It took Liu Huizhen quite a while to recover.
Knowing she couldn't win an argument with her youngest son, she simply resorted to emotional appeals.
"No matter how different they are, it just won't work!" Liu Huizhen's voice trembled with tears as she pointed at Shen Wanshan on the hospital bed. "Look at how sick your father is! Do you have to drive him to his death before you're satisfied? Is it so hard to get you to listen to me?!"
Shen Huai lowered his eyes and looked at Shen Wanshan's pale face.
He's a stubborn man; once he's made up his mind, nothing can change it.
But with his father lying in a hospital bed, he had no intention of adding fuel to the fire at this time.
He didn't say anything more, pulled up a chair next to him and sat down, showing no intention of leaving.
Seeing that he was silent, Liu Huizhen assumed he had given in, and her heart eased a little. She turned around and tucked the blanket around Shen Wanshan.
The ward fell silent again.
More than ten minutes later, the door was pushed open.
He Jianjun walked in carrying two aluminum insulated boxes, breaking the suffocating silence.
"Uncle, Auntie." He Jianjun placed the lunchbox on the bedside table and greeted her in a very familiar manner. "This is bone broth that the head chef of the state-run restaurant just made. I paid extra to have it simmered a little longer. It's perfect for nourishing the body."
Liu Huizhen no longer finds He Jianjun so irritating.
After all, this young man carried Shen Wanshan and ran faster than anyone else, so he deserves credit.
"Thank you for your help, Xiao He." Liu Huizhen's tone softened considerably.
He Jianjun grinned, about to speak, when a rhythmic tapping sound of a cane echoed down the corridor.
With a loud bang, the ward door was pushed open.
Old Man Shen took the lead, walking at the very front with his cane.
Old Mrs. Shen followed closely behind, with Shen Tao and Wang Liping huddled behind her.
The elderly couple had been waiting for news in the compound, but they were getting worried and insisted that Shen Tao find a car to bring them over.
The already spacious ward suddenly felt crowded with so many people flooding in.
Old Shen walked a few steps to the bedside, craned his neck to look down, and shouted in his booming voice, "Wanshan!"
Shen Tao was startled and quickly stepped forward to grab the old man's arm, lowering his voice to say, "Grandpa, this is a hospital, please keep your voice down. Dad needs to rest."
Old Shen's ears were so bad that he only heard the word "rest quietly".
He turned and glared at Shen Tao: "What? Go to a nursing home? Your dad's perfectly fine, why would you go to a nursing home! You unfilial son!"
Shen Tao was thoroughly humiliated by the scolding, waving his hands repeatedly and looking to Wang Liping for help.
Wang Liping stood in the corner, wishing she could disappear into the crack in the wall, and dared not utter a word.
Grandma Shen couldn't bear to watch any longer and slapped the old man on the back.
"Shut up!" Old Mrs. Shen yelled. "Wanshan is lying here, what are you yelling about!"
The old man was so intimidated by the old woman that he calmed down and found a chair in a corner to sit down.
Liu Huizhen opened the insulated box, and the aroma of bone broth wafted out.
She held the aluminum box and a spoon, feeding Shen Wanshan spoonful by spoonful.
Although Shen Wanshan didn't have much of an appetite, he still forced himself to drink most of the box under the watchful eyes of his family.
The ward was unusually quiet throughout the entire process.
No one spoke.
Shen Tao and Wang Liping stood like two wooden stakes at the back.
Old Shen leaned back in his chair and dozed off.
Grandma Shen placed her hands on her cane, her gaze shifting back and forth between Shen Huai and Shen Wanshan.
He Jianjun stood by the window, counting the leaves on the leaves outside to pass the time.
After Shen Wanshan finished his soup, Liu Huizhen put the lunchbox away.
Grandma Shen cleared her throat and began to give orders.
"Alright, we've checked everyone, nothing serious." Old Mrs. Shen pointed to Wang Liping in the corner, "Liping, you and Shen Tao go back first."
Wang Liping had wanted to leave for a long time; the oppressive atmosphere in the ward made her feel uncomfortable all over.
"Okay, Grandma, we'll head back now." Wang Liping agreed quickly and pulled Shen Tao out.
He Jianjun is a very perceptive person.
