After lunch, everyone rested briefly in the clinic.

When Wang Tao went to work in the afternoon, he was as energetic as if he had been injected with chicken blood, running around and handing out needles and medicine twice as fast as usual.

He would call the next patient after seeing one, without even taking a breath in between.

Liu Wei would visit Chen Ping's clinic every few days, ostensibly to ask for prescriptions, but actually to whisper with Wang Tao about what would happen that evening.

The two huddled together, heads close together, their voices low, their expressions a mixture of excitement and nervousness, like two teenagers about to steal melons.

Chen Ping sat in the chair, looking at the two of them acting like that, wanting to laugh but holding it in.

He picked up his mug and took a sip of water. The water was lukewarm; Cui Ying had just poured it at noon.

He put down his cup and continued looking at the medical records, his face expressionless, as if what happened that night had nothing to do with him.

Cui Ying came out of the accounting office, passed the door of the clinic, and glanced inside.

Wang Tao was whispering something in Chen Ping's ear, gesturing wildly.

She stood there for two seconds, didn't go in, turned around and went to the pharmacy, said a few words to Li Fang in a very low voice. Li Fang blushed when she heard this and spat at her.

When I got off work in the evening, Aunt Li was simmering chicken soup again.

This time, I stewed the leftover chicken from lunch, making a huge pot full of mushrooms. The soup was so thick it clung to the spoon.

The aroma wafted from the backyard, and Wang Tao smelled it in the clinic. His stomach growled, and after seeing off the last patient, he locked the door and ran to the cafeteria.

Fang Hai didn't come again.

When Zhao Guosheng knocked on the door with the tray, the door opened a crack, a hand reached out and took the tray, and the door closed without even a thank you.

Wang Tao squatted at the entrance of the cafeteria watching this scene, spat, and cursed, "What the hell?" He was glared at by Li Fang and fell silent.

The pot of chicken soup was eaten clean, not even a drop of broth was left.

Wang Jianguo wiped his mouth, stood up, looked at the sky outside the window, then at Zhao Guosheng, said "I'm going back now," and walked away with his hands behind his back.

He walked slowly, stopped at the gate of the courtyard, looked back, shook his head, and walked away.

Although what happened at night was exciting, he didn't want to participate at his age!

Zhao Guosheng stood in the courtyard and looked in the direction of Fang Hai's dormitory in the backyard.

He looked away, then at Wang Tao, Liu Wei, Li Fang, Chen Ping, and Cui Ying, and said in a low voice, "Keep it down, don't hit anyone, don't cause any big trouble. That's enough."

After saying that, he picked up the jar and left.

Wang Tao watched Zhao Guosheng's figure disappear around the street corner, chuckled twice, turned around, and his eyes were full of light.

It was completely dark.

The moon hadn't risen yet, and the courtyard was pitch black except for a rectangular patch of light shining through the window of Fang Hai's dormitory, which fell into the courtyard like a pale carpet.

The poplar leaves fell silent, the wind stopped, even the old hen retreated to her nest, and the entire backyard was as quiet as a stagnant pool.

Cui Ying stood at the door of her dormitory, took a deep breath, and turned to look at Chen Ping, who was hiding in the corner.

Chen Ping nodded.

She cleared her throat and raised her voice, not too loud, not too soft, just enough for the neighbors to hear.

"Chen Ping, I'm going to your place to take a shower. Go out for a walk for half an hour and come back."

There was a two-second silence.

Chen Ping replied loudly, "Okay, I'll go for a walk in the street, you can take your time washing."

Fang Hai could hear their conversation clearly.

After saying that, Chen Ping walked out from the shadows, deliberately making his footsteps very loud. He walked from the front yard to the front gate, which creaked open and then creaked shut.

He stood outside the door for a few seconds, then gently pushed it open, tiptoed back, and hid in the corner.

Wang Tao and Liu Wei were already squatting there, holding their phones with the recording function turned on and the screens lit up, their sleeves shielding the light from the darkness.

The two people's eyes shone like cats', staring intently in the direction of Fang Hai's dormitory.

Cui Ying walked to the door of Chen Ping's dormitory, pushed it open, and the light came on.

She stood at the door and waved to Li Fang.

Li Fang emerged from the shadows, her steps light, carrying a bag containing a change of clothes.

She walked up to Cui Ying, and the two looked at each other. Cui Ying opened her mouth as if to say something, but didn't.

Li Fang patted the back of her hand, whispered "It's okay," and slipped into Chen Ping's dormitory.

The door closed.

The lights are on.

The curtains weren't fully drawn, leaving a small gap about the width of a palm.

Li Fang stood in front of the window and began to take off her clothes.

She took her clothes off slowly, first taking off her coat and draping it over the back of the chair, then her tank top underneath.

She had her back to the window, and the light shone on her, casting a blurry shadow on the curtains, but her outline was still discernible: shoulders, waist, and long, flowing hair.

The tap was turned on, and the sound of rushing water was especially clear in the quiet night.

Wang Tao swallowed hard, his eyes fixed on the seam in the curtain.

Liu Wei wasn't much better off; he was holding his phone up, but the lens was crooked, so it was unclear what he was filming.

Chen Ping squatted in the middle, his eyes also looking in that direction, but his expression was much calmer than the other two.

Cui Ying squatted down nearby, not noticing at first, but then realized something was wrong.

Three grown men, six eyes, all stared intently at the slit in the curtain, their eyes not even blinking.

Her face flushed instantly, and she reached out and patted Wang Tao on the back of the head.

"What are you looking at? Close your eyes!"

Wang Tao rubbed the back of his head, bared his teeth, but his eyes never left that slit: "Sister Cui Ying, Sister Fang has been making sacrifices for you, and instead of being grateful, you hit me."

"Exactly," Liu Wei echoed softly, without even turning his eyes.

Cui Ying was so angry she couldn't speak. She slapped Liu Wei again, and Liu Wei shrank back, but his eyes didn't move.

She glared at Chen Ping, who then snapped out of his daze, coughed, and looked away, but his ears were still perked up, clearly hearing the rushing water.

The courtyard was quiet.

The only sounds were the sound of water and the suppressed breathing of a few people.

Fang Hai's dormitory door was ajar.

Everyone held their breath at the same time.

Chen Ping narrowed his eyes, staring at the crack in the door.

Fang Hai poked his head out and looked around.

The moonlight hadn't risen yet, and the courtyard was pitch black except for the light in Chen Ping's dormitory, which shone through the window.

He looked at it for two seconds, then looked away.

The door closed.

Seeing this, Wang Tao sighed, looking quite disappointed.

Liu Wei cursed under his breath and whispered, "Dr. Chen, did this guy chicken out because you hit him once?"

"Don't worry, he'll definitely come out again. This kind of pervert can't resist," Chen Ping said confidently.

Fang Hai, inside the dormitory, listened to the rushing water next door and felt restless, but touching the bruises on his face, he still hesitated.
