Sent to the countryside, I turned the health center into a top-tier hospital.
Chapter 139 The Girl
"I just glanced at it casually, and when people come to me, I can't very well refuse." Chen Ping smiled and put the chess set away.
Just as Chen Ping finished speaking, the door was pushed open, and a young woman walked in, carrying a thick brown paper bag containing films.
She walked up to Chen Ping with a big smile, handed him the paper bag, and said, "Dr. Chen, could you please take a look at my knee? It's been hurting for six months."
Chen Ping took the film, pulled it out, looked at it in the light from the window for a while, and explained it to her. The young woman nodded after listening and said she wanted to go to the Siping Township Health Center.
Chen Ping saw seven patients that afternoon.
Some heard about him in the corridor, some were introduced by other patients, and one young nurse from the nurses' station secretly ran over and asked, "Director Chen, can you treat my mother's high blood pressure?"
Chen Ping examined each patient one by one and explained each one's condition. He could explain the cause of some illnesses on the spot, while others required examinations, and he explained everything clearly.
As they left, everyone said the same thing: "Dr. Chen, I'll come to Siping Township to find you."
Cui Ying's father leaned against the bed, watching people come and go, his admiration for Chen Ping growing stronger.
He used to think that a good man had to be rich and have a career, so he always wanted to find Cui Ying an entrepreneur boyfriend.
But now, after spending the last few days with Chen Ping, his definition of a good man is changing more and more.
At this moment, in his eyes, Chen Ping was actually a good man.
It was getting dark, and the corridor finally became quiet.
When Cui Ying brought the food, before she even put down the insulated bag, she saw a pile of fruit on the bedside table.
There were apples, oranges, bananas, and a carton of milk, tucked under the bed with only a corner peeking out.
She asked, "Who sent it?" Chen Ping didn't look up and said, "The patient sent it."
Cui Ying glanced at her father, who smiled at her and then looked towards Chen Ping.
"These are all for Dr. Chen..." Cui Ying's father said softly.
Cui Ying looked puzzled, not understanding why the patient was giving Chen Ping a gift.
Cui Ying's father beckoned her over, then leaned close to her ear and whispered about what had happened that day.
"Daughter, Chen Ping is a good man, Dad supports you..." Cui Ying's father gently patted Cui Ying's shoulder.
Cui Ying blushed instantly, but smiled happily. After all, with her father's support, she no longer had to worry about her family's endless pressure to get married.
After dinner, Cui Ying put away the insulated bag, zipped it up, and placed it on the bedside table.
She glanced at Chen Ping, said nothing, and then looked out the window.
It was completely dark, but the streetlights were on in the courtyard downstairs, and the leaves of the sycamore trees looked yellow under the lights.
She stood up, put on her coat, and zipped it up.
"Chen Ping, come with me downstairs for a walk."
It wasn't a discussion; it was more like an order.
Chen Ping was taking out the chess set, intending to play a couple of games, when he paused and glanced at Cui Ying's father.
Cui Ying's father leaned against the bed, holding his phone up. The light from the screen shone on his face, and his lips twitched slightly, whether he was smiling or chatting with someone was unclear.
He didn't look at Chen Ping, but casually said, "Go ahead, I can manage on my own."
Chen Ping put the chess box back, stood up, and picked up his coat draped over the back of the chair.
The two left the ward, and the lights in the corridor were on, blindingly white.
The young nurse at the station was writing nursing records with her head down. When she heard footsteps, she looked up, glanced at the record, and then looked down again.
The elevator doors opened, but there was no one inside.
Cui Ying pressed the button for the first floor, and the elevator went down. The floor numbers flashed red above the buttons.
Stepping out of the hospital building, a night breeze blew in, much cooler than during the day.
Cui Ying zipped her coat all the way up and put her hands in her pockets.
Chen Ping walked beside her, and the two of them left the hospital and walked south along the sidewalk.
