Chapter 94 The Secret of the Longevity Village
Under the old locust tree at the village entrance, several elderly people were chatting casually.
Old John tapped his pipe against the sole of his shoe, refilled it with tobacco, and squinted as he said, "Isn't it strange? My old yellow dog, almost twenty years old, has lost all its teeth, yet it can still chase rabbits all over the mountain."
"That's right," Aunt Martha from the tailor's family chimed in. "My old cat is almost fifteen years old, and its fur is still shiny. Last month, it caught a mouse and showed it off in the yard for most of the day."
The elderly people nodded in agreement, and the conversation gradually shifted from cats and dogs to people.
The old village chief tapped his cane, a hint of doubt in his cloudy eyes. "Speaking of which, the villagers haven't been sick much these past few years. They used to cough a few times when the seasons changed, but these past few years, not even a headache or fever has been seen. I've lived for almost seventy years, and this is the first time I've ever seen anything like this."
"Don't even mention illness. My son fell off a horse last year and broke his leg, but he was walking again after only three days in bed, and was bouncing around again in half a month. Even the pastor we hired at great expense said he'd never seen anything like it," a middle-aged man interjected.
Someone chimed in, "And the crops in the fields, the harvest has been getting better year after year. Same seeds, same land, but the yield has doubled."
The elderly people looked at each other, none of them able to explain what was going on.
Old John said slowly, "Whatever happened, it's a good thing. Maybe some important person passing by took pity on us and is secretly protecting our village."
"Where would such an important person come from? Our little village is dirt poor; who would even give us a second glance?"
"That's hard to say." The old village chief raised his head, his cloudy eyes fixed on the dirt road at the village entrance. Suddenly, he narrowed his eyes. "Hey, look, a knight is coming over there?"
Everyone turned their heads and saw dust billowing in the distance as a tall, black steed galloped along the dirt road. On its back sat a figure clad in light silver-white knight armor, the armor gleaming coldly in the sunlight. A long sword hung at his waist, its scabbard ancient and simple. The knight was tall and slender, with an extraordinary aura, clearly no ordinary person.
"Whose knight is this? Why is he coming to our poor place?" someone muttered.
As the knight approached, old John's eyes widened suddenly, and he almost dropped his pipe.
"Isn't that... isn't that Old Jack's son from next door? Ji Tian?"
Upon closer inspection, everyone realized it was true.
Although he was wearing knight's armor, his face and figure were clearly those of the Jack family's son who would return every year on the Day of Revelation.
"Good heavens, this kid's been hanging around the lord's manor for a few years and he's actually become a knight!"
Ji Tian dismounted, pulled on the reins, and nodded slightly to the crowd.
He was followed by a white horse, on which sat a young woman.
The woman was dressed in a dark blue riding outfit, her light golden hair gleaming in the sunlight, her face exquisite, and her demeanor serene—she was clearly a noble lady.
The old men looked at each other, and old John stammered, "Ji... Ji Tian, who is this...?"
"My friend," Ji Tian said succinctly, turning to the side and reaching out his hand towards the horse's back.
Elena pursed her lips, offered him her hand, and gracefully leaped off the horse, landing steadily on the ground.
She straightened her clothes and smiled politely at the elderly people.
The old village chief snapped out of his daze and said repeatedly, "Good, good, go home quickly. Your parents have been talking about you for a long time. You're coming back earlier than usual this year."
"Hmm." Ji Tian led the two horses and walked with Elena deeper into the village.
Behind them, the voices of several elderly people began to rise again, this time lowered even further.
"Jack's family is incredibly lucky; his son has become a knight and brought home a noble lady..."
"That girl is so beautiful, like someone from a painting..."
"Do you think those strange things that have happened in our village these past few years might be related to Ji Tian? That kid's been unusual since he was little..."
"Shh, don't guess."
Old John blew the ash out of his pipe, watched Ji Tian's receding figure, and chuckled, "Who cares? As long as it's a good thing."
……
Ji Tian's courtyard was not large, with earthen walls and gray tiles, and it was kept very clean.
The chicken coop and sheep pen in the corner of the yard have been reinforced with new wooden planks, and the thatched roof has been replaced with more durable reeds... These are all things that Ji Tian tidies up every year when he comes back.
Old Jack was squatting in the yard chopping wood when he heard footsteps. He looked up, paused for a moment, then stood up, almost dropping the axe in his hand.
"Father." Ji Tian loosened the reins and stepped forward.
He opened his mouth, his gaze shifting from his son's knight's armor to the light blonde-haired girl behind him. His expression changed from surprise to confusion, and then from confusion to a nervous helplessness.
"This...this is..."
Ji Tian stepped aside, "Her name is Elena. I brought her to see you."
Elena stepped forward, bowed slightly, and said in a gentle voice, "Uncle, I apologize for the intrusion."
Old Jack wiped his hands haphazardly on his apron, his lips trembled, and after a long while, he managed to squeeze out, "No, no, don't bother me... Um, come in, come in and sit down! Old woman—Ji Tian is back! And, and he brought guests!"
A series of hurried footsteps came from inside the house. Ji Tian's mother peeked out from the door. She was wearing a faded apron and her hands were still covered in flour, so she was obviously kneading dough.
When she saw her son, her eyes lit up immediately, and when she saw the girl behind him, her eyes lit up even more.
"Oh dear! This child, she didn't even tell me she was coming back!" She rushed out to greet her, wiping her hands on her apron, and pulled Elena up and down, "What a beautiful young lady! Come in, come in, it's chilly outside. Old man, don't just stand there, go boil some water and make some tea!"
Old Jack sighed and turned to run towards the kitchen.
Elena was pulled into the house by Ji Tian's mother. She glanced back at Ji Tian with a hint of helplessness in her eyes.
Ji Tian tied the two horses to the wooden stakes outside the yard and walked into the yard.
Just like in previous years, he teleported directly to the village entrance with his horse, and then rode the horse on the rest of the way.
Perhaps it would be more convenient to teleport directly and then use supernatural powers to alter the villagers' perceptions, but he subconsciously didn't want to do that.
Tsk, it's a pity his parents are sentimental and won't leave with him...
Under the eaves of the neighbor's house, an old, mangled yellow dog crawled out of its kennel, wagged its tail, and rushed toward Jack's house, rubbing against Ji Tian's leg.
Ji Tian lowered his head and reached out to pat the dog's head.
"Sigh~ If you had been willing to follow me back then, you could have transformed into human form by now."
The dog let out a "woof," as if it were filled with regret.
"But it's alright. With my current abilities, I might be able to let you live until the transformation stage."
From inside came her mother's warm and talkative voice: "Girl, what's your name? How old are you? What does your family do? Is it far from home? Are you hungry? Have some water first, I'll cook right away..."
