Chapter 196 Buying a Car
The wind is incredibly strong today, and white waves are rolling on the sea.
Unable to go out to sea, the villagers were bored out of their minds, and most of them gathered under the big banyan tree at the village entrance.
Several old men were playing chess, surrounded by a group of people offering advice.
On the other side, several women were holding melon seeds and peanuts, chatting idly about this and that.
Somehow the conversation turned to the Wu family.
"Hey, have you heard? Wu's second son has struck it rich recently. I heard he made tens of thousands on one voyage."
Aunt Li spat the sunflower seed shells on the ground and rolled her eyes.
"Come on, tens of thousands? Are the fish in this sea made of gold?"
"I saw Chen Xue buy salt at the convenience store the day before yesterday. She didn't even cut off a piece of meat. If the Wu family were really rich, would they be so stingy?"
Chen Ergou crossed his legs, his face full of disdain.
"You guys don't know anything. They're just pretending to be poor."
"I heard from the people at the docks that Wu Sui's boats were packed when he came back from his voyage, but..."
He paused, deliberately keeping everyone in suspense.
"But what?" Several women nearby quickly gathered around.
"But making money in the sea isn't that easy. Wu Sui just got lucky, like a blind cat stumbling upon a dead mouse."
"I heard they almost came back empty-handed yesterday; they probably lost a lot of money."
A burst of laughter erupted from the crowd.
Everyone is willing to believe that others are just lucky, and will never admit that others are more capable than themselves.
Just then, a low rumble came from the dirt road at the entrance of the village.
Everyone under the banyan tree stopped what they were doing and turned to look at it.
A brand-new red and black motorcycle drove up along the dirt road.
The sunlight shone on the fuel tank, and the shiny paint made it hard to open one's eyes.
Wu Sui was wearing a simple white T-shirt and sunglasses perched on the bridge of her nose.
With long legs, he held the handlebars with one hand, took off his sunglasses, and grinned at the people under the tree.
"Aunties and uncles, are you enjoying the cool air?"
There was complete silence under the banyan tree.
Everyone stared wide-eyed at the brand-new motorcycle.
Beside the big banyan tree, Little Tiger was lying in the mud, playing marbles with a few little radish kids, their bottoms sticking up.
Upon hearing the noise and recognizing the person on the motorcycle, the kid's eyes lit up instantly. He didn't even bother to pick up the glass marbles on the ground and scrambled to his feet.
"Second Uncle! It's my second uncle! My second uncle bought a motorcycle!"
Little Tiger screamed excitedly and ran towards Wu Sui with his short legs.
She ran up to the motorcycle, stretched out her dirty little hand, wanting to touch it but not daring to, circling the motorcycle and swallowing hard.
Wu Sui burst into laughter when he saw his nephew's expression.
He grabbed Xiao Hu by the back of his collar, scooped him up, and placed him on the gas tank in front of him.
"Hold on tight, your second uncle will take you for a ride."
Little Tiger's face turned bright red with excitement, and he shouted at the top of his lungs.
"Hurry, hurry, Uncle, drive faster!"
The motorcycle kicked up a cloud of dust and sped away.
The group of children who were just playing marbles with Xiaohu under the banyan tree have all gone crazy.
Their eyes were wide open, and they were practically drooling.
"I want to sit too! I want to sit too!"
"Uncle Wu, could you help me out?"
Seven or eight little kids, with their short legs, ran wildly behind the motorcycle, eating dust as they went, and howling at the top of their lungs.
Wu Sui deliberately slowed down the car and drove around in circles on the dirt roads in the village with Xiao Hu.
Little Tiger sat in the front, shouting excitedly. When they passed by other people's houses, he deliberately yelled to show off.
"Look at my second uncle's big motorcycle!"
Hearing the commotion, many villagers peeked out from their courtyards to look around.
Under the banyan tree, everyone came to their senses.
Chen Ergou's eyes nearly popped out of their sockets as he pointed in the direction Wu Sui had left, his words stammering.
"Ring... Suzuki 125? Holy crap, this is a genuine imported Suzuki 125."
The people nearby quickly moved closer.
"What Suzuki? How much does this motorcycle cost?"
Chen Ergou swallowed.
"Don't give me that number!"
He reached out one hand, his eyes filled with envy.
"It will cost at least five or six thousand, and possibly more."
The crowd erupted in chaos.
"My God, five or six thousand yuan? That's enough to build three big brick houses."
"Wow, Wu Lao Er has really struck it rich! His motorcycle is even more expensive than the village chief's."
Aunt Li dropped all the melon seeds in her hand to the ground, her face turning pale and then flushed.
Just now she was mocking Chen Xue for not being able to afford meat, but now she's riding around on a motorcycle worth thousands of yuan.
This isn't about not being able to afford meat; it's a slap in the face.
"They've got money to burn!" Aunt Li muttered sourly.
"Buying a motorcycle, can it feed you or clothe you? I think he's just showing off, he'll squander all his money sooner or later."
"Alright, you're just jealous," an older woman next to her said, pursing her lips.
"Ah Sui is capable of making money now, she can buy whatever she wants. If your old Li had that ability, you'd be strutting around like a mile a minute."
Aunt Li was speechless, turned around and stormed off.
Wu Sui drove Xiao Hu around the village twice, thoroughly enjoying himself, before finally heading back home.
"Second Uncle, this car is awesome! It's much better than a bicycle!" Xiao Hu shouted at the top of his lungs in the wind.
Wu Sui smiled and patted his little head.
"Is that exciting? When your second uncle makes a lot of money, he'll buy a four-wheeled car and take you to school every day."
"Really?" Little Tiger's eyes widened in surprise.
"When has your second uncle ever lied to you? But you have to study hard. If you get the lowest score, you won't even be allowed to touch a motorcycle, let alone a car."
Xiao Hu nodded vigorously, like he was pounding garlic.
As Wu Sui approached his home, he slowed down.
The old house gate was wide open. As soon as the car was parked, Xiao Hu couldn't wait to jump out and run into the yard, shouting as he ran.
"Grandpa, Grandma, Mom... my second uncle bought a big motorcycle!"
Everyone inside the room was woken up by that shout.
As soon as Wu Sui had parked the car, Xiao Hu started shouting at the top of his lungs.
A group of people rushed out of the house.
Leading the way was the eldest brother, Wu Gang, followed by Chen Yang and Wang Dazhu, with even their father, Chen Jianguo, standing at the door.
"Holy crap, Sui, you bought a car?"
Wu Gang's eyes widened in disbelief, and he rushed out the door in three strides.
His calloused hands groped around on the fuel tank, drool practically dripping from his mouth.
"Wow, this must be worth a lot of money!" Wu Gang exclaimed in amazement as he touched it.
Wu Sui got out of the car and casually pulled out the key, tossing it in his hand.
"Big brother, want to give it a try?"
Wu Gang rubbed his hands together and chuckled.
"That's great, my hands have been itching to get started for ages."
Wu Sui handed over the keys, preparing to go up and teach him how to use the clutch to shift gears.
This motorcycle is different from a bicycle; if you step on the accelerator too hard, it will lurch forward.
"Big brother, hold the one on the left first..."
Before he could finish speaking, Wu Gang had already stomped onto it.
Insert the key and start the engine.
Hold the clutch with your left hand and step down with your left foot.
Engage first gear and twist the accelerator with your right hand.
boom!
With a low growl from the engine, the motorcycle steadily lurched forward.
Wu Gang pulled his feet back, leaned forward slightly, and drew a beautiful semicircle at the doorway.
His movements were fluid and graceful; he rode even more skillfully than Wu Sui.
