Chapter 22 Yakoda: This uncle... is he out of his mind?!
Fanes, holding Yakoda's hand, walked back along the cobblestone path of Liyue Harbor, his mind still replaying the scene of bumping into Zhongli at the entrance of New Moon Pavilion. As he silently reviewed whether his acting was natural enough, he suddenly caught a glimpse of a middle-aged man standing next to a roadside tea stall, holding a teacup and looking in their direction.
The man looked to be around fifty years old. His clothes and appearance were not particularly eye-catching, but when he stood there, he had an indescribable calm and composed demeanor, like an old tea drinker who had been sitting in a teahouse for half his life.
Fanes' gaze lingered on his face for a moment, feeling that he had seen the man's features somewhere before, but he couldn't quite place them.
Just as Fanes was about to look away and continue walking, the man approached him. His steps were unhurried, the teacup still firmly in his hand. Reaching Fanes, the man slightly bowed, his gaze sweeping over Fanes's Fatui coat before offering a seemingly benevolent smile: "Young man, you must be the new twelfth seat of the Fatui, right?"
Fanes stopped in his tracks and looked up at the smiling, amiable-looking middle-aged man in front of him.
Yun Tian. Currently serving as the Star of the Seven Stars of Liyue, responsible for intelligence work in Liyue. Fanes recalled the relevant information from those posts in his previous life—the Star of the Seven Stars of Liyue kept a low profile, in charge of the intelligence network, and was the most low-key among the Seven Stars of Liyue, but the amount of information he possessed could probably turn half of Liyue Harbor upside down.
A warning bell rang in Fanes' mind, but he quickly put on the innocent expression typical of a six-year-old: "I am indeed the twelfth seat of the Fools, and who are you, sir?"
Yun Tian put down his teacup and extended his right hand: "Nice to meet you. I am Yun Tian, one of the Seven Stars of Liyue, from the Tian Shu Star. You can call me Uncle Tian."
Fanes reached out and shook hands with him, thinking to himself, "Good heavens, I've only been in Liyue Harbor for one day, and I haven't even warmed my seat at the Northern Bank yet, and the Liyue Seven Stars have already come knocking on my door."
After releasing his grip, Fanes sighed, his tone filled with undisguised helplessness: "Seriously? You're testing me on my very first day in office? Can't you at least let me have some fun for a couple of days? I haven't even figured out the layout of Liyue Harbor yet."
Yun Tian was momentarily speechless at his blunt words, his lips twitching slightly: "Young man... can you not be so direct? You're making things difficult for everyone. Don't you understand any of the rules of the martial world?"
Fanes blinked. "Huh? There are rules of the underworld?"
Yakoda peeked out from behind Fanes, blinked her starry eyes, and interjected, "Boss, I know that! The rule of the underworld is mutual respect. Usually, you give the other person face. If you don't, they'll tear your face off and hang it on the wall."
Fanes turned to look at her: "Am I really that cruel?"
Yakoda nodded seriously, her cat-ear hat swaying slightly. "Of course! Back in Nordkal, they do it even worse. They hang people directly on the streetlights, they're practically dried-out frozen meat. I used to be too scared to look up when I passed by at night."
(Guess what the prototype of Zhi Dong is? Hanging it on a street lamp as dried frozen meat is also... quite reasonable!)
Yun Tian stood to the side and listened to the conversation. His expression changed from "veteran of the underworld" to "What are you talking about?" and then from "What are you talking about?" to "Did I wander onto the wrong set?"
Yun Tian cleared his throat, trying to steer the conversation back on track: "...Can you guys be normal for once? We're not some kind of villains. The Liyue Seven Stars aren't as scary as you think. As long as you Fatui don't cause trouble in Liyue, we won't bother with you."
Upon hearing this, Fanes' eyes lit up. He immediately straightened up, raised his right hand to his temple in a somewhat awkward military salute, and said solemnly, "Don't worry, Uncle Tian! I'm a peace enthusiast! I would never cause trouble in Liyue!"
Yun Tian frowned slightly, his gaze lingering on Fanes's overly serious face for two seconds.