The streetlights were scattered about, one every few steps, casting a dim, yellowish glow that made the two people's shadows appear longer and shorter.
There weren't many cars on the street. Occasionally, one would pass by, its headlights shining from a distance, leaving a white trail on the road before dimming again.
Neither of them spoke; they just walked on, at a moderate pace, as if they had planned it together.
Cui Ying spoke first, "My dad told me today that you are a good man."
Chen Ping did not respond.
"He said he supports me," Cui Ying said softly, as if talking to herself. "He also said he wouldn't force me to go on blind dates anymore."
Chen Ping still didn't respond.
He looked at the road ahead, the streetlights casting a soft glow on the asphalt.
Chen Ping didn't know what to say.
Cui Ying turned her head and glanced at him. His profile was clearly defined by the light and shadow under the streetlight. The scar on his head had fallen off, leaving a light pink mark.
She looked away and continued walking forward.
When they reached a large bridge, Cui Ying stopped.
The bridge is not long, with sidewalks on both sides. The railings are made of iron and painted dark green, but in some places the paint has peeled off, revealing the rust underneath.
The river under the bridge was not wide, and the water was dark and murky, with no sign of movement. Only the light from the streetlights shimmered on the surface of the water, creating ripples.
A person was standing in the middle of the bridge.
They were wearing school uniforms, dark blue with white lettering printed on the back, though it was impossible to read what it said.
Her hair was loose, blowing wildly in the night wind, but she ignored it and just stood there, her hands on the railing, facing the river, motionless.
He was short and thin, and his school uniform was too big, making him look like he was wearing a sack.
Cui Ying slowed her pace, and the expression on her face changed.
She looked at the girl, then at Chen Ping, opened her mouth slightly, as if to say something.
Chen Ping put his finger to his lips, preventing her from making a sound.
He slowed his pace, taking very slow and light steps, his shoes making almost no sound as they touched the ground.
Cui Ying stood there, not daring to move, even suppressing her breathing.
Chen Ping walked up behind the girl, reached out, grabbed her waist, and pulled her back from the railing.
The girl's body was very light, as light as a piece of firewood. When he pulled her, she fell backward and bumped into his chest.
She froze for a moment, then began to struggle, kicking her arms and legs wildly, shouting, "Let me go, let me go!"
Chen Ping didn't let go; he dragged her to a safe area in the middle of the bridge before releasing her.
The girl squatted on the ground, hugged her knees, and started crying.
It wasn't a loud wail, but a suppressed sob, with the face buried in the knees, the shoulders trembling, the school uniform gleaming faintly blue under the light.
Cui Ying ran over, squatted down next to her, and reached out to touch her head, but pulled her hand back halfway, afraid of scaring her.
"Little sister, what's wrong?" Cui Ying's voice was very soft, as if she was afraid of breaking something.
The girl didn't speak; she was still crying.
"What happened? Tell your sister," Cui Ying continued to ask.
The girl looked up, her face covered in tears, her eyes and nose red, and her lips trembling.
She glanced at Cui Ying, then at Chen Ping, her voice hoarse, clearly indicating she had been crying.
"I'm not mentally ill. I'm a normal person. I don't want to be sent to a mental hospital."
The girl said, crying.
Cui Ying paused for a moment, then turned to look at Chen Ping.
Chen Ping squatted down to be at eye level with the girl, looked at her for two seconds, and asked, "Who said you were mentally ill?"
Before the girl could speak, the sound of brakes came from afar.
Immediately afterwards, a middle-aged woman and a man got out of the car and ran quickly toward Chen Ping and the others.
The man was in his forties, wearing a dark suit, and holding a cell phone in his hand.
The woman, panting heavily, her heels clattering on the ground, reached the girl and grabbed her arm.
"What are you doing here? You scared me to death!" The woman's voice was urgent and shrill, her eyes red, it was hard to tell whether she was angry or scared.
