Chapter 209 Let Me Measure It
The morning of the eighth day of the lunar new year.
Su Nianhe didn't even have the strength to lift her arms at this moment, and her whole body slumped into the thick quilt.
The sky was just beginning to lighten, and the bed was warm and cozy.
Just as Su Nianhe was about to turn over, her waist tightened, and she was pulled into a hard embrace by an iron arm.
The man had just broken his vows, and all the celibacy he had maintained for twenty-seven years was made up for last night. Now he was as energetic as a wolf that had just eaten its fill and wanted to have another meal.
Shen Huai pressed against her back, rubbing his chin against the crook of her neck twice, his stubble making Su Nianhe dodge.
"Shen Huai, get out of the way." Su Nianhe's voice was heavy with nasal tones, soft and lacking any intimidation.
She reached out to push away the large hand that was across her waist.
Shen Huai didn't loosen his grip; instead, he pulled the person closer to his chest.
He simply rolled over and half-laid on top of her.
"It's not fully light yet, sleep a little longer." His voice was low and hoarse from waking up early, and his rough fingertips caressed her waistline.
Su Nianhe felt weak all over from his touch, and all the soreness from yesterday's ordeal surged up.
"I'm not sleeping anymore. Today is the eighth day of the lunar month, and the clothing store is opening." She struggled to sit up and pulled the blanket up to her shoulders. "Last night you insisted on studying that lousy book until midnight. If we're late today, it'll all be your fault."
Shen Huai listened to her sweet, coquettish accusation, a smile appearing in his eyes.
He sat up, leaning against the headboard, his long legs bent under the covers, his muscular chest exposed to the cool air.
"It's not my fault," Shen Huai replied matter-of-factly. "You said you were hungry and wanted to eat meat. I just obliged."
Su Nianhe's cheeks were burning hot. She knew she couldn't win an argument with him, so she simply shut up and didn't respond.
She reached past him to grab the clothes on the bedside table.
That was a red cotton undershirt she had made a couple of days ago; the material was soft.
The moment her hand touched the clothes, Shen Huai intercepted it halfway.
"Let me help you put it on." Shen Huai took the small piece of fabric in his hand.
"I can do it myself." Su Nianhe hurriedly got out of bed and reached out to grab it.
Shen Huai raised one hand to avoid her movement, and with his other hand he put his arm around her waist and brought her in front of him.
The two were very close, their breaths mingling.
Shen Huai unfolded the light red undergarment, wrapped it around her neck, and slowly tied the thin strap behind her neck.
He had spent years working with steel machinery, and his fingers were covered in rough calluses. As he tied the ribbon, his knuckles would intentionally or unintentionally scrape against the skin on the back of her neck and spine.
Su Nianhe was ticklish and shrank back slightly.
With this movement, the two pressed even closer together.
Shen Huai slowed down his movements.
His Adam's apple bobbed twice, and he tied the belt in a slipknot.
Then, he put his hands around in front of her to tie the two thin straps around her waist.
Shen Huai stopped when his fingers touched the full edge.
"The size is too tight." His voice turned completely somber, carrying an undisguised danger. "This garment is too small."
Su Nianhe glanced down, her fair skin standing out against the red fabric.
"It wasn't made smaller, it's this size." She tried to push his hand away.
"It's tighter." Shen Huai repeated stubbornly, placing his large hand directly on it. "Let me measure to see if it's grown again."
Su Nianhe was startled; this person was utterly shameless.
"Shen Huai!" she cried out, immediately pulling out her trump card.
She grabbed his fidgeting hand and stared wide-eyed at him.
"Let me tell you, I'm now the owner of this courtyard and also the owner of the clothing store. If today's opening delays my earnings, you'll be sleeping in the east wing tonight!"
She spoke with such self-righteousness, displaying the complete greed of a money-grubber, leaving no room for negotiation whatsoever.
Shen Huai was amused by her possessiveness towards her food and money.
Looking at her flushed cheeks and defensive posture, he knew this girl valued making money above all else. If he really delayed her opening, she definitely wouldn't be able to have that "meat" dinner that night.
Shen Huai's chest trembled, and he chuckled softly.
He pulled his hand back and quickly tied the belt around her waist.
"Okay, I'll do as Boss Su says."
Shen Huai threw off the covers and stepped off the bed.
He walked shirtless to the washbasin stand, picked up the thermos, and poured half a basin of cold water.
Despite the freezing weather, he didn't even bother to add hot water; he simply soaked a towel, wrung it out, and vigorously rubbed it on his face and neck.
The cold water effectively suppressed the anger that had been stirred up in bed.
Su Nianhe sat on the bed, looking at his broad, muscular back and the lines of his muscles as the cold water slid across his back, and her heart skipped a beat.
She quickly turned her head, deftly put on a turtleneck sweater, and then put on a light camel-colored collared cotton coat, tightening the wide belt around her waist.
When she finished washing up and came to the kitchen, Shen Huai had already prepared breakfast.
The rice porridge was cooked until it was thick and sticky, served with freshly heated white steamed buns and a plate of crisp dried radish.
The two sat at the round table in the main room and ate breakfast.
Su Nianhe ate quickly, her mind preoccupied with the opening day.
"Eat slowly, no one's going to take it from you." Shen Huai broke half a steamed bun in half, picked up some dried radish, and handed it over.
"We need to hurry, we still need to take the door panel off later." Su Nianhe swallowed the porridge in her mouth.
After finishing his meal, Shen Huai cleaned up the dishes and went outside the courtyard gate.
The street-facing side of courtyard number 103 has long been renovated.
The original wall was knocked down and replaced with two large glass doors, which were then covered with thick black lacquered wooden boards.
Shen Huai rolled up his sleeves, gripped the edge of the wooden board with both hands, and lifted it up.
He gently and easily removed the heavy door panel and placed it at the base of the courtyard wall.
Sunlight shone on the clean glass door, revealing the interior layout.
The long wooden counter was polished to a shine, and neatly stacked on it were various colored spools of thread, measuring tapes, and chalk. On the shelf against the wall hung four sample garments that Su Nianhe had rushed to make a few days ago.
Two light camel-colored overcoats and two dark gray short cotton jackets. The cuts are clean and simple, without any of the bulkiness commonly seen these days.
Su Nianhe stood at the door, holding a piece of red silk cloth in her hand, and tiptoed to try to cover the sign hanging above the door.
That was a wooden plaque that Shen Huai had someone carve, with the five large characters "Huan Nian Clothing Store" written on it.
She's not tall enough; even standing on tiptoe, she can't reach it.
Shen Huai walked over, took the red silk cloth from her hand, stretched out his long arm, and easily covered the plaque.
Just as the red silk cloth was set up, a green jeep stopped at the South Bridge intersection.
He Jianjun pushed open the car door, jumped out, and went around to the other side to help Liu Hong.
Li Tiejun climbed out of the back seat, carrying a large red flower basket about half his height, with two wide red ribbons tied to it.
Following Li Tiejun off the bus was Li Lianhua, who was carrying an old canvas bag and whose face was red from the cold.
When Su Nianhe saw Li Lianhua, she quickly stepped over the threshold and ran over, grabbing her hand.
"Lotus! When did you get back?" Su Nianhe's voice was full of surprise.
Li Lianhua, with her hair in two tight braids, held her hand in her own and looked her up and down.
"I just got off the train late last night. Tie Jun picked me up." Li Lianhua looked at Su Nianhe's light camel coat and praised, "Nianhe, you look like a big boss in the city. Who in the village would have thought you would be where you are today?"
Su Nianhe blushed at the compliment and pulled her into the shop, saying, "It's cold outside, come inside quickly."