The pronunciations of "和" and "核" are indeed subtly similar in Liyue dialect, but Yun Tian thought about it and felt that the six-year-old child in front of him probably wouldn't be hiding any double entendres in his words.
Yun Tian nodded, his tone softening slightly: "I didn't expect you to be such a peace-loving child."
Fanes smiled innocently, secretly thinking: Anyway, you don't know what nuclear peace is.
Yun Tian was about to exchange a few more pleasantries, but his gaze suddenly drifted past Fanes' shoulder and landed on the other side of the street. His expression subtly shifted, then he waved in that direction: "Oh, Sister Gan Yu is here too?"
Fanes followed his gaze and looked back—across the street stood a young woman with blue hair, wearing a pair of distinctive black and red Kirin horns on her head, dressed in the uniform of the Liyue Seven Stars' secretary, and holding a stack of documents in her hands.
Gan Yu was walking towards them with gentle and graceful steps. When she saw Yun Tian, she gave a slight bow.
"Uncle Tian, I just came from the General Affairs Department and happened to be passing by here..."
Yun Tian turned to Fanes and smiled: "This is Gan Yu, the secretary of the Seven Stars of Liyue. You can contact her for any official business in Liyue in the future."
Before Fanes could even greet him, Yakoda, standing beside him, had already tilted her head back to look at the sky, blinked her starry eyes twice, and then leaned close to Fanes's ear and whispered something in a low voice that was just loud enough for the people next to them to hear: "Boss, is this old man out of his mind?"
Fanes almost burst out laughing, quickly covering his mouth with his hand: "Ahem... What's wrong?"
Yakoda pointed at Yuntian, then at Ganyu: "He just called that woman 'sister,' but he himself looks much older than her. In our area, either people misuse titles based on seniority, or..."
Yakoda didn't finish her sentence, but the words "you're out of your mind" were already written all over her face.
Yun Tian's expression froze for a moment. He looked down at himself, then up at Gan Yu, and then at Yakoda's starry eyes that seemed to say, "I'm analyzing this seriously." His lips moved slightly.
"Seniority! It's a matter of seniority! This is respect! Don't you understand respect? Sister Gan Yu... she has a lot of experience!"
Gan Yu stood to the side and smiled gently, replying softly, "Uncle Tian is right, I did join the company much earlier than him."
Yakoda said "Oh," but the "Oh" was drawn out a bit, carrying a perfunctory feeling of "you say so, so be it."
Seeing that she was about to continue asking questions, Fanes quickly reached out and tugged at her sleeve, then looked up at Yuntian with a bright smile: "Uncle Tian, Sister Ganyu, we'll head back now. We just arrived in Liyue and still need to unpack. Let's keep in touch if anything comes up!"
Yun Tian nodded, his gaze lingering on him for a moment: "Okay. Remember what you said, peace-loving little one."
"I've got it! I've got it!"
Fanes grabbed Jakoda's hand and ran towards the North Bank. After running a dozen steps, he slowed down and looked back.
Yun Tian and Gan Yu exchanged a few words beside the tea stall, then walked off in different directions. The middle-aged man's figure blended into the streets of Liyue Harbor, looking just like any ordinary tea-drinking passerby.
Yakoda, panting, followed beside him: "Boss, is that uncle really a Seven Star? He doesn't look that powerful at all."
As he walked, Fanes stroked his chin: "The more powerful a person is, the more they like to pretend to be ordinary. Think about that Rock God you bumped into; he looked like a frail, bookish scholar."
Yakoda was silent for two seconds, then nodded in deep agreement: "That makes sense. Boss, you don't seem that impressive, are you actually incredibly capable?"
Fanes paused, looked down at Akoda's bright, starry eyes, and pondered the question seriously. His final conclusion was...
"I might really be an exception. I don't look that great, and I'm not actually that great either."
Yakoda said "Oh," then thought for a moment and added, "But boss, you're lucky! Luck is a skill too! There's an old hunter in our Nordkalai who said that lucky people live longer than strong people."
Fanes laughed and patted Yakoda's hat. "That's true. Let's go back and rest. We still need to figure out how to get along with the Rock God tomorrow."
