Chapter 172 Stamp
Elena lay on her bed in her room, tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep.
She kicked the blanket into a crumpled ball, hugged the pillow to her chest, then threw it aside, then pulled it back and pressed it under her arm.
She stared at the wood grain on the ceiling, her mind filled with images of Ji Tian sitting in the study reading letters.
She imagined the other person's expression when they opened the first letter; it was probably blank. That person always had a blank expression no matter what they did.
But who knows? Maybe when he reads a certain sentence, he'll slightly curl the corners of his mouth.
She rolled over, buried her face in the pillow, let out a muffled laugh, and muttered to herself on the pillow:
"He will definitely be impressed by my writing skills. I wrote those letters so many times, carefully considering every sentence. The wording is appropriate, and the emotions are sincere. It won't be too direct and scare him, but it will still let him understand my feelings..."
She turned over again, lying on her back, holding up the pillow with both hands, staring at the embroidery on the bottom of the pillow.
"No, maybe he'll think I'm too long-winded? I wrote so many letters... No, no, he can read 'Basic Theory of Magic' five times over, what's a few dozen slightly longer letters?"
Elena covered her face with the pillow and squirmed on the bed.
Her mind was already playing out a little drama: Ji Tian sitting at his desk, sunlight streaming in from the window onto his profile.
He opened and read the letters one by one, stopping at a certain point and lingering on that line of text for a long time.
Then she looked up, a hint of tenderness she had never seen before flashing in her eyes...
She pulled the pillow off her face and covered her burning cheeks. "Oh my god! What am I thinking about..."
But those images just wouldn't stop, gushing out like water bursting its banks.
She recalled the letters she had written: "The first wild daisy has bloomed on the hillside behind the manor"; "The wooden dummy in the training ground has broken again, and you're not here, so no one is fixing it"; "That crooked tree hasn't fallen yet, but I guess it won't last much longer"...
Every single letter contained not a single word that said "I miss you," yet every single word said "I miss you."
Elena hugged the pillow back to her chest, rested her chin on it, and stared at the faint light coming through the curtains.
She mentally estimated Ji Tian's reading speed, "He should be reading the fifth year's letter by now, right? At his pace, he should be able to finish reading it all in about an hour."
She sat up in bed, straightened her crumpled dress, and combed her disheveled long hair with her fingers.
"No, I can't go like this." She lay back down. "It's too deliberate, like I'm going to see him at the exact moment."
But she simply couldn't wait.
She wanted to know Ji Tian's expression after reading those letters, what he would say, and whether he would... even just be slightly moved.
She sat up again, already having made up her mind. "I'll pretend I just woke up and go to pour some tea. I'll pass by the study and pop in for a quick look. I'll just take a look and leave, without disturbing him."
Elena rolled out of bed, her bare feet touching the cold floor, and walked to the dressing table.
In the mirror, her cheeks were flushed, her eyes were bright, and her lips were slightly red.
She reached up to tidy up the stray hairs at her temples, but then felt it was too deliberate, so she simply tucked her hair behind her ears, revealing her ear tips, which were already burning red.
"That's enough, any more tidying up will give us away."
She slipped on her slippers and tiptoed out of the room.
The hallway was quiet, with only the soft rustling of her slippers on the floor.
She deliberately walked slowly, like someone who was just passing by the study.
Walk to the door and then push it open.
"Ji Tian, are you thirsty? I'll have someone—"
The words came to an abrupt halt.
……
Ji Tian closed the diary and gently stroked the dark blue velvet cover with his fingertips.
Just as he was about to put the diary back in the drawer, the door was pushed open.
Elena stood at the door, the hem of her light apricot-colored dress swaying slightly, her gaze falling on the diary.
"You didn't read the letter? You read this?"
Ji Tian placed the diary on the table and admitted, "You let me read 'any book,' so I read it."
Elena's face flushed red instantly, burning from the base of her neck all the way to the tips of her ears.
She strode up to him and reached out to snatch it, but stopped halfway. She merely poked the cover of the diary with her fingertip, and said somewhat shyly, "Where...are you looking?"
"See the part about 'Is the allowance I give him enough?'"
Elena's fingers froze, and the blush on her face deepened.
She frantically tried to recall the contents of that diary entry in her mind—it seemed to have a lot of entries, including about pocket money, and... what else was it?
She seemed to have written something else at the time, but now her mind was completely blank, and she couldn't remember it at all.
"It's not enough," Ji Tian added.
Elena was slightly taken aback upon hearing this. "What?"
Ji Tian began to do the math with a serious expression, "The allowance you gave me is really not enough. The sect's expenses are high in the early stages, including the disciples' food, clothing, and other necessities, as well as medicinal herbs, materials for formations..."
Elena's pent-up anger finally found an outlet. She grabbed the quill on the table, threatening to poke him. "Who cares if you have enough money! Why don't you read the letters I wrote! I wrote so many! In those letters, I—you—oh dear!"
She grew angrier and angrier as she spoke, and finally threw the quill pen on the table, lunged at him, opened her mouth, and gently bit the back of Ji Tian's hand.
However, Ji Tian's physical body was so strong that it was impossible for the other party to bite him.
One bite and it actually hurt Elena.
She looked up, her eyes slightly red, it was hard to tell whether it was from embarrassment or anger, and her voice carried a hint of grievance:
"All you do is bully me... Why don't you read the letters? I've been writing those letters for years, some of them revised more than a dozen times, and you—!"
"A diary is more authentic; I'd rather see the real you than letters."
Elena became even more embarrassed and annoyed upon hearing this. She reached out and pinched his arm, but still couldn't budge it. "W-what's so true about that! That was all written when I was young and didn't know any better. Don't take it seriously!"
"When I was young and didn't understand, they called me 'stupid,' 'possessive,' and 'like a house cat.' Now that I'm older, what do you say?"
Elena blushed even more upon hearing this. She sat down in the chair opposite him, covered her burning cheeks with her hands, and peeked at him through her fingers. Seeing that he was still staring at her, she spoke in a defiant manner:
"You're still an idiot! Like a house cat that's never home!"
Ji Tian nodded upon hearing this, and asked with interest, "Then am I considered your 'property'?"
Elena lowered her head, her fingers unconsciously stroking the edge of her skirt.
"Never mind. With your personality, you'll definitely make some people like me who can't have what they want."
He might already be involved with the third, fourth, fifth, or even sixth girl.
"Um...it can't be that many, can it?"
