Su Nianhe placed her hands on Shen Huai's chest, her palms filled with his slightly elevated body temperature.

"Why did you bring me to the back mountain?" Su Nianhe turned her head away, avoiding his face that was getting closer and closer.

Shen Huai placed his hand on her lower back without much force, but he managed to trap her between himself and the withered tree stump.

"There are too many people in the village, let's find a quiet place to wait for a while." Shen Huai said this as if it were the most natural thing in the village, completely unlike the serious demeanor he had when facing the old lady in the main room.

"Be serious." Su Nianhe pushed his shoulder with the back of her hand. "You acted like such an honest person in front of Grandma just now."

Shen Huai chuckled, his large hand enveloping hers and pressing her wrist against the wooden stake.

"I've always been an honest man," Shen Huai said calmly, without any emotion. "If I weren't an honest man, I would have already dragged you into the reeds under the big locust tree."

Su Nianhe's cheeks flushed red. This man was full of nonsense, yet he had such a cold and aloof face. Every word he said was more frightening than the last.

"Let go, we're outside," Su Nianhe protested softly.

"What's going on outside?" Shen Huai remained unmoved. "Grandma has already given her her approval. We're officially dating now. If you're scared, we can go back to the old house and into the main room now."

Su Nianhe immediately shut up.

Go back to the main room. The old couple were lying in the inner room, and Guihua was still killing chickens in the kitchen. It would be better to stay on the back mountain.

Seeing that she had become obedient, Shen Huai released his hand that was pressing down on her and instead pinched her cheek.

"Scared already?" Shen Huai stroked her face with his fingertips. "If you set up a stall at the factory gate in the future and encounter unreasonable customers, are you planning to just shut up and admit defeat?"

The moment the topic of setting up a street stall came up, Su Nianhe's attention was immediately drawn to it.

"That's different." Su Nianhe slapped his hand away. "Setting up a stall is about doing business; harmony brings wealth. If I encounter an unreasonable person, I simply won't sell to them."

"You've got a quick mind." Shen Huai leaned against the wooden post, arms crossed. "Let me test you. He Jianjun is going to Guangzhou tomorrow and will be back the day after. How much cargo do you plan to have him take with him?"

Su Nianhe began to carefully consider her options.

"Hairpins are lightweight and easy to carry. I plan to take fifty yuan's worth first," Su Nianhe stated the amount.

"Fifty yuan," Shen Huai helped her calculate. "Two mao each, that's two hundred and fifty. How many can you sell by yourself in a day?"

Su Nianhe hesitated for a moment.

"Ten? Or twenty?"

"Let's say twenty," Shen Huai continued, "Then it'll take you more than ten days to clear this batch of goods. If it rains or the factory closes for a holiday, your goods will be stuck in your hands. Stuck goods mean tied-up money. How many days can your little bit of capital hold you?"

Su Nianhe was stunned. She had only thought about purchasing goods and had not considered the risk of overstocking.

"Then...then should I take less? Twenty yuan?" Su Nianhe asked hesitantly.

Shen Huai didn't speak, he just looked at her.

Su Nianhe felt uneasy under his gaze and moved a few feet to the side.

"Why did you bring me to the back mountain? Was it just to test my math skills?"

"Testing your math skills was just a side effect." Shen Huai took a long stride, instantly closing the distance she had just created. "The main purpose was to see how you'll make money in the next few days."

He raised his hand and pointed to a dirt road halfway down the mountain.

Su Nianhe looked in the direction he was pointing.

That was the only main road leading out of Xiahe Village. The dirt road was overgrown with weeds on both sides, and occasionally a few oxcarts would pass by.

"Tomorrow morning, He Jianjun will pick us up in his jeep from that road." Shen Huai put down his hand. "He'll also bring the goods you ordered. I've already tidied up the new yard; you can just move in with the goods."

Su Nianhe's eyes lit up, and her enthusiasm, which had been dampened by the math problem, resurfaced.

"Really? The goods will arrive tomorrow?"

"When have I ever lied to you?" Shen Huai ruffled her hair with his large hand.

Su Nianhe was so happy she almost jumped for joy; the few dozen yuan in her pocket could finally be put to good use.

As the two were talking, a series of chaotic footsteps suddenly came from below the mountain path.

"Gousheng! Slow down! The cicada shells are all under the tree roots, why are you climbing so high!" a loud old woman shouted from below.

Su Nianhe was startled; the sound seemed to be only a dozen steps away from them.

She instinctively wanted to walk down the mountain, pretending she was just passing by.

