I have something to say!
……
Half an hour after Yu Huan, Lin Feng embraced Zhou Mei.
Just then, my phone rang.
It wasn't an incoming call ringtone, but the notification sound of a WeChat video call, echoing in the quiet bedroom.
Both of them stopped moving at the same time. Lin Feng withdrew his hand, and Zhou Mei loosened her arms around his neck.
On the bedside table, Lin Feng's phone screen was lit up, displaying Su Mengya's profile picture and the words "Invitation to video call".
Raymond Lam propped himself up and reached for his phone.
The screen's light shone on his face as his thumb hovered over the answer button, then he pressed hang-up. The phone screen went dark, and the bedroom fell silent again.
Zhou Mei had already sat up in bed.
She pulled up her black lace nightgown, which had been dragged up to her waist, to cover her chest. Her fingers were still trembling slightly as she reached behind her back to fasten the bra hooks; it took her two tries to get them on.
Then she quickly pulled the thin straps of her pajamas back onto her shoulders and tucked the hair that was falling across her face behind her ears.
"Who?" Her voice was a little hoarse.
"The girl next door." Lin Feng placed his phone screen-down on the bedside table.
No sooner had he finished speaking than his phone rang again.
The screen flipped back to show Su Mengya's profile picture. Lin Feng's finger reached for the hang-up button again.
Zhou Mei's voice came from the side. "Answer it. I won't say anything. Maybe it's urgent."
Lin Feng glanced at her. Zhou Mei had already pulled up the neckline of her pajamas, the black lace neatly covering her chest.
She curled up with her legs tucked in at her sides, her expression returning to its usual calm from class, but her ears were still red.
Lin Feng picked up his phone, switched to voice call mode, and put the receiver to his ear.
Su Mengya's voice came from the other end of the phone.
The sound wasn't loud, but in the quiet bedroom, every word was clearly audible.
"You little rascal, have you missed your big sister?"
Lin Feng turned the receiver volume down one notch. "Hmm."
"Just one thing? My mom asked me to ask you if you want to eat crabs. If you do, I'll bring you a few tomorrow; they're all raised by my uncle's family!"
"OK."
"What are you doing? Why are you speaking so softly?"
"I'm getting ready to sleep."
"You went to sleep at just past nine? Are you feeling unwell?" Su Mengya's voice carried a hint of worry.
"No. I'm just a little tired today."
"Then you should go to sleep early. Message me when you get back tomorrow."
"it is good."
Goodnight, you little rascal.
Goodnight, Mengya!
The phone hangs up.
Lin Feng placed his phone face down on the bedside table. The bedroom was so quiet that only the hum of the air conditioner vent could be heard.
Zhou Mei sat on the edge of the bed, her legs dangling over the edge, her calves, encased in black stockings, pressed together, her fingers gripping the edge of the sheet.
"This is your girlfriend, right?" Her voice was flat, more like a statement than a question.
Lin Feng opened his mouth.
To say otherwise would be too far-fetched.
What woman wouldn't recognize Su Mengya's tone on the phone, and that "little rascal" she called her?
His silence was an admission.
"Teacher Zhou, actually I—"
"No need to explain." Zhou Mei stood up from the edge of the bed. She walked to the wardrobe, opened the door, and took out a conservative nightgown to put on.
When she tied the belt, her fingers gripped it tightly, creating a thin crease around her waist.
When he turned around, his face was completely expressionless. Just like in class.
"You can leave first thing tomorrow morning." The voice was in the same tone as in class, with the same spacing between each word. "My parents go for a walk at eight o'clock, so you can leave before eight."
Lin Feng sat up in bed and buttoned his shirt back up one by one. He stood up, walked barefoot to the wooden floor, and picked up his trousers from the back of a chair at the foot of the bed.
"I'm sorry, Teacher Zhou. I was too impulsive just now." He lowered his head and fastened his belt, the buckle making a soft click as it went through the hole.
Zhou Mei did not answer.
She walked to the window and pulled the curtains open a crack. The streetlights in the neighborhood were on, casting an orange glow on her face, making it impossible to discern any expression.
Lin Feng took a pillow and a thin blanket from the bed and walked to the wooden floor near the bedroom door. He put the pillow down, covered himself with the blanket, and lay down with his back to the bed.
The hard wooden floorboards pressed against his shoulder blades and hips through the blanket. The air conditioner vents were pointing directly at his feet, sending gusts of cold air blowing against his ankles.
I stared at the wall in front of me with my eyes open. The wall was covered with a layer of off-white wallpaper, and I couldn't see any pattern in the dim light.
Zhou Mei lay back on the bed and reached out to turn off the bedside lamp. The bedroom was plunged into darkness, with only a sliver of orange streetlight shining through the gap in the curtains onto the ceiling.
She wasn't angry at Raymond Lam; she was angry at herself. She was the one who kissed him first. She was the one who said, "Consider this today's payment."
She knew perfectly well that he was her student, that he was only a freshman in college and almost ten years younger than her.
I still pressed my lips to it.
The last time she was this proactive was during her senior year. The boy was from the next college; he wore glasses and spoke slowly and deliberately.
Zhou Mei pursued him for three months, and they were together for two months.
Later, she saw him holding hands with another girl at the cafeteria entrance. From then on, Zhou Mei never took the initiative again and never believed in love again.
Graduation, work, living alone, eating alone, shopping alone.
She hasn't seriously met any of the blind dates her mother has introduced her to. She avoids having dinner with colleagues whenever possible…
Until Raymond Lam saved her last time...
For the first time, Zhou Mei felt that getting close to someone might not be so dangerous. But the girl's voice on the phone just now pulled her back to reality.
She pulled the blanket up to cover her ears and bit her lip to force the heat back down.
At 6:30 the next morning, the light coming through the gap in the curtains changed from orange to grayish-white.
Lin Feng opened his eyes; the wooden floorboards were so hard they made half his body numb. He sat up, his shoulders and hips aching slightly. He folded the blanket and placed it next to his pillow, his knees creaking as he stood up.
Zhou Mei lay on her side facing the wall, wrapped tightly in the blanket, with only a small part of the back of her head showing.
Her hair was spread out on the pillow, and her breathing was even.
Lin Feng didn't know if she was really asleep or pretending.
He stood up, put his hand on the doorknob, and glanced back at the bedroom.
Zhou Mei remained lying motionless on her side.
Her lips moved, as if she wanted to say, "Teacher Zhou, I'm leaving." But the sound got stuck in her throat and wouldn't come out.
I opened the door, walked out, and gently closed it behind me. I stood in the hallway for about three or four seconds after the lock clicked shut, then turned and headed towards the elevator.
In the bedroom, Zhou Mei's eyes were open.
Looking at the off-white wallpaper on the wall, with a small raised glue dot on it, and after hearing the sound of the door lock clicking, I pulled the blanket over my head and curled up into a ball.
After lying in bed for about half an hour, I sat up. There were two faint bluish patches under my eyes.
