The pushover offended a top-tier boss

Chapter 21 Who likes Old Deng?

After leaving the hospital, the group began their return journey.

In the front seat, Chen Zheng was driving, humming some song that was completely off-key. Lin Rui sat in the passenger seat, looking down at her phone, occasionally replying to a few messages. In the back seat, there were only her and Zhou Huaijin, separated by a seat, so quiet that they could hear each other breathing.

Zhou Huaijin leaned back in his chair, his eyes closed. He had taken off his coat and draped it over the seat next to him, wearing only a dark gray turtleneck sweater.

She remembered what happened on the ice yesterday. He knelt beside her, his hands trembling, his eyes red.

That was the first time she had seen this man lose his composure.

Normally, he always appears calm and collected, speaking slowly and deliberately, with an indifferent expression, as if nothing could make him even flinch.

For some reason, her heart skipped a beat when she thought of that scene.

The car was parked downstairs in her apartment building.

"Boss, I've arrived."

Zhou Huaijin didn't open his eyes, but just hummed in response.

Chen Zheng winked at her: "Sister Ye, see you tomorrow."

Ye Zhenzhen climbed to the sixth floor, pushed open the door, and the small room waited for her quietly.

I changed into slippers, washed my hands, went into the kitchen, opened the refrigerator and looked inside—there were eggs, tomatoes, a bunch of wilted greens, and a packet of instant noodles.

I don't have much of an appetite. My body still feels tired, like my bones are stuffed with cotton, limp and powerless.

She boiled water, cooked the instant noodles, added an egg and vegetables, and sat down at the coffee table with the pot. She turned on the TV and randomly put on a variety show.

She could only eat half a bowl of noodles before she couldn't eat anymore. She opened WeChat and found Zhou Huaijin's chat window.

She thought for a moment, then opened the transfer function and entered a number.

6588.

Mobile phone notification: Transfer has been sent.

She stared at the screen for a while, but the other party neither claimed the item nor replied.

The chat box was quiet, with only her message lying there all alone.

She scrolled to Meng Chen's chat window and made a video call.

It rang a few times before being answered.

"Baby, your outfit is so pretty." Meng Chen noticed her coat immediately. "Is it new? It looks like it's made of really good quality material."

Ye Zhenzhen looked down at the light purple jacket she was still wearing, hesitated for a moment, and then told him everything that had happened in the past two days.

She tried to downplay the details, omitting the thrilling parts, but Meng Chen's expression still changed little by little.

"My God, how could you—" His voice rose an octave, incredulous, "You jumped into an ice hole in this freezing weather? Are you out of your mind? You can't be so impulsive without me by your side, do you hear me?"

"Okay, I know," Ye Zhenzhen shrank her neck, "Luckily, it was a close call, and everything's fine now."

"Are you alright?" Meng Chen's expression was a mixture of anxiety and anger. "Baby, you must never be so impulsive again, do you hear me? What would I do if something happened to you?"

"Okay." Ye Zhenzhen nodded obediently.

"I was even interviewed by the media," she said, with a hint of pride in her voice. "My boss even said the company would recognize me."

Meng Chen's expression relaxed, and he smiled: "Baby, I told you that your temporary transfer was a good thing, didn't I? See, you've turned misfortune into blessing, and your future will be smoother and smoother."

"Yes," Ye Zhenzhen nodded, then added after a moment's thought, "Actually, the big boss is quite nice. When I was hospitalized, Secretary Lin said he took care of me the whole time."

"That must be because you're outstanding, and he acknowledges and likes you," Meng Chen said matter-of-factly, his tone carrying a sense of pride that "my girlfriend is amazing."

Ye Zhenzhen felt a little happy.

Being praised by someone you like, recognized by your boss, and lauded by the media.

Although today was thrilling, the ending seems to have been pretty good.

"By the way, baby," Meng Chen's voice was filled with barely concealed excitement, "I'll come find you after class tomorrow afternoon. I've been working on the schedule all day, and I'll finish the last bit tomorrow morning. It should be done in about half a day."

"Really?" Ye Zhenzhen's eyes lit up.

