The group sat down at the table. Cui Ying served food to Chen Ping. When Cui Ying's parents saw this, they no longer showed any expression; they were already used to it!
After dinner, Cui Ying suggested going to the night market, and Chen Ping did not refuse.
The two of them drove straight to the night market.
The car turned out of Cui Ying's villa area and onto the main road.
Chen Ping sat in the passenger seat, and Cui Ying drove.
The night breeze slipped in through the cracks in the car window, cool and refreshing, making one feel awake.
"A new night market opened on that street up ahead. They have barbecue skewers, spicy hot pot, and little trinkets." Cui Ying glanced at Chen Ping. "Didn't you say you wanted barbecue skewers?"
Chen Ping hummed in response, but said nothing more.
He leaned back in his chair, looking out the window.
The streetlights passed overhead one by one, casting alternating light and shadow on my face.
He wasn't thinking about the barbecue skewers. Cui Ying didn't say anything more either.
The car stopped at an intersection waiting for the red light.
Chen Ping's gaze swept aimlessly across the shops lining the street, one after another, selling mobile phones, fruits, and braised dishes.
Then he saw a restaurant. It wasn't very big, but the decor was quite nice. Several men in suits were standing at the entrance, shaking hands and saying goodbye.
One of them was on the heavier side, his belly stretched his shirt tight, and his hair was combed back and slicked back.
Standing next to him was a man wearing a light gray trench coat, with his hair disheveled. He was unsteady on his feet, leaning to one side, and was being supported by the fat man.
The person had their head down, their face obscured by their hair, making it difficult to see clearly.
But Chen Ping recognized the trench coat.
It was light gray, with a square metal buckle on the belt that reflected the light under the streetlights.
He recognized the trench coat; it was a birthday gift he gave Su Meng a couple of years ago.
However, Su Meng has been wearing this trench coat in her walk-in closet for two years because she says she doesn't really like the color.
But now, Su Meng is actually wearing that trench coat that she doesn't really like.
The green light is on.
The car behind honked its horn.
Cui Ying didn't move. She followed Chen Ping's gaze and saw Su Meng as well.
Without asking, she pulled the car over to the side of the road, parked it under a sycamore tree, and turned off the engine.
Chen Ping didn't move.
He sat in the passenger seat, his hands on his knees, clenched into fists.
He watched as the fat man helped Su Meng into a black minivan. The door closed, the headlights came on, and the car merged into traffic, heading north.
"Just tell me if you want to catch up."
Cui Ying's voice was soft, without any displeasure or probing; it was just a very ordinary tone.
Chen Ping remained silent.
"You're worried about her."
Cui Ying continued, "Then let's go take a look, just one glance, and if nothing's wrong, we'll leave."
Chen Ping remained silent.
He stared at the direction the car had disappeared in for several seconds before speaking, his voice a little dry.
"We're already divorced. Her private life is none of my business. Who she eats with, who she drinks with, who she drives... it's none of my concern."
He pursed his lips after saying that.
Cui Ying turned her head to look at him.
The light from the streetlights shone through the car window, illuminating his face, making one side bright and the other dark.
Chen Ping's expression was very calm, as calm as a still pond, but the hand he was clenching into a fist was trembling slightly.
It was obvious that although Chen Ping said he couldn't interfere, he was actually worried.
Cui Ying didn't ask any more questions.
She started the car, turned on the turn signal, merged into the traffic, and followed the direction of the black minivan, driving at a leisurely pace.
The two cars were spaced two or three parking spaces apart, neither too close nor too far, and I followed them for about ten minutes.
The van turned onto a side street, at the end of which was a hotel. The entrance was small, but the lights were bright, and uniformed concierges stood at the door.
The van was parked under the porch. The fat man got out first, straightened his suit jacket, went around to the other side, and helped Su Meng out.
Su Meng was practically clinging to him, her head tilted to the side, her steps unsteady, her heels tapping the ground several times, barely able to stand.
The fat man put his arm around her waist and held her arm with one hand, leading her into the hotel lobby.
The concierge at the entrance opened the glass door, and the two people went inside.
Chen Ping pushed open the car door and got out.
He walked very fast, taking long strides, and reached the hotel entrance in just a few steps.
The glass door wasn't closed yet, so he squeezed in sideways. The lobby lights were so bright they hurt his eyes.
Two young women in uniforms were standing at the front desk, typing away. The fat man and Su Meng were no longer on the first floor.
The elevator doors were closed, the floor indicator light flashed, and it stopped on the third floor.
Chen Ping walked to the front desk, leaned on the counter, and spoke in a low voice, but every word was urgent.
"Hello, those two people who just went in, the man was overweight, and the woman was wearing a gray trench coat, which room did they stay in?"
Chen Ping asked.
The young woman at the front desk looked up at him and said, "Sir, I'm sorry, we can't disclose guests' information casually; it's the policy."
Chen Ping slapped the tabletop hard, the marble surface making a dull thud.
The little girl's expression froze for a few seconds, then returned to normal.
The little girl next to me had already put her hand under the phone, probably checking to see where the security guard was.
Cui Ying came up from behind and tugged at Chen Ping's sleeve.
She calmly took out her phone from her pocket, scrolled through her contacts, and dialed a number.
It rang three times, then I answered.
Without any pleasantries, she directly gave the hotel's name and address, then said, "Find the hotel manager for me; I need to know the room number."
After hanging up the phone, she put it in her pocket, stood next to the front desk, and waited without urging or saying anything.
Less than five minutes later, a middle-aged man in a dark suit came out of the elevator. He walked quickly, his tie fluttering in front of his chest.
He glanced at Cui Ying, then at Chen Ping, his expression shifting from confusion to one of recognition.
He didn't ask Cui Ying's name, but whispered, "303." After saying that, the manager left quickly.
The manager knew that leaking customer privacy was wrong, so he walked very fast and disappeared from sight in just a few steps.
"Let's go..." Cui Ying smiled and looked at Chen Ping.
Chen Ping was stunned for a moment; he hadn't expected Cui Ying to have such abilities.
Chen Ping followed Cui Ying to the elevator, then entered and pressed the button for the third floor.
The elevator doors opened, revealing a dark carpet on the third-floor corridor that made no sound when stepped on.
The corridor was long and brightly lit. The doors on both sides were closed, with the room numbers lit up above the door frames in black letters on a white background, one after another, like they were printed by a photocopy.
Chen Ping and Cui Ying found room 303 at the end of the corridor, but the door was closed and they couldn't get in.
Cui Ying stood at the door and raised her hand to knock.
"Hello, room service," Cui Ying said in a slightly high-pitched voice.
There was no sound inside.
After about ten seconds, Cui Ying knocked twice more.
"Hello, I'm delivering fruit."
