Liu Wei returned to the consultation room, Wang Tao went to the door to greet patients, Li Fang retreated to the pharmacy, and Wang Jianguo went back to his own place with his hands behind his back.

Zhao Guosheng stood at the office door, looking at Chen Ping, wanting to say something, but after opening his mouth, he only nodded.

Chen Ping turned and went back to his consultation room.

The patients continued to see doctors in the afternoon.

At 4:30, the last patient left. Chen Ping stood up and stretched his neck. His fingers were very sore and his wrists were a little stiff.

He walked to the door and looked at the empty courtyard, with locust tree leaves scattered all over the ground by the wind.

Cui Ying came out of the accounting office, holding a folder in her hand, and walked to his side: "I heard that Liu Wei and Dean Zhao had a fight this afternoon?"

"Yes, about salary."

"Anyone would be anxious if it hadn't been paid out for three months."

Cui Ying sighed. "My salary is paid on time; it's directly allocated from above. The others' salaries depend entirely on the health center's own earnings. Dr. Chen, your salary is also uncertain. Has Director Zhao said when it will be paid?"

"He didn't say." Chen Ping smiled. "Anyway, I don't really have any places to spend money."

Cui Ying glanced at him but didn't say anything.

The two were standing there when Zhao Guosheng suddenly ran out of the office, his face ashen, and he didn't even bother to pick up the jar he was holding.

"Dr. Chen! Something's happened!"

His voice had changed. "The township government just called and said a minibus overturned off the mountain road leading out of Siping Township! Many people are injured, and the township government wants us to go to the scene immediately!"

Everyone in the courtyard heard it and gathered around.

"How many people were injured exactly?" Chen Ping asked.

"The township government officials said there were about a dozen people on the bus, but they don't know the exact number of injuries yet. However, they heard that some people were seriously injured!"

Zhao Guosheng's voice trembled, "The ambulances from the county hospital and the city hospital have already set off, but the mountain roads are difficult to travel, so they'll arrive later than us. We're the closest, we have to go first!"

Chen Ping's mind raced for a moment.

He had taken the bus once to the mountain road leading out of Siping Township. It was winding and narrow, with a mountain wall on one side and a cliff on the other. He didn't want to think about the consequences if the minibus overturned.

"Don't just stand there!"

He turned around, his voice much louder, "Wang Jianguo, bring all the first aid medicines you can, including hemostatics, bandages, and painkillers!"

Li Fang, take stock of the pharmacy's supplies: gauze, bandages, iodine, splints, and load them all into the car!

Liu Wei, go get the stretcher, and bring the sheets from the examination bed too! Wang Tao, bring all the acupuncture needles; if one pack isn't enough, get two!

The group paused for a moment, then all started moving.

Wang Jianguo ran back to the clinic to rummage through the cabinets, Li Fang shouted in the pharmacy, "Where's the gauze?" Liu Wei rushed into the injection room to carry a stretcher, Wang Tao ran back to the clinic to get silver needles, and even Cui Ying ran to help move things.

Chen Ping turned around and went back into the consultation room, picking up the wooden box on the table.

He glanced at it, hesitated for a second, and then put it on.

Zhao Guosheng, his voice trembling, was on the phone beside him: "Yes, yes, we're leaving right away... The car? Where's the car?... Okay, okay, we'll wait at the gate!"

He hung up the phone and shouted to Chen Ping, "The township government has sent a car; it'll be there soon!"

In less than ten minutes, everyone was ready.

Wang Jianguo was carrying two large plastic bags, which were full of medicines and gauze.

Liu Wei carried the stretcher, while Wang Tao carried a canvas bag filled with silver needles and disinfectant supplies.

Li Fang was carrying a bundle of bandages, while Cui Ying was carrying two bottles of saline solution.

A gray van pulled up and stopped in front of the health center.

The driver leaned out and called out, "Dean Zhao, get in! Quickly!"

Several people squeezed onto the bread cart.

Chen Ping sat in the passenger seat, holding the wooden box in his arms.

Zhao Guosheng, Wang Jianguo, Liu Wei, Wang Tao, and Li Fang were squeezed in behind them, and Cui Ying came up last, so the door could barely be closed.

The bread truck started up and sped off with a whoosh.

"How far?" Chen Ping asked the driver.

"It's about ten miles, a twenty-minute drive."

"Hurry up."

The driver stepped on the gas, and the bread truck roared forward.

After leaving the main street of Siping Township, we turned onto a dirt road, which was so bumpy that our buttocks were lifted off the seats.

The road was flanked by mountains, the trees so dense that the sky was obscured. As dusk fell, the forest was already pitch black, even though it was only a little past five o'clock.

Chen Ping held the wooden box, his mind racing.

The most feared injuries from rollover accidents are massive bleeding and spinal cord injury.

The bleeding was unstoppable, and he died within minutes.

If a spinal cord injury is not handled properly, it can lead to lifelong paralysis.

He first needs to determine who is in the most danger, who can wait, and who must be dealt with immediately.

The atmosphere in the car was heavy; no one spoke.

Zhao Guosheng sat in the back row, gripping the back of the seat in front of him, his forehead covered in sweat.

Wang Jianguo had his eyes closed, his lips moving, and it was unclear what he was muttering.

Li Fang was holding a bundle of bandages, her face pale. Wang Tao held the silver needle kit in his arms like it was a precious treasure.

Twenty minutes later, the bread truck stopped.

"We're here!" the driver called out.

Chen Ping pushed open the door and jumped down. What came into view was a mountain road with sharp bends. A section of the guardrail was broken off and hung crookedly outside.

Below the road is a slope, not deep, about four or five meters, but very steep, covered with shrubs and weeds.

A minibus overturned at the bottom of a slope, its body twisted and its windows shattered, glittering in the setting sun.

Zhang Jianmin, the deputy secretary of the township government, has arrived and is organizing the police station and some villagers to rescue people.

Upon seeing Chen Ping and the others arrive, Zhang Jianmin immediately went to greet them.

"Dean Zhao, you've finally arrived. There are many injured people down there. There are no doctors here, and we dare not move them."

Zhang Jianmin said anxiously.

"Secretary Zhang, don't worry, we'll go down and check the situation right away..."

After Zhao Guosheng finished speaking, he looked at Chen Ping and the others and said, "Come on, all of you, get down here. Watch your step..."

Chen Ping and the others followed Zhao Guosheng and slowly slid down the slope.

As soon as I got down there, I heard people shouting and crying; it was a complete mess.

A middle-aged man crawled out from under the car, his face covered in blood and his clothes torn. He staggered toward them, shouting "Help!"

"Don't run around!" Chen Ping shouted at him. "Sit down and don't move!"

The man paused for a moment, then plopped down on the ground.

Chen Ping glanced at him and then asked Li Fang to bandage him. He could tell at a glance that although the man's face was covered in blood, his injuries were not serious; they were just superficial wounds.

Ignoring the man, Chen Ping rushed to the vicinity of the minibus.

The minibus overturned on the embankment, its front end hitting a large rock and denting it badly.

There were four or five people lying next to the car; some were shouting, some were humming, and some were not moving.

There were still people in the car, and you could hear someone crying and shouting inside.

"Wang Jianguo! First, categorize the people outside!"

Chen Ping shouted, "Let those who can move walk up there themselves, and don't move those who can't! Liu Wei, set up the stretcher! Wang Tao, come with me!"
