The pushover offended a top-tier boss

Chapter 26 I Don't Want to Argue

It was almost nine o'clock when I got home.

The motion-activated light in the hallway was broken, so she climbed up to the sixth floor in the dark, took out her key, and opened the door.

The door opened and the lights were on inside.

Meng Chen sat on the sofa, the TV was on, and a ball game was in progress. Several snack boxes were on the coffee table.

He saw her come in, and there was a hint of complaint in his voice.

"You're finally back."

Ye Zhenzhen changed her shoes, put the paper bag on the ground, walked to the sofa and sat down, slumping onto the cushions: "Ugh, I'm exhausted."

"What did you eat for dinner?" Ye Zhenzhen asked him.

"I bought a lot of food at the night market, I'm already full," he couldn't help but complain. "I'd be starving by the time you got back."

"I'm sorry," she reached out and tugged at his sleeve, her tone softening, "I didn't know things would turn out like this today. My boss called me back to work overtime at the last minute, and I had no choice."

"Don't be angry anymore, okay?" Ye Zhenzhen leaned closer, resting her chin on his shoulder. "Tomorrow's the weekend, let's spend some quality time together."

Meng Chen's expression softened, and he turned to look at her, reaching out to pinch her cheek: "If you do this again, I won't come to see you."

Ye Zhenzhen quickly nodded and raised three fingers to swear, "Okay, okay, next time I go to Beijing to find you, I won't let you make a wasted trip."

Meng Chen then smiled and held out the small boxes to her: "Are you starving? I saved you quite a few."

Ye Zhenzhen looked down and saw that the grilled cold noodles had solidified into a lump, the oil from the fried skewers had seeped into the paper bag, and the noodles were soft and limp, making them look unappetizing.

She had already eaten her fill at Zhou Huaijin's house.

"No need, the boss provides meals when I work overtime."

A warm current surged from my lower abdomen.

She stood up and walked towards the bedroom.

I pulled out a pack of sanitary napkins from the cabinet, ready to go to the bathroom to change.

Meng Chen followed her over, leaned against the doorframe, and when he saw what she was holding, his expression changed slightly: "Are you on your period?"

"Hmm." Ye Zhenzhen didn't look at him, and instead looked down to unpack the sanitary napkins.

"Why didn't you tell me you were having your period earlier?" Meng Chen's tone was tinged with displeasure and annoyance.

Ye Zhenzhen's hand paused for a moment.

Suddenly, those words stung me.

She turned her head and looked at Meng Chen.

"Meng Chen, what do you mean?"

"If I'd told you in advance, you wouldn't have come, right? You came all this way just to sleep with me, isn't that it?"

Meng Chen was taken aback, seemingly not expecting her to say that.

"That's not what I meant," he quickly explained, his tone softening as he walked over and put his arm around her shoulder. "Of course I came because I missed you. But we haven't seen each other for so long, isn't it normal to want to be intimate with you?"

"Baby, I came here today. I've been waiting for you for so long, I've been looking forward to it for days. It's just that my wish was suddenly dashed, so I'm a little disappointed."

Ye Zhenzhen stood there, clutching the sanitary napkin in her hand.

"I'm going to take a shower." She didn't answer him, turned around and went into the bathroom, closing the door behind her.

The water from the showerhead poured down.

She stood underwater, her mind replaying his words over and over.

She was angry.

Although she knew that working overtime made him unhappy, she didn't mean it.

He didn't care about her health, didn't ask if her stomach still hurt, or if she was tired from working overtime today.

He only cared that she was on her period and couldn't do anything.

After taking a shower, Meng Chen lay down on the bed.

"Don't be angry," he said, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind to comfort her. "That's not what I meant."

Ye Zhenzhen kept her eyes closed and didn't move.

"Go to sleep," she said, her voice muffled.

She was too tired to argue.

Besides, it wasn't a matter of principle, so she was too lazy to argue.

The next day was Saturday.

They both slept until almost ten o'clock.

No one brought up the unpleasantness of yesterday again.

Ye Zhenzhen sat up, stretched, and got out of bed.

When she finished washing up and came out, Meng Chen also woke up and was leaning against the headboard looking at his phone.

"Where are we going today?" he asked.

Ye Zhenzhen thought for a moment: "How about we go see that museum first? Didn't you say you wanted to see the bronze exhibition last time? Then we can have boiled fish for lunch at that restaurant, the one where we had to wait in a long line last time but didn't get to eat there."

Meng Chen nodded: "Okay, I'll do as you say."

Her stomach doesn't hurt today. She's been eating bland food these past few days and just wants something spicy and flavorful.

The two of them changed their clothes and were about to go out.

Meng Chen's phone rang.

He answered the phone, listened for a few seconds, and his expression changed.

"Okay, okay, teacher, don't worry, I'll take a look right away... Um, I'm in Bin City... Okay, I'll handle it immediately."

He hung up the phone and looked at Ye Zhenzhen with a troubled expression.

"Honey, there's a problem with the data. My supervisor needs it urgently and wants me to fix it right away. I'm afraid I can't—"

Ye Zhenzhen looked at him, and the smile on her face gradually faded.

"Alright, go ahead then."

"I'll definitely make it up to you next time," Meng Chen walked over, cupped her face in his hands, kissed her forehead, and said apologetically, "This time it was just bad luck for us, sigh..."

"Okay, you go ahead and do your work. Your studies are the most important thing." Ye Zhenzhen nodded and gave a smile.

Meng Chen kissed her again, picked up his bag, and hurriedly left.

That's good, it evens out.

Ye Zhenzhen suddenly felt that it was a bit boring.

The door closed, and the room suddenly became quiet.

She stood there, staring at the closed door, lost in thought for a long time.

She walked to the window and looked down. Meng Chen came out of the building entrance, looking down at his phone, and hurried towards the subway station.

His figure grew smaller and smaller in the crowd.

She leaned against the window frame, gazing in that direction, and remained motionless for a long time.

The planned weekend is ruined.

What's the point of going out alone?

Anyway, she's tired; this week has been exhausting, so she might as well just stay home and rest.

She went to the market and bought some groceries, then filled the refrigerator. She also thoroughly cleaned the house, mopping, wiping windows, and washing sheets, keeping busy all afternoon. She worked up a sweat, which temporarily suppressed all those chaotic thoughts.

The next day, Sunday, she slept in until she naturally woke up. She didn't want to get out of bed, so she stayed snuggled in bed playing on her phone, playing two games and scrolling through short videos for a while.

Time passed quickly, so quickly that she felt a little dazed.

The weekend is over just like that.