Judging from this situation, it was clear that the Shen family had something to say.
"Well, Grandma, Uncle, Aunt, I still have a batch of goods waiting for me to check, so I'll head out first." He Jianjun greeted them with a smile, and followed Shen Tao and the others out the door, thoughtfully closing the door behind him.
Only the elderly Shen couple, Shen Wanshan and his wife, and Shen Huai remained in the ward.
Grandma Shen walked to the bedside and looked at her son.
"Wanshan, get some sleep," Old Mrs. Shen said gently. "This huge matter can wait until your blood pressure stabilizes and you're feeling better. Don't worry about things all the time."
Shen Wanshan sighed, closed his eyes, and tacitly agreed.
Liu Huizhen also breathed a sigh of relief.
Shen Huai stood up and pushed the folding chair back to its original position.
"I'm going to make a phone call."
After saying that, he ignored Liu Huizhen's murderous glare and left the ward.
There is a public telephone at the end of the hospital corridor.
Shen Huai walked over, dropped in a coin, and dialed the number of the convenience store at the entrance of the alley in the new courtyard.
It rang several times before they finally answered.
"Hey, Uncle Zhang." Shen Huai said casually, one hand in his trouser pocket. "Could you please go to the backyard and call Su Nianhe?"
"Oh, Xiao Shen. Okay, wait a minute." Grandpa Zhang agreed readily.
About three or four minutes later, a faint sound of running came from the other end of the receiver, followed by Su Nianhe's slightly panting breath.
"Feed?" Her voice was soft and sweet, with a hint of urgency.
"Why are you running?" Shen Huai leaned against the wall. Hearing her voice, his tense nerves relaxed considerably.
"Uncle Zhang said you needed to speak to me urgently," Su Nianhe said, holding the phone receiver. "Is your dad alright?"
"I won't die," Shen Huai replied casually. "My blood pressure is stable."
Su Nianhe breathed a sigh of relief on the other end of the phone.
"It's good that you're alright. I've been checking the goods in the yard all afternoon. I have twenty yuan worth of lotus flowers, and the hair accessories all match up."
"Have you eaten?" Shen Huai asked.
"I've already eaten. I made myself a bowl of noodles." Su Nianhe's voice lowered. "Are you coming over again tonight?"
Shen Huai sensed the expectation in her tone and his lips curled up slightly.
"You want me to come over?"
Su Nianhe bit her lower lip, her face feeling a little hot.
"You said this morning you'd come over to cook after work," she retorted softly.
"My current status is that of a patient's family member, so I have to stay at the hospital with him," Shen Huai said slowly and deliberately, but then he changed the subject, "However, Boss Su lives alone in the new courtyard, so we can't delay paying the rent."
Su Nianhe tightened her grip on the receiver: "How can you rush me for rent like this? I haven't even started making money from my stall yet."
"I don't want money." Shen Huai's voice was very low, carrying a meaning that only the two of them could understand.
There was complete silence on the other end of the phone; only Su Nianhe's slightly rapid breathing could be heard.
"Lock the door tonight, I'll come over when I have time." Shen Huai said, and hung up the phone after hearing Su Nianhe's response.
Shen Huai stood in the corridor for a while, then turned and walked back to the ward.
Shen Wanshan was already asleep, and Liu Huizhen sat beside him, keeping watch.
Grandma Shen and Grandpa Shen sat on a bench.
"Have you finished the call?" Grandma Shen asked.
"Okay." Shen Huai walked over. "Grandma, I've already spoken to the nurse. I'll stay here tonight. You and Grandpa should go back to the compound to rest first."
Liu Huizhen raised her head: "I don't need you, I'll stay here and keep you company."
"You haven't had a good rest these past few days, go back." Shen Huai didn't give her a chance to object, "I'll call the doctor anytime if anything happens."
Grandma Shen stood up and pulled Grandpa Shen along.
"Huizhen, listen to Xiaohuai. You're coming back with us. Staying in a hospital for too long will make you sick, even if you're not already."
Seeing Shen Huai's resolute attitude, and considering that she was indeed dizzy from exhaustion, Liu Huizhen could only nod in agreement.
After the three people left, the ward became completely quiet.
Shen Huai sat in a folding chair, watching the sky outside the window gradually darken.
