Chapter 104 Longline Fishing
The sea breeze, carrying a salty and damp scent, swept over me, instantly invigorating me.
Wu Sui stood on the deck, stretched his limbs, and turned to call out to Chen Yang, who was huddled by the cabin.
"Xiaoyang, don't just stand there, come over and lend a hand with the work."
Chen Yang struggled to his feet, feeling dizzy and lightheaded, and shuffled over.
I don't know if it's because we changed boats, but he didn't throw up today, but he's still not much better; he's still listless.
Wu Sui pointed to the plastic basket on the ground, which contained neatly coiled longline fishing lines, with hundreds of leader lines and hooks hanging densely around the edge of the basket.
"First, straighten out these sub-lines, don't let them get tangled together."
Wu Sui picked up a thread and straightened it.
"If this thing gets tangled in the water, it'll be a waste. It has to go smoothly when we lower it down the boat."
Chen Yang nodded and, imitating Wu Sui, separated the leader lines one by one and hung them in the slots along the edge of the boat.
Wu Gang leaned out of the cockpit and shouted back.
"Second brother, the shrimp are all being kept in the live water tank. They're about to die. We'll be there in another twenty minutes."
"Understood, brother." Wu Sui replied, then turned and went to the live water tank to scoop up a net full of live shrimp.
I bought these shrimp from Lin Tao before leaving home.
Wu Sui originally wanted to buy some cheap dead bait, but considering that he was coming for a big catch tonight, he gritted his teeth and bought more than 500 lively prawns.
"Xiaoyang, watch carefully, I'll teach you how to hang shrimp."
Wu Sui picked up a shrimp and a fishhook.
Chen Yang quickly moved closer, his eyes wide open.
"There's a trick to hanging these shrimp; you can't just string them up haphazardly, or they'll die within minutes of being put in the water."
As Wu Sui spoke, he inserted the fishhook into the second-to-last segment of the shrimp's tail, avoiding the shrimp line, and gently lifted it until the hook tip was exposed.
"Look, hanging them like this allows the shrimp to swim in the water. If they can swim, they'll attract bigger fish, which are the best eaters of live creatures."
He reattached the baited leader to the side of the boat, and the shrimp was still twitching on the hook.
Chen Yang picked up a shrimp and tried to thread it onto the hook.
As a result, my hand trembled and I poked it directly into the shrimp's head. The shrimp thrashed a couple of times and then stopped moving.
"Oh dear, brother-in-law, this shrimp is dead." Chen Yang said, somewhat annoyed.
"It's okay, it's normal at first. Be gentle, don't crush it, just follow the tail." Wu Sui patiently instructed.
The two men worked on the deck for almost twenty minutes and finally managed to hook all five hundred hooks with live shrimp.
The boat slowly approached the cliff and reef area.
The waves here are noticeably larger than outside, crashing against the rocks with a dull thud.
Wu Sui straightened up, silently recited in his mind, and activated the system radar.
A virtual screen appeared in front of me, scanning an area of 50 meters around the sea.
Scattered green and white dots of light appeared at the edges of the screen.
Wu Sui didn't even glance at it.
He started this longline fishing because he saw that golden spot of light in this deep water area a couple of days ago.
That was the golden light that represented top-quality goods. Last time, he could only watch it wander around because he didn't have the tools. Today, he came prepared.
The boat continued forward, rounding a headland, and ahead lay the cliff area on the back of the small island.
"Second brother, we're almost there!" Wu Gang reduced the boat's speed, and the engine's roar turned into a low, sputtering sound.
"At this speed of about 5 knots, it's time to cast the line."
Wu Sui stared at the radar screen, scanning it round and round.
There are many green dots, densely clustered near a reef, indicating that there is a rich fish population below.
But the golden dot of light that I had been longing for was nowhere to be found.
"Could it have swum away?" Wu Sui wondered to himself.
Wu Gang stepped out of the cockpit and saw Wu Sui staring blankly at the sea. He patted him on the shoulder.
"Second brother, there are many reefs underwater in this area, and the current is strong. Usually, large ships dare not come here to cast their nets, so there will definitely be plenty of fish."
Wu Gang pointed to the dark, murky sea ahead and said, "I think this place is perfect; there's bound to be something there."
Wu Sui put away the radar, turned around and smiled.
"Okay, brother, I'll do as you say, I'll put it here."
In fact, with just three people working on their twelve-meter-long boat, setting out one or two thousand hooks wouldn't be a problem.
But Wu Sui's original intention was to target specific targets, specifically large trucks.
Wu Gang, on the other hand, was very frugal and worried about wasting bait by putting too many empty hooks in, since live shrimp weren't cheap.
Neither brother mentioned adding hooks; they decided to test the waters with 500 hooks first.
"Xiao Yang, are you ready?" Wu Sui walked to the stern of the boat and picked up one end of the main line.
"Alright, brother-in-law." Chen Yang rubbed his hands together, stood next to the plastic basket, and stood ready.
"Big brother, keep this speed, try to stay in a straight line and avoid the reefs," Wu Suichong shouted from the cockpit.
"Don't worry, leave it to me." Wu Gang gripped the helm tightly, his eyes fixed on the sea surface illuminated by the searchlights ahead.
Wu Sui picked up the buoy and sinker connected to the main line and threw them into the sea with a "plop".
The main storyline begins to rapidly expand outwards.
"Xiaoyang, watch your rhythm, don't mess up the hook."
Chen Yang agreed and quickly picked up a leader line with shrimp bait attached, then threw it into the water in the direction the main line was pulling.
"Don't hesitate, just throw it with the current."
The three worked together seamlessly.
Wu Gang steered the boat from the front, Wu Sui managed the line and controlled the speed from the back, and Chen Yang was responsible for casting the hook.
The fishing boat traced a gentle arc on the sea surface, and one by one, the baited hooks sank into the deep water.
Once, Chen Yang was too slow and the leader almost got tangled in the main line. Wu Sui reacted quickly, grabbed the main line, shook it, and straightened the line, which startled Chen Yang and made him break out in a cold sweat.
"Don't panic, keep your pace," Wu Sui reassured her.
In less than half an hour, all 500 hooks were deployed.
Wu Sui threw the last buoy into the water and clapped his hands.
"Alright, mission accomplished."
Chen Yang shook his slightly sore arms and grinned.
"Brother-in-law, this job looks simple, but it's really tiring for your arms."
Wu Gang brought the boat to a stop, stepped out of the cockpit, and handed Wu Sui a bottle of water.
"When you cast a longline, you have to wait at least three or four hours before you can reel it in, otherwise the fish won't have taken the bait."
He glanced at his watch. "It's still early, what should we do?"
Wu Sui unscrewed the bottle cap and took a big gulp, then pointed to the dark island silhouette in front of him.
"Brother, let's go around to the front of the island."
"Nobody usually comes to this island. Let's take advantage of the low tide and go up there to take a look. Maybe we can find some good stuff. We can't just sit here on the boat doing nothing."
"Okay, I'll go start the boat." Wu Gang thought it made sense and turned back to the cockpit.
The fishing boat accelerated again, circled the cliff, and headed towards the island.
The front of the island is a gentle mudflat connected to a large group of reefs.
Today happens to be spring tide, and the seawater has receded far out, revealing large areas of rocks covered with seaweed and barnacles.
