You ask me why Usa became a pet? Don't ask, it's just the protagonist's halo! I've seen other novels written like this! I can't think of any other formula either!

The laboratory was much more spacious than Fanes had imagined.

Several rows of long tables were neatly arranged in the hall on the first floor, their surfaces covered with flasks, test tubes, and instruments whose names I didn't know. The liquids in the glasswares shimmered with various colors under the illumination of the crystal lamps. A faint, ozone-like astringent smell permeated the air, mixed with some indescribable herbal aroma.

The doctor walked ahead, leading the way. The hem of his white coat twirled slightly as he turned around, his tone as casual as if he were introducing his studio to an acquaintance.

"This mainly involves some basic energy sample analysis. I've collected samples of the power leaked from the Usa Seal over the past three years, which is just enough to create a complete fluctuation curve."

Fanes followed behind him, his gaze subtly sweeping over the instruments and test tubes. He noticed a row of sealed jars in the corner containing those familiar deep purple fruits, each jar labeled and dated, appearing to be a series of samples collected over time.

The black mist floating on the skin of those fruits was much thicker than the one he had seen in the wild, so black that it was almost opaque, like a small clump of solidified night trapped in a glass jar.

Fanes stopped in front of a jar, pointed to the fruit inside, and said, "Doctor, this looks a little different from the purple fruit we found in the wild before?"

The doctor turned around, tilting his bird-beak mask slightly towards Fanes, as if assessing the six-year-old's observational skills. He walked over and stood beside Fanes, his tone still gentle.

"Good eye. The fruits in the wild only contain the primal energy that Usa has released, which is scarce and unstable. But these—"

The doctor pointed to the fruits shrouded in thick black mist in the jar. "These are processed samples. I mixed some of the Abyss's energy into the raw power I collected, and the resulting changes... are quite interesting."

Fanes stared at the purple fruit slowly swirling within the black mist, a thought popping into his head: "I knew it! How could an angel's power possibly emit black smoke like that? Turns out, the Doctor mixed in some Abyss stuff."

The doctor seemed oblivious to the subtle change in his expression and had already turned and taken two steps toward the stairs: "Should we go up and take a look at Usa? Although the sealed main body is a few floors below, we can see part of its outline from the observation room on the top floor, even through a layer of rock crystal wall."

The doctor stopped and turned his head. His voice, hidden behind the mask, carried a friendly tone, as if to say, "I'm giving you a good opportunity. Maybe you can tame a decent pet."

Yakoda peeked half her head out from behind Fanes, her starry eyes filled with disbelief: "This thing can be a pet?"

The doctor tilted his head, his tone still unhurried: "Anything is possible."

Fanes quickly waved his hand and took two steps back: "Um... I think we should forget it. I was just passing by and taking a look. A dragon of Usa's caliber is best left to the Knights of Favonius to worry about. I'm just a six-year-old kid..."

As Fanes was speaking, a slight tremor suddenly came from the floor beneath his feet.

The tremor came without warning, like a deep hum coming from deep underground.

Fanes felt a slight tingling in the soles of his feet, and a row of test tubes on the shelf next to him swayed, clattering together with a soft, tinkling sound. He subconsciously looked up at the Doctor, who was looking down at a small device on his wrist. A row of flashing lights on the device's surface changed from green to red.

"Huh?"

The doctor uttered a single syllable with a slightly rising tone, his tone conveying less surprise and more an air of knowing "it was bound to happen."

The next second, the floor beneath Fanes' feet cracked open.

The crack appeared quickly and violently, like a giant jaws tearing open from the bottom up, with fragments of rock crystal and dust crashing down into the abyss.

Fanes only had time to feel the ground slip beneath his feet before he lost his balance and was pulled downwards by gravity. In mid-air, he instinctively reached out to grab something, but his fingertips brushed against the edge of the crumbling rock wall and grasped nothing.

The sound of the wind rushed into my ears, and in my field of vision, Yakoda's terrified star-shaped face quickly shrank and receded, along with the white-coated figure of the doctor standing at the edge of the crack, looking down.

