Chapter 139 Fire Safety Failure
Captain Cai picked up the teacup on the counter, took a sip, and casually said, "We follow the rules," before leading his men away.
Lin Feng asked Kui Zi to retrieve the previous fire safety inspection report and then called the renovation company's project manager. The manager swore that all construction work was carried out according to the blueprints, and that the fire escape route was even a few centimeters wider than required by regulations, with absolutely no violations.
Kui Zi hung up the phone and looked at Lin Feng with a serious expression: "Something's not right. Why did they have to come two days before the opening? It's obvious someone made arrangements to deliberately cause trouble."
Lin Feng sat on the sofa and pondered for a moment before instructing Kui Zi to find out more about Captain Cai. Kui Zi went out and made several phone calls, returning with an even more somber expression.
He told Lin Feng that this man surnamed Cai usually had close ties with Wu San from the east of the city, and Wu San was Zuo Ning's subordinate.
After hearing this, Lin Feng stood up, walked to the window, and looked at the bustling street below. He instantly understood.
Zuo Ning's own venue was swept in disarray, while Bai Jinhai bucked the trend and rose to prominence, opening seven more chain billiard halls in one go. Zuo Ning's people saw this and were jealous, so they created obstacles in the fire safety inspection process, using methods that were neither too lenient nor too harsh, just enough to make things difficult for him and leave him feeling frustrated.
Lin Feng said to Kui Zi, "Don't mention this to Sister Hong yet, I'll handle it myself."
He took out his phone, scrolled to Ye Qinghan's number, and hovered his thumb over the screen for a few seconds. Since they parted ways at the hospital, their contact had become much less frequent. Ye Qinghan deliberately avoided him, and he didn't actively bother her. Now that the unspoken understanding had been broken, he didn't know how to interact with her anymore.
He took a deep breath and pressed the dial button. The phone rang several times before it was answered. Ye Qinghan's voice came through the receiver, still calm, but with a subtle fluctuation that only Lin Feng could detect.
Lin Feng briefly explained the fire safety inspection, saying that the billiard hall had been issued a rectification notice and he wanted to ask Aunt Ye to help inquire about the situation. Ye Qinghan didn't ask any further questions, only asking him to come to the Municipal Bureau.
Lin Feng took a taxi to the entrance of the Municipal Bureau, and the security guard let him in after verifying his ID card.
Ye Qinghan's office was on the fourth floor, with the words "Director's Office" in gold lettering prominently displayed on the door. He knocked twice, and a steady "Come in" came from inside.
Ye Qinghan sat behind her desk, her dark blue police uniform crisp and sharp, the epaulets of a third-level police superintendent exuding authority. Her hair was shorter than when they last met, making her appear even more capable and decisive. Seeing Lin Feng enter, she closed the documents she was reviewing and placed them aside, leaning back in her chair as she watched him walk to the opposite seat.
Lin Feng placed the fire safety rectification notice on the table and pushed it over. Ye Qinghan picked it up, scanned it from beginning to end, put the notice down, and looked at him.
"Do you own this billiards hall?"
Lin Feng nodded and decided to be frank. He told Ye Qinghan that the funding for opening the seven billiard halls came from Sister Hong, and that he was now the second-largest shareholder of the Longlin Group.
She recounted how she met Sister Hong, the initial intention of starting a legitimate business together, and the ins and outs of the renovation preparations, omitting all the ambiguous entanglements in between.
After listening, Ye Qinghan leaned back in her chair, crossed her legs, and tapped her fingertips lightly on the armrest. She remained silent for a while before speaking, her tone tinged with an indescribable bitterness: "Shangguan Jinghong is quite generous to you."
Lin Feng didn't respond to that, only saying that Sister Hong was a very important partner of his, and that the idea of opening a proper billiards hall was decided by the two of them together, with the initial intention of doing business in a down-to-earth manner.
Ye Qinghan remained silent for a moment, then picked up the rectification notice again and glanced at it, saying, "I can just give them a heads-up. There are indeed occasional cases at the fire brigade where some people demand bribes or deliberately make things difficult."
After saying that, she picked up the landline on the table, dialed a number, and gave a few instructions to the person on the other end of the phone. The gist of it was that the Dragon Scale Billiards Club was a legitimate business with complete fire safety inspection documents, and that the relevant departments should re-verify the information so as not to affect the company's normal operations.
After hanging up the phone, she told Lin Feng that everything was arranged and the rectification notice would be revoked by tomorrow at the latest.
After saying that, she leaned back in her chair and looked at Lin Feng, her gaze lingering on his face for a long time.
She sighed softly to herself. She knew perfectly well that this young man had many entanglements in his life and that his relationship with Shangguan Jinghong was extraordinary. In the past, she wouldn't have bothered to even glance at a man like that.
But he was her savior, and they had been so close. Even though she was usually hard-hearted, she eventually fell for him. She couldn't understand herself when she had become so unprincipled.
She stood up, walked over to Lin Feng, and asked him if his wound still hurt. Lin Feng said it had stopped hurting a long time ago and was completely healed.
I extended my finger and gently pressed on his left chest. Through the thin fabric of his T-shirt, I could feel the slightly raised scab-covered scar beneath his skin.
Her fingertips lingered there for a few seconds, then she simply placed her palm on his chest, feeling the steady, powerful heartbeat through the fabric.
"That day at the hospital... I really thought you couldn't be saved." Ye Qinghan's voice was very soft, so soft that only the two of them could hear it, hiding a trace of lingering fear and tenderness.
Lin Feng reached out and gently placed his palm on her back. Through the fabric of her police uniform, he could feel her back muscles stiffen slightly before slowly relaxing.
My palm gently traced the lines of her back and stopped at her waist.
Ye Qinghan unconsciously leaned closer to him, the distance between them suddenly closing, their breaths mingling. Beneath the stiff fabric, her unique warmth wafted through the air, and Lin Feng could clearly feel that her breathing was a few degrees more rapid than before.
"You brat, this is the director's office." Ye Qinghan turned his face slightly away, his voice low, carrying a hint of barely perceptible embarrassment and panic.
Just then, footsteps sounded in the corridor, followed by a knock on the door: "Director Ye, Deputy Director Zhou is here to report to you."
Ye Qinghan immediately took two steps back as if she had been electrocuted, quickly turned around to face away from the window, raised her hand to quickly straighten her slightly disheveled collar, and then tucked the stray strands of hair behind her ears.
She took a deep breath to calm herself before turning to the door and saying in a deep voice, "Have him wait for me in the conference room." Her voice had regained its usual calm and powerful tone.
The footsteps outside the door gradually faded away.
Ye Qinghan turned to look at Lin Feng, her cheeks still flushed with a faint pink hue. She gently patted his chest and whispered, "Hurry up and leave." Then she quickly walked back to her desk, sat down, picked up the documents again, and gestured with her chin for him to leave.
Lin Feng looked at her trying to remain calm, but her ears were slightly red. A smile flashed in his eyes. He didn't say anything more, turned around, opened the office door, and walked out.
