After the system went into hibernation, Xu Ran rarely returned to the space. Although he was in a lot of pain, he preferred to stay awake.

Startled awake by the noise in the ward, Xu Ran opened her eyes and looked towards the door, but it wasn't the person she expected.

When Madam Pei saw that he was awake, she put down the food box: "Something came up at the company last night, so I had to call Xudong away temporarily. That's why I came to check on you first."

Xu Ran hummed in agreement: "Madam's complexion is getting better and better."

Madam Pei said gently, "You've been sleeping much better than before lately."

"That's good."

Xu Ran was pale, and his blue and white striped hospital gown was too big, making him look even younger than his actual age. Madam Pei felt a little soft-hearted when she saw him.

She pulled up a chair and sat down in front of the hospital bed, carefully choosing her words: "Xiao Ran, it's not your fault what happened before. It was our generation's fault that we dragged the child down for nothing. Don't make yourself feel bad because of this."

Xu Ran was naturally not upset by this. He was not from this world and had no guilt towards the Pei family, but Madam Pei's gentleness still surprised him.

"Even if it's to repay a debt of gratitude, you shouldn't have risked your life. You got the shares yourself, so they should be yours."

Madam Pei was a kind and intelligent woman. Although she was very grateful to Xu Ran for saving her husband, she did not want Xu Ran to suffer the same fate as she had in the past.

Xu Ran shook her head: "That's not what I'm after."

He wasn't doing this to repay a debt of gratitude.

Madam Pei had prepared what she was going to say, but when she saw the bright seriousness in those dark, inky eyes, she couldn't utter a single word.

It wasn't her own child, and she had never bothered to teach him. With the misunderstanding finally cleared up, her knot in her heart, which had been tied up for more than ten years, slowly untied. Xu Ran was no longer a child.

A smile appeared in Madam Pei's eyes: "I know, Xu Dong told me."

Xu Ran was stunned: "He said...what to you?"

Madam Pei found Xu Ran's behavior quite rare and chuckled, "Don't worry, Auntie doesn't concern herself with your young people's relationship problems."

She called herself "Auntie," which made Xu Ran feel strange.

"However," Madam Pei thought for a moment, then added, "You are young, and there are some things I want to tell you. Between two people, nothing else is scary, but what's most scary is not speaking up. If misunderstandings pile up one after another, even the best of people can't withstand it."

Xu Ran nodded gently: "I know."

Xu Ran had always known that Madam Pei was reasonable, but it was truly remarkable that she had gone to such lengths.

Perhaps because he had suffered so much himself, he couldn't bear to add any more obstacles for the children.

Perhaps because she felt she owed Pei Xudong something, she was immersed in her pain for many years, preventing her child from growing up in a happy and harmonious family.

But Pei Xudong must think she is the best mother in the world.

--

By the time Xu Ran was discharged from the hospital, the culprit had already been imprisoned. How could a business dispute have developed into such a deadly situation? A closer look would have unearthed old grudges and feuds, but now, the dust has finally settled.

Pei Xudong strictly followed the doctor's orders, taking meticulous care of the patient even after discharge. He did not allow Xu Ran to return to the Pei family home, but instead went inside, asked for the password to Xu Ran's apartment, and left his own luggage there in advance.

Pei Xudong opened the car door for Xu Ran and then tried to fasten her seatbelt.

Xu Ran grabbed Pei Xudong's wrist and said helplessly, "Am I crippled?"

Pei Xudong awkwardly withdrew his hand and adjusted his glasses: "Sorry..."

Xu Ran chuckled: "Sorry for what?"

Pei Xudong drove attentively the whole way. Although he has always been like this, this time he was a little too serious.

Xu Ran stared thoughtfully at Pei Xudong's tightly pursed lips.

The moment the door opened, Pei Xudong instinctively avoided Xu Ran's gaze.

He tried to sound calm: "You've been discharged from the hospital, and I was thinking of celebrating, so..."

Xu Ran chuckled and looked at the table full of dishes. He knew why Pei Xudong wasn't there this morning, but had rushed to the hospital after he finished his discharge procedures.

Xu Ran asked slowly, "Did you prepare all of this?"

Was the red wine, cake, and bouquet all prepared by the person next to you?

"Yes," Pei Xudong said stiffly, his fingers unconsciously rubbing his thigh, "I've been learning for several days, it shouldn't be too bad..."

Xu Ran was speechless. It was a cake she had made herself.

He then awkwardly turned his head away and said rudely, "You made this? No wonder it doesn't look very good."

Compared to those from cake shops, they aren't particularly beautiful, but they're not ugly either.

This was the first time Xu Ran had ever been so sarcastic towards him, which also masked the fluctuations in her own emotions.

Pei Xudong stared intently as Xu Ran took a bite of cake. "How was it? Not bad, right?"

Unable to harden her heart towards Pei Xudong, Xu Ran smiled and said, "It's delicious."

It's really delicious.

Upon hearing this, Pei Xudong's eyes lit up. His pupils were much lighter in color than Xu Ran's, and at this moment, his eyes shone as if they were tinged with gold.

Xu Ran was momentarily stunned, and as if possessed, she reached out and took off Pei Xudong's glasses. Those eyes were truly beautiful.

"Can you see it clearly?"

Pei Xudong paused for a moment, then said, "Okay."

He only has mild nearsightedness, and it doesn't affect him much if he doesn't wear glasses.

Xu Ran picked up the bottle of wine on the table and poured a glass: "Since we've prepared wine, let's have some."

Pei Xudong quickly stopped him, moving the wine glass in front of himself: "No, you've just been discharged from the hospital, you can't drink."

Xu Ran raised her eyebrows. She had prepared wine but wouldn't let anyone drink it. Was this wine prepared for her by Pei Xudong?

It really was prepared for himself; Pei Xudong was holding the wine to bolster his courage.

He was genuinely afraid that Xu Ran would drink recklessly, so he grabbed the glass and quickly gulped down a mouthful, choking and coughing uncontrollably.

Xu Ran seemed to chuckle softly, and Pei Xudong felt a little deflated, knowing he must be in a terrible state.

A hand suddenly patted his back lightly, followed by the casual voice of the person behind him.

"Why are you drinking so fast? I'm not going to fight you for it."

Pei Xudong looked up at him, her eyes red from coughing, her tone flat but inexplicably aggrieved: "You're laughing at me."

Xu Ran couldn't help but laugh again, then tried to cover it up: "I wasn't laughing at you."

He was just about to help the man, who was coughing so hard he was bent over, to his feet when Pei Xudong suddenly said:

"Xu Ran, can I pursue you?"

Xu Ran's hand trembled slightly, and she froze in place.

Pei Xudong looked at Xu Ran, not daring to miss any reaction from him.

Xu Ran's nonchalant expression vanished, and after a long silence, he said softly, "No need to chase after them."

Pei Xudong's breath caught in his throat. He dared not delve into what Xu Ran meant, and could only ask blankly, "What?"

"No need to chase me, I like you too." Xu Ran smiled with relief, her tone solemn.

A sudden pang of sadness welled up in Pei Xudong's heart: "When...did you start liking me?"

"It's very early." Xu Ran pulled Pei Xudong up.

The first day he entered this world, Pei Xudong came to the hospital to pick him up and that one glance.

"Xu Ran, I really went too far." Pei Xudong's eyes reddened even more.

"You can't spoil me like that."
