He stood up, walked to the window, and pushed it open halfway. Sunlight streamed in, illuminating the room.

He turned around, pointed to the window, and raised his voice a few decibels, "Gentlemen, our health center is hiring security guards. The requirements are that they can work night shifts, patrol, and handle emergencies."

"Security guards need to be physically fit and mentally sharp. Here's the deal: whoever can climb out of this window and back in, I'll continue the discussion."

The old men looked at each other in bewilderment.

The white-haired old man stood up, walked to the window, peered at the height of the windowsill, and then examined the width of the window frame before silently sitting back down.

The old man with the missing front tooth confidently stood up with his cane, took two steps, then stopped and turned back to ask, "If I fell while climbing out of the window, is that considered a work injury?"

The person who was dozing off was woken up by the person next to him. Hearing that he had to climb out the window, he quickly took off his hearing aid, placed it on the bench, and waved his hand, saying, "I can't hear, don't ask me."

The white-haired old man stood up again, leaning on his cane, and walked to Chen Ping.

He tapped the end of his cane on the floor, raising his voice by half an octave. "Hey young man," he said, "being a security guard is just about watching the door, right? I've been taking care of my grandson at home for years, and I've kept a good watch on the door. My grandson has never gotten lost."

"Isn't being a security guard just about opening and closing doors? I can open and close doors, why would I need to climb through a window? Aren't you making things difficult for me?"

"Bring your Dean Zhao here! Zhao Guosheng is my nephew! I even held him when he was a child, and he peed all over me! I don't believe he'd dare abandon me!"

Upon hearing this, the other old men also urged that Zhao Guosheng be called over.

To be honest, these old men are all related to Zhao Guosheng. They just felt they were getting old and came to the health center to retire and make some money on the side.

Chen Ping leaned against the windowsill, his hands in the pockets of his white coat, waiting for them to finish speaking.

Then he lowered his voice and said, slowly and deliberately, "Sir, Dean Zhao isn't here today. I'm the one who decides on hiring security guards. Going to Dean Zhao won't help you."

The white-haired old man paused for a moment, then glared at Chen Ping fiercely. "Fine, then I'll come back when Zhao Guosheng is here. I don't believe he can do without his third uncle."

The white-haired old man has passed away.

"Please take care." Chen Ping said helplessly, and went forward to help the white-haired old man, hoping he wouldn't fall.

The remaining old men looked at each other, then stood up one after another, carrying their hearing aids, cloth bags, and half-empty bottles of water, and trudged out.

The old man with the missing front tooth walked to the door, turned around, and said to Chen Ping, "Young man, I'll have Guosheng's third aunt call when I get back. Let's see if you still dare to reject me then."

"Okay, I'll be waiting." Chen Ping said with a smile.

Only after the old men left did Zhao Guosheng dare to come out of his office. Looking at the departing old men, he let out a long sigh of relief.

"They're finally gone. I couldn't bear it anymore, with both my third uncle and my uncle-in-law around..."

"Dean Zhao, don't relax yet. You left a message before you left, and someone will probably call you later, and might even scold you," Chen Ping said with a smile.

"Let them scold us, it won't hurt us. Anyway, we can't let these old men work as security guards, it would ruin the image of our health center." Zhao Guosheng didn't care.

"Dean, regarding hiring a security guard, I think there's someone quite suitable."

"Who?" Zhao Guosheng asked.

"Liu Mazi, this guy is famous in Siping Township. If he works as a security guard at the health center, no one will dare to cause trouble. Besides, Liu Mazi has changed for the better now, and he is filial. Giving him a job is a way of saving him," Chen Ping said.

"Okay, you decide on this!" Zhao Guosheng nodded.

Chen Ping took out his cell phone from his white coat pocket, found Liu Mazi's number, and dialed it.

I answered after it rang twice. The background noise on Liu Mazi's end was very loud, like it was on the street, with the sound of motorcycles sputtering and music playing from someone's house.

"Dr. Chen? Why did you suddenly decide to call me?" Liu Mazi's voice was filled with surprise, but even more so with joy.

"I have something to ask you. The health center is hiring security guards. Would you like to do it? It's a legitimate job with a salary and social security."

There was a two-second silence on the other end of the phone, then Liu Mazi's voice suddenly rose half an octave, his throat cracking with excitement, "Do it! Do it! Do it! Dr. Chen, wait for me, I'll be right there!"

Less than twenty minutes later, the roar of motorcycles could be heard at the entrance of the health center.

Liu Mazi parked his bike by the flower bed, and without even taking off his helmet, he rushed into the yard, his pockmarked face contorted into a wide grin.

Chen Ping waited for him in the corridor, led him into the consultation room, explained the security guard's job duties, working hours, and salary, and finally gave him a few important instructions.

"The health center isn't like the casinos of the past. If you're here as a security guard, you have to act like one."

"First, drinking alcohol is not allowed while at work, and smoking is prohibited in the consultation room or other rooms."

"Second, you must not be domineering towards patients and their families."

"Third, since you've become a security guard, you have to follow the rules and can't hang out with the same group of people as before. If you can do that, then come; if not, I won't force you."

Liu Mazi stood ramrod straight, pounding his chest loudly. "Dr. Chen, don't worry, I, Liu Mazi, keep my word. I used to be a scoundrel, but now that you've given me this job, if I don't do it well, I'll be letting down my mother, and even more so, you."

"From now on, if anyone causes trouble at the health center, I'll be the first to stop them; you won't need to lift a finger."

Chen Ping nodded. "One of you isn't enough. We need at least three: two for the day shift and one for the night shift. See if you know anyone suitable and reliable. Bring them over so I can take a look."

Liu Mazi thought for a moment, then took out his phone and scrolled through his contacts. "There are two young brothers who used to hang out with me. They're not very old, and they've long since given up on messing around in society. They just haven't been able to find any decent work. I brought them over for you to take a look. If they're useful, great; if not, I won't say a word."

Around 2 PM, Liu Mazi arrived with two other people.

One of them was named Ma Zhihao, twenty-one or twenty-two years old, tall and thin, with dark skin. He didn't talk much and stood next to Liu Mazi with his hands hanging down properly.

The other one was called Fatty Zhang. He wasn't actually fat, just had a round face and looked honest. When he smiled, his eyes narrowed into slits.

Chen Ping asked a few questions. Neither of them had committed any major crimes before. They had just followed Liu Mazi around for a while. Later, Liu Mazi stopped following him, so they parted ways and each stayed home to help their parents farm.

Chen Ping nodded and appointed Liu Mazi as the security captain. The three of them were assigned shifts and started working that day.

When Liu Mazi was leaving get off work in the evening, he stood in the guard room at the gate of the courtyard, his back straight. When he saw Chen Ping come out of the corridor, he quickly went to greet him, his expression even happier than during the New Year.

"Dr. Chen, it's my treat tonight at Old Zhou's Restaurant. You absolutely have to come. Without you, I, Liu Mazi, don't know where I'd be squatting right now, let alone being a security captain." He said, reaching out to grab Chen Ping's arm.
