as long as the turnover increases, we will have a large amount of legitimate income to cover up the illicit money."
"A monthly turnover of several million can quickly reach tens of millions."
After listening, Lin Shen thought about it seriously for a while, then nodded: "This idea is fine. I can talk to Yoko about it."
But he paused, his tone turning slightly somber, "But this is still too slow. Tens of millions a month, that's only a few hundred million a year. To launder all three billion plus that gold, it would take at least several years."
"It takes too long, and there are too many variables in the process."
He stood up from the bar stool, walked to the window, looked at the pedestrians coming and going on the street outside, and after a few seconds of silence, turned to Mingmei and said, "Here's what we'll do. You contact the organization later and see if they have any assassination missions recently. I'll take a few jobs first."
Mingmei was taken aback: "An assassination mission? Mr. Lin, didn't you say you wanted to keep a low profile for a while?"
Lin Shen shook his head: "Times have changed. What we lack most now is not security, but clean start-up capital."
"The compensation paid by the organization is all clean money, transferred through legal channels."
"Just like the last payment, when you sold the 'antiques,' you went through the proper auction house channels. When the money arrived, you paid every penny of tax. It was all clean and no one could find fault with it."
He paused for a moment, then added, "Once we've saved up enough clean start-up capital, I'll try to get you or myself a title of 'artist'."
"Whether it's a painter or a sculptor, as long as there are formal art transaction records, it's not uncommon for a painting to sell for tens or hundreds of millions of dollars in the industry."
Mingmei's eyes lit up after hearing this.
She quickly understood Lin Shen's entire plan.
First, use the organization's task rewards to accumulate the first pot of clean money, then use this money to package yourself as a legitimate figure in the art world, and then launder billions of dirty money through art transactions.
Although each step of this chain requires time and connections to build, it is logically sound.
She nodded, her tone filled with renewed enthusiasm: "Okay. I'll contact the people over there tonight to see if there are any suitable assignments."
Lin Shen hummed in agreement, sat back down on the bar stool, picked up the glass of water that was now mostly cold, drank it all in one gulp, and then placed the glass on the bar counter with a crisp clinking sound.
He looked out the window at the afternoon sunlight streaming onto the street and felt that things were gradually getting back on track.
