From Martial Arts Dungeon to Master of Martial Arts
Chapter 31 Temporary Post in the Government Office
Holding the letter of recommendation, Mu Sheng walked to the tightly closed gate of the yamen. There was a petition drum in front of him, but it was just for show.
Knocking on it won't do any good; it might even get you locked up for disturbing the peace.
Unless you spend money to bribe your way in and have already made arrangements with them beforehand, forget about it.
Although he had only heard these things secondhand, he had never actually heard of this city lord doing anything.
The city lord of this world is not a local official like the county magistrate or prefect in his previous life; he is the controller of the entire city, and he decides right and wrong.
This naturally led to the overall style of the city.
If the city lord is kind, the people in the city can still live well; if the city lord is evil, then things will turn out like this.
He didn't go through the main entrance, but instead went to the side door and knocked on it.
"Knock knock knock".
After a long while, the small brown door opened, and a constable dressed in a black and red uniform walked out. He looked Mu Sheng up and down, especially noticing his Taoist robe, and said, "Taoist priest of Zhenyuan Temple, what brings you here?"
Mu Sheng immediately held up the letter of recommendation with both hands and said, "I was assigned here by the sect to hold this temporary post."
The constable immediately nodded and said, "In that case, come with me."
He turned and walked directly into the small door. Mu Sheng hurriedly followed. The door behind them clearly had some clever mechanism; it closed automatically without anyone controlling it.
Entering from the side, you don't enter the lobby, but rather a secluded garden.
Following a small path to the back of the lobby, I saw a large group of people gathered together.
"Place your bet now!!" a burly man with a bare upper body shouted.
Immediately, everyone's emotions were stirred, and one by one they stepped forward and placed their money on it.
"This way." The constable in front led Mu Sheng forward to a circular archway, pointed in this direction and said, "You can't just go in here anymore. The city lord lives inside and reports for duty every day. Just follow the path we came from and walk in."
"I've learned a lot," Mu Sheng said, clasping his hands in a fist salute.
Walking around the wall, you'll find a martial arts training ground and several houses. The main house's door is open, and people are talking inside.
The constable led Mu Sheng into the room, where a young man in a black outfit was standing upright. In front of him, a man dressed as a constable was sitting in a chair drinking tea. He glanced at Mu Sheng and said, "Another one."
The leading constable immediately clasped his hands respectfully and said, "This time it's the Zhenyuan Temple."
"I saw it." The constable glanced at him and waved his hand, saying, "Go down."
"Yes." The leading constable didn't dare to say anything more and hurriedly turned and left.
There were only three people left in the entire lobby.
The head constable looked at the two men and said, "You two are quite a coincidence today. One is from the Hundred Martial Sect, and the other is from the True Essence Temple. Both of you have come to take up your posts today."
Mu Sheng clasped his hands and said, "I am new here and hope that the constable will take good care of me."
He recognized him; this was the leading constable who had led the patrol when he came to the inner city on previous occasions.
The head constable immediately laughed and said, "You're quite the talker, but let me make this clear from the start: you're on temporary assignment, not officially employed. You definitely won't get the basic benefits, but I can give you a constable's uniform. As for weapons, you'll have to figure that out yourselves."
He glanced at the young man from the Hundred Martial Sect. Mu Sheng had a slightly protruding waist, indicating that he was carrying a weapon, while this young man was not.
The boy clearly looked troubled.
The head constable withdrew his gaze and said, "My name is Zhao Hu, and I am now the chief constable of Changshu City. I have the cultivation level of the Transformation Realm. I can't compare to the experts in your sect, but dealing with you is still easy for me, so you must obey me here."
"Moreover, since you are only on temporary assignment, the merit points exchanged by the City Lord's Office are useless to you. However, if you are willing to spend some money, you can purchase them from me. After all, you will be given ten taels of silver a month when you come here, which is more than enough."
Mu Sheng's heart skipped a beat, and he hurriedly asked, "May I ask, Constable, is it ten taels per person, or...?"
"Naturally, it's ten taels for the two of you. You can divide it yourselves then," Zhao Hu interrupted him directly, saying, "I won't get involved in the rest."
This is different from what was agreed upon.
Mu Sheng sighed inwardly; Zhao Hu clearly hadn't given them a chance to refute.
The boy next to him also looked dejected and did not refute.
Zhao Hu said, "In a little while, the person who just came in will take you to collect your clothes. You will report to the gate at Chenshi (7-9 AM) every day, patrol three times a day, and each patrol will only last for an hour. You will return home at Xushi (7-9 PM) at night."
Mu Sheng asked, "May I ask, Constable, is it the place that just entered from the side?"
Those people were gambling in groups.
"Not bad." Zhao Hu nodded, looking at the two meaningfully, and said, "Gather at the appointed time every day, and after your patrol, you are free to do as long as you don't leave the yamen. However, if there is a case, that's a different story."
"Perfect timing. There's a case in the northern outer city today. You two go change your clothes and come with me."
North Outer City.
Mu Sheng's heart skipped a beat. These constables usually wouldn't go to the outer city, especially not to the northern outer city.
It's probably related to Yu-Tzu.
"Qin Liang!!" Zhao Hu shouted, and the constable who had led Mu Sheng in earlier rushed in.
"Take the two of them to get their clothes."
"This way, please," Qin Liang said to Mu Sheng and the other person.
"Thank you for your trouble." Mu Sheng clasped his hands in a fist salute. The young man didn't say anything, and the two followed Qin Liang outside.
They simply walked out of the main house.
The young man from Baiwu Sect walked up to Mu Sheng and lowered his voice: "It seems you've been abandoned too."
Mu Sheng looked at him, puzzled, and asked, "Brother, what do you mean?"
The young man sighed and said, "My name is Chen Baisheng. You and I have been assigned to this yamen, which means we've been abandoned. We patrol for three hours a day and also need to keep an eye on some news. Where is there any time to practice martial arts? Only disciples who have been completely abandoned come to this yamen. After all, we should be studying hard and practicing diligently now."
Mu Sheng seemed to be deep in thought.
Normally speaking, coming to this government office is not only expensive, but also quite time-consuming.
Miao Yin clearly didn't think he had any future in martial arts. He said he was looking for someone smart, but in reality, he wanted the others to focus on practicing martial arts.
In a sense, he was also abandoned.
"It's still possible to find some time to practice martial arts," Mu Sheng said.
"Aren't you afraid of revealing our martial arts skills?" Chen Baisheng looked at Xiang Musheng incredulously. "If others learn our martial arts skills, they will definitely be punished by the sect."
It seems that Zhenyuan Temple doesn't care much about whether martial arts skills are leaked.
Mu Sheng didn't show it on his face, but Zhenyuan Temple had never said that one should hide one's martial arts skills.
Or rather, the true legacy of design was never taught to him.
"You two stop chatting. We've arrived. Let's find some suitable clothes," Qin Liang said to the two of them as he stopped in front of a warehouse.
