Chapter 34, the first thing he said was the old Demon King's accent.
Lilith stood frozen in place, her mouth still in the shape of a yawn, like a fish that had been slapped ashore.
She had only intended to vent and say a few random things, but who knew that her master would actually lift the concealment spell.
"Master—" She was about to turn around and complain when she caught a glimpse of the twelve figures in front of her turning around in unison.
It’s over.
Lilith's brain was working at high speed at this moment, and all the experience she had gained from being on the run for more than half a year rushed into her mind.
You can't run, or you'll give yourself away; you can't panic, or you'll die; you can't show weakness, because demons worship the strong, and the more cowardly you are, the more suspicious they'll become.
She took a deep breath, masking the fear on her face, and replaced it with an arrogant expression that said, "How dare you servants block my way?"
With a slight upturn at the corners of her mouth, a slightly raised chin, and slightly drooping eyes, she looked exactly like a noble young lady who had gone out for a spring outing but had her fun ruined.
"Ah," her voice squeezed out of her throat, with the distinctive rolled 'r' and drawn-out sounds of the authentic Demon King's Castle accent, each word seeming to roll three times over her tongue before she was finally able to let it out.
"I was just going out of the Demon King's castle for some fresh air, how did you servants manage to block me? So annoying."
The twelve demons looked at each other in bewilderment.
The leading archmage, dressed in black half-armor, had a grotesque scar on his face that ran diagonally from his brow bone to his jaw. He frowned and sized her up.
She wore a deep purple dress with a demonic style, had long silver-white hair, purple eyes, and carried no weapons.
This face... seems familiar, but I can't quite place it.
More importantly, she had no magical energy fluctuations and looked like a helpless demon noble lady.
But how could a noble lady appear in this desolate wilderness?
"Who are you?" the scarred man spoke, his voice like two pieces of sandpaper rubbing against each other. "What are you doing here?"
Lilith's heart skipped a beat, but her face remained impassive. Instead, she rolled her eyes, her tone carrying an incredulous "You don't recognize me?" tone: "Which legion are you from? How come you don't even recognize me?"
Scarface paused for a moment.
Seizing the moment of hesitation, Lilith took two steps forward, hands on her hips, head tilted back, and said in a tone that said, "I'll remember you!": "My father is the deputy commander of the Demon King's Castle Guard! What does my outing have to do with you? Why aren't you fighting on the front lines? What are you doing here in this desolate wilderness?"
She spoke with such conviction, but her heart was practically leaping out of her throat.
Deputy Commander of the Imperial Guard – this was a name she made up on the spot. The Demon King's City did indeed have an Imperial Guard, but she had no idea who the deputy commander was. What if the other party knew him?
Scarface's brows furrowed even more, but his tone softened noticeably: "The Deputy Commander's daughter... why is she here alone?"
Lilith noticed that he wasn't asking "What are you doing here?" but rather "Why are you here alone?"
This shows that he believed it, at least 70-80% of the time. The remaining 20-30% was about "why there were no guards".
"They got separated from the guards, of course." Lilith shrugged, her tone carrying an air of "doesn't even need asking?" "I was feeling stuffy in the carriage, so I got out for some fresh air. I wandered a bit too far, and when I came back, they were gone. I don't know if they got lost or were killed." She paused, then added, "A bunch of useless trash. I'll have Father replace them when we get back."
As she finished speaking, she glanced out of the corner of her eye at the direction where Ji Tian was hiding.
Master should still be there, right? He wouldn't have abandoned her and run away, would he?
Scarface remained silent for a moment, seemingly weighing something.
At that moment, a demon carrying a book and wearing a monocle came up behind him and whispered a few words in his ear. Although the voice was very low, Lilith could still vaguely hear the words "noble", "accent", and "doesn't seem fake".
Scarface nodded, his guard largely lifted. He bowed slightly, his right fist pressed against his left chest: "This humble general has been rude. I wonder if Miss is returning to the Demon King's Castle, or..."
"I'm going to the front lines," Lilith interrupted him, raising her chin even higher.
"The front lines?" Scarface was taken aback. "Miss, there's a war going on there."
"That's why we're going," Lilith said matter-of-factly, her tone tinged with a naive, arrogant capriciousness. "Staying in the Demon King's castle all day is so boring. It would be a waste not to go to the front lines after finally getting out. Besides, with you guys there, what's there to be afraid of?"
Scarface opened his mouth as if to say something, but in the end he said nothing.
As a young lady from a noble family, and the daughter of the deputy commander of the Imperial Guard, she certainly had the right to be willful, and what she said was true: with them around, nothing would happen.
"Miss, why don't you come with us?" Scarface gestured invitingly. "We are on a mission, and once it's over, we'll escort you to the front lines."
Lilith's heart skipped a beat.
With you guys? Wouldn't that just give us away even faster?
But she gave a "you know what's good for you" look and lazily nodded: "Fine, I'm bored by myself anyway. Where are you guys going?"
"We're looking for the dragon," Scarface replied neither humbly nor arrogantly.
Lilith's heart skipped a beat—her master was right, they really were looking for a dragon.
"A dragon?" Her eyes widened, her tone carrying just the right amount of curiosity and excitement. "Are there really dragons in these mountains? What do they look like? How big are they? Can they breathe fire?"
"You'll see when you see it, Miss." Scarface stepped aside, and the other demons also made way for him.
Lilith strode forward, her steps as light as a cat that had found a new toy.
Her heart was racing, but her steps were steady.
After running away for more than half a year, her best skill was "pretending not to be afraid".
After taking a few steps, she suddenly stopped, turned back to look at Scarface, and asked in a tone as if she had suddenly remembered something, "By the way, do you have anything to eat? I'm hungry."
Scarface paused for a moment, then pulled out a piece of dry food from his pocket.
Lilith glanced at the dark, unappetizing object and frowned. "...This is it? Don't you have any small cakes?"
"A small...cake?"
"Never mind," Lilith waved her hand, took the piece of dry ration, took a bite, and looked like she was chewing a stone. "Just eat this. When we get to the front lines, I'll have my father find me a few pastry chefs to take with me."
She continued walking, chewing on the piece of dry ration that was hard enough to kill someone, while her mind screamed: Oh no! Master, are you even here?! Your disciple is about to be kidnapped!
Behind her, Scarface watched her slender figure and whispered to his deputy, "Send men ahead to scout. We can't let anything happen to Miss before we find any trace of the dragon."
"Yes."
"Also," Scarface paused, "send someone to check if the deputy commander of the Imperial Guard has a daughter."
"Sir, you suspect—"
"Better safe than sorry." Scarface touched the scar on her face. "But her accent and demeanor really don't seem fake. Even if a noble lady from the Demon King's Castle falls on hard times, she can't fake the pride that's in her bones."
The deputy nodded and quickly left.
Lilith walked in the middle of the group, her long, silvery-white hair shimmering in the twilight, her deep purple skirt swaying gently on the forest path.
She was still chewing that piece of dry food, chewing slowly and forcefully, as if she were chewing on her own destiny.
Her biggest worry now is whether her master will be able to save her in time if they find the dragon and it breathes fire.
What worried her even more was whether her master was actually there.
She glanced back furtively, and when no one was around, she whispered something:
"Master? Are you there?"
Just as Lilith finished muttering to herself, a calm and gentle voice, tinged with appreciation, suddenly echoed in her mind.
"I am here."