"Really. I'll take the subway to your workplace and pick you up right after get off work. Then, we'll spend the weekend together."

I bought you your favorite milk skin yogurt today, I'll bring it to you tomorrow.

"Really!" Ye Zhenzhen was so happy she almost jumped off the sofa. "I've missed that yogurt so much! You can't find it in the supermarkets here!"

"That's why I brought it all the way from Beijing for you." Meng Chen smiled as he watched her happy face on the screen.

The two chatted for a while, then hung up the phone.

Ye Zhenzhen lay on the sofa and chuckled foolishly.

I'm a little happy today.

Life seems to be getting better and better.

-

Chen Zheng came to pick her up as usual.

Ye Zhenzhen only remembered her wet clothes after she got into the car.

Sweaters and underwear—three grown men in a row, who ended up dealing with them?

But she was too embarrassed to ask.

They had no choice but to swallow their curiosity.

Upon arriving at his workplace, Lin Rui first went to Zhou Huaijin's office to report on his work.

Taking advantage of the fact that no one was around, Chen Zheng sneaked up to Ye Zhenzhen's desk.

"Hey, Sister Ye, can I ask you something?"

"What is it?"

What kind of guy do you like?

Ye Zhenzhen turned her head, looked him up and down, her face expressionless:

"Anyway, it's not like you."

Chen Zheng smiled through gritted teeth.

Ye Zhenzhen glanced at him:

"What's wrong, you have a crush on me?"

Chen Zheng chuckled:

"Ha, I don't have a fetish for stupidity."

Ye Zhenzhen was so angry she was about to yell at him, "Chen Zheng, are you looking for a beating?!"

"Seriously, sis," he said, his playful expression fading and his tone suddenly becoming serious, "haven't you ever thought about finding someone else? Someone older, someone richer?"

"Heh," Ye Zhenzhen rolled her eyes, "Who likes Old Deng anyway?"

Chen Zheng's heart skipped a beat.

Brother, you're out of luck.

"How long have you been dating your partner?" he asked again, his casual tone feigned, but his ears were already perked up.

"Five years," Ye Zhenzhen replied.

Chen Zheng's heart sank even further.

Damn it, they've been dating for five years, how am I supposed to steal her away, bro?

"Heh, you've been dating for so long and still haven't gotten married. I think there might be something wrong with you?" Chen Zheng persisted.

"We'll get married next year," Ye Zhenzhen said confidently. "We'll go home for the Lunar New Year to meet our parents and discuss the wedding arrangements. We'll get married after he graduates."

Chen Zheng was completely silenced.

No? Does the older brother know about this?

Even a mistress has a hard time taking over, so it's even less likely that he, the third son, will succeed.

No, he had to find a chance to remind his older brother quickly.

Ye Zhenzhen didn't notice the complex expression on Chen Zheng's face. Suddenly remembering something else, she turned her head, her eyes gleaming with gossip.

"Do you have some kind of secret relationship with the boss?"

"You noticed?" Chen Zheng laughed at her.

"Of course, I'm that clever," Ye Zhenzhen said smugly, raising her chin. "You're the only one who dares to talk back to him, so lawless, and he still fires you. What else could it be but true love?"

Chen Zheng's expression instantly turned as if he had swallowed a dead fly.

"If it's not Ye Zhenzhen, what's wrong with your brain...?"

Chen Zheng could barely speak properly.

"Are you a pig?"

"I went. So you think Zhou Huaijin likes me?"

He gave her a thumbs up.

"Amazing, you're amazing."

Ye Zhenzhen became even more curious: "So what's your relationship?"

Chen Zheng explained, somewhat speechless, "Zhou Huaijin is my elder brother's good brother."

"I was always disobedient. I wanted to drop out of school to play professional games, but my brother caught me and threw me into the army. I got into a fight in the army."

"My brother dumped me here to drive for his best friend, and it's been a test of my character."

After listening, Ye Zhenzhen remained silent for three seconds.

"So you're a relative of someone with connections."

Well, I'm the only lonely, helpless, and unlucky person in the whole world.

Ye Zhenzhen felt lonely again.