Shen Huai reacted quickly, grabbing her arm and pulling her behind a thick old camphor tree.

The trunk of the old camphor tree was as thick as two people could hug, completely blocking their figures.

"Shh." Shen Huai lowered his head and pressed his index finger to her lips.

Su Nianhe's back was pressed against the rough tree bark, while Shen Huai's tall figure stood in front of her.

The two were so close that they could hear each other breathing clearly.

Gou Sheng was carrying a long bamboo pole. He ran around and hit the grass with the pole, making a rustling sound.

"Hey! There must be a giant cicada shell on this camphor tree!" Gou Sheng's voice grew closer and closer.

The footsteps stopped on the other side of the old camphor tree.

Su Nianhe's palms were sweaty with nervousness, and she gripped the hem of Shen Huai's white shirt tightly with both hands.

She was afraid that Gousheng would go around the tree trunk and bump right into them.

Shen Huai showed no sign of panic; he even had the leisure to lower his head and whisper in Su Nianhe's ear.

"Holding on so tightly, are you afraid others won't know we're hiding here?" Shen Huai said in a low voice, his warm breath falling on her neck.

Su Nianhe quickly let go of his hand and glared at him.

Gou Sheng circled around the tree twice, then tapped the tree trunk with his bamboo pole, making Su Nianhe's back go numb.

"There's nothing on this damn tree!" Gou Sheng complained.

"Let's go, let's go see that pine forest over there," the loud-voiced old lady urged, her footsteps gradually fading into the distance.

Only when she could no longer hear any sound did Su Nianhe let out a long breath.

She leaned limply against the tree trunk, feeling her calves cramping.

Shen Huai took half a step back, finding her terrified expression amusing.

"With such a cowardly attitude, if you set up a stall near the factory gate in the future, are you planning to just abandon the stall and run away when the urban management officers come?"

Su Nianhe recovered and retorted, "Why would I run?"

"You haven't gotten your license yet, so you're just an unlicensed vendor right now," Shen Huai bluntly exposed her.

Su Nianhe was furious and pushed him.

"Move aside, I'm going back. Aunt Guihua must have already killed the chicken."

Shen Huai didn't let her go; instead, he grabbed her wrist and pulled her back to him.

"Grandma will stew the chicken, you don't need to." Shen Huai lowered his head, his gaze falling on her rosy lips. "You haven't paid your tuition yet."

"What tuition!" Su Nianhe covered his chest with both hands. "I just calculated it correctly. You said there would be no reward for calculating it correctly."

"That's for what happened earlier," Shen Huai said matter-of-factly. "I pulled you behind the tree to keep you from being discovered by the villagers; that's called providing protection. Boss Su, don't you know that security fees are calculated separately?"

Su Nianhe laughed at his sophistry and fallacies.

"Why are you like this? You say both the right and the wrong things."

"First lesson for self-employed individuals." Shen Huai grabbed her chin firmly, leaving no room for negotiation. "The rules are set by the landlord."

After saying that, he turned his head and found her lips.

Unlike the forceful kiss in the reeds by the river, this kiss carried a teasing tone.

He lingered on her lips, occasionally pulling away slightly, only to press them back against hers again just as she was about to catch her breath.

Su Nianhe was so overwhelmed by his kisses that she could only weakly cling to his shoulders.

A mountain breeze rustled the leaves of the old camphor tree.

After a while, Shen Huai stopped what he was doing and pressed his forehead against hers.

"I'll leave after breakfast tomorrow morning." Shen Huai's voice was hoarse as he tucked her loose hair behind her ear.

Su Nianhe was panting heavily, her cheeks flushed, and she nodded obediently.

"The new house is in an alley in the residential area behind the textile factory," Shen Huai continued. "It's a detached bungalow with a small courtyard. The surrounding area is full of factory couples who are at work during the day, so it's very quiet."

Hearing that it was a detached house with its own courtyard made Su Nianhe feel much more at ease.

"So I usually live alone?"

"How many people do you want to live here?" Shen Huai raised an eyebrow.

"That's not what I meant," Su Nianhe quickly explained. "I meant, where do you usually live?"

Shen Huai looked at her, his tone indifferent.

"I work at the factory during the day and go back to the compound at night. However, there are single dormitories for technical consultants in the factory, and I sometimes stay in the dormitory."

He spoke casually, but Su Nianhe understood perfectly.

He was telling her that he could always find an excuse not to go back to the main compound and instead go to the new compound to find her.

Su Nianhe bit her lower lip and didn't respond to the conversation.