"Boss—"

Yakoda's voice was torn apart by the wind.

Then it was just falling, falling, and falling again.

Fanes didn't know if he had been lost for a few seconds or tens of seconds. He only felt his body pass through a viscous barrier that was like a liquid or a gas, and the surrounding temperature suddenly changed from normal to ice-cold.

Finally, he slammed heavily onto something, the impact causing him to curl up and roll twice before coming to a stop. He lay sprawled on the cold, hard ground, a large bump on his forehead, his whole body aching.

Phanes struggled to lift his head and found himself lying in a huge cave.

"Ouch! Holy crap! My back!"

The cave's dome was so high that one couldn't see the top, and the surrounding rock walls were covered with a layer of dark red crystals that emitted a faint glow.

In the very center of the cave, a colossal creature lay coiled—its body covered in jet-black scales, its neck winding, and its outstretched wings resembling two enormous black curtains.

The creature was lying on the ground with its eyes closed, seemingly awakened by the commotion. It slowly raised its enormous head, its golden vertical pupils narrowing into two thin lines, and turned towards Fanes.

Usa.

As Fanes lay on the ground, watching the enormous black dragon slowly raise its neck, its golden vertical pupils locking onto him. Only one thought kept repeating in his mind: "Holy crap, holy crap, holy crap, holy crap, why is it me again?"

Usa moved. It simply changed from lying down to standing on its forelegs, but the ground tremors caused by that movement made Fanes feel like a leaf caught in a typhoon.

A deep, rolling roar came from the black dragon's throat, the sound a predator makes when it locks onto its prey. Then it swooped down toward Fanes at a speed that belied its size.

Fanes' mind went blank. He had no time to think or plan anything; the dragon head, bigger than him, was almost right in front of him.

Reaching into his pocket, he retrieved the Seven-Colored Eye of God. Before he could even figure out why he was doing this, Fanes forcefully threw the Eye of God, which was still shimmering with seven colors, toward Usa's mouth.

The Eye of God traced an arc through the air, flying precisely into Usa's gaping maw and sliding down its growling throat.

Even Fanes himself was stunned. He watched as the Eye of God disappeared into the depths of the black dragon's dark throat, his mind churning with a thousand questions like "What did I do?", but it was too late to regret it.

Usa's expression suddenly changed. The fierce light in his golden vertical pupils seemed to be extinguished by something, and he trembled violently. Then, the black dragon's entire body began to tremble violently, and seven colors of light overflowed from between his scales.

Its size shrank dramatically in the light, shrinking back, folding, and compressing like a deflated balloon. Its enormous wings folded into two short, small wings, its long neck shortened to the size of an ordinary pet, and even its ferocious dragon head shrank into a round little head, its golden vertical pupils turning into two round, amber eyes.

In less than the time it takes to drink half a cup of tea, the once domineering dragon Usa, which had once reigned supreme over Mondstadt, was reduced to a trembling young dragon curled up on the ground.

Its body was covered in fine, dark scales that shimmered with a faint light; it had a round, bulging belly; short, almost invisible wings; and a tail that swayed restlessly. It raised its head, its round, amber eyes looking at Fanes, and let out a soft, low whimper.

Fanes sat on the ground and stared at the young dragon for two seconds.

"...It really became a pet?"

The young dragon tilted its head and let out another whimper.

Suddenly, a rustling sound came from the crack in the cave ceiling. Fanes looked up and saw Yakoda peering down from the edge of the crack, her light golden hair swaying as it fell through the gap.

"Boss! Are you alright?! I saw that big black dragon suddenly shrink! You didn't eat it, did you?!"

Fanes picked up the still trembling baby dragon and stood up, looking up at Yakoda and shouting, "It's alright! It's just that I have an extra follower! Tell the Doctor to find a way to get me up there!"

The baby dragon curled up in his arms, its two short front paws resting on his arm, its round amber eyes blinking twice, and a soft gurgling sound coming from its throat.

Fanes looked down at it and sighed, "Alright, from now on you'll be called Little Black. Don't steal food from Yakoda."
