As the elevator went up, Lin Feng noticed an old photo of BYD from its early days posted in the elevator lobby. The image quality wasn't very clear, and it showed a semi-automatic production line.

Several young people in blue overalls stood in front of the equipment, their expressions serious, almost solemn. A line of small print in the lower right corner of the photo read: "December 15, 2008, China's first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle production line goes into operation."

Lu Jianguo followed his gaze and said, "President Wang is in that photo, the third one from the left in the back row."

Lin Feng took a closer look. The young man in the photo was thin, wearing glasses, with his hands behind his back, standing ramrod straight. Compared to now, the features were still there, but the overall demeanor was completely different.

The elevator doors opened, revealing a dark gray carpet on the sixteenth-floor corridor. A row of photos of BYD's past products hung on the wall, from the earliest nickel-cadmium batteries to the latest blade batteries, arranged in a clear timeline.

The contract room was at the end of the corridor. Two staff members were standing at the door, and they opened the door for Lu Jianguo.

The meeting room wasn't large; a dark solid wood table occupied two-thirds of the room, and four copies of the contract were already laid out on it, each with a gold-embossed cover.

Copies of Shuke and Tianlong's business licenses, letters of authorization, and project filing approval documents were neatly stacked to the side. Wang Fu sat at the other end of the long table, a contract spread out in front of him. He was looking at the last page of terms when he heard the door open, looked up, and took off his glasses, placing them on the table.

"President Lin, please have a seat." He stood up, extended his hand across the table, and shook hands with a firm and decisive grip. "Manager Lu reported the results of the negotiations to me yesterday. I have reviewed the conditions you proposed, and they are very pragmatic."

"Thank you for coming in person, Mr. Wang." Lin Feng sat down opposite him. "This project progressed very quickly from initial intention to signing. BYD's cooperation has exceeded our expectations."

"Good collaborations don't need to drag on." Wang Fu pushed the contract aside and placed his hands on the table, folded over each other. "I've reviewed your project proposal, and the direction is correct. The new energy industry seems booming right now, but there aren't many people who can truly achieve efficiency on the production line. Your willingness to invest in equipment and technology shows that you're aiming for long-term success. This is the most important factor BYD considers when choosing a partner."

The lawyer from the legal department flipped through the four contracts one by one, turning to the signature page and tapping the signature line with his fingertip. Vice President Zhang took out the company seal and inkpad from his briefcase and placed them on the table; the metal seal reflected the cold light from the ceiling lamps.

"The contract is for a five-year term. If both parties have no objections, we can sign it now." The lawyer handed over the pen.

Lin Feng took the pen but didn't sign it immediately.

I went through the contract from beginning to end, focusing on several key clauses: fixed maintenance fee rate, two free technology upgrades, a two-point discount on equipment purchase price, a 40% prepayment ratio, and daily penalty for delayed delivery.

Every single detail is exactly as agreed upon yesterday. The technical appendix contains a densely packed five-page parameter table, with each item accompanied by the signatures of the technical personnel from both sides.

He turned the contract back to the first page and signed his name in the "Party B Representative" column. His handwriting was neat and legible, with no ligatures.

Vice President Zhang signed his name in the authorized representative column next to him. After signing all four contracts, Lin Feng pushed the contracts to Wang Fu across from him.

Wang Fu signed quickly, habitually adding a small backstroke to the last character of his name. After signing, he put the pen cap back on, placed it next to the contract, stood up, and extended his hand again.

"It's a pleasure working with you."

"It's a pleasure working with you."

When their hands were clasped together, the photographer next to them pressed the shutter and took three pictures in a row.

After signing the contract, Wang Fu did not leave immediately.

An assistant handed me a gift box. Inside was a car model and a car key. The logo on the key reflected a silvery-white light under the lamplight; it was the U8.

"This is the new model of the Yangwang, which will be officially launched next month," Wang Fu said. "In the new energy industry, it's unacceptable not to drive an electric car yourself."

"This gift is too much." Lin Feng glanced at the key.

"It's not a big deal." Wang Fu waved his hand. "Your advance payment in one lump sum gives us confidence to start this project. One car is nothing. Once the technical team arrives at the factory, if there are any problems, just contact Lu Jianguo, and he will coordinate."

Lu Jianguo added from the side, "The technical team has been selected. The first batch of fifteen people will all be in place by next Wednesday. As for the equipment production schedule, I have confirmed with the production department that the production line debugging can be carried out simultaneously after the framework of your factory is completed, so it won't delay the process."

"Our infrastructure project will be completed by the end of the month." Vice President Zhang put the contract into his briefcase. "Once the technical team arrives, we'll arrange their accommodation, meals, and office space in advance."

"Then let's proceed as planned." Wang Fu buttoned up his suit jacket, glanced at his watch, and said, "I have a meeting at ten o'clock, so I'll be going now. Mr. Lin, let's keep in touch more often in the future."

After Wang Fu left, Lu Jianguo accompanied Lin Feng and the others to complete the remaining procedures—contract filing, technical attachment archiving, and signing of equipment scheduling confirmation letters. By the time all the documents were processed, it was already 11:30 a.m.

When I walked out of the BYD building, the afternoon sun was shining brightly.

Lin Feng stood on the steps, lit a cigarette, and took a deep drag.

The sense of relief after signing the contract is completely different from the tension at the negotiating table; it's like someone who has been running for a long time has finally crossed a hurdle.

"President Wang personally delivered the car today; that's quite a show of respect," said Vice President Zhang, standing to the side. "Looking up at the U8, the top-of-the-line model only costs a little over a hundred."

"After the car arrives, park it at Hehai," Lin Feng flicked off his cigarette ash. "Once we get back, arrange for the finance department to make the advance payment immediately, don't delay. BYD's technical team will arrive next Wednesday, and we need to prepare all the office space and dormitories before they arrive, so they have a place to stay when they get there."

"I'll make the call this afternoon to arrange it," said Vice President Zhang.

Lin Feng glanced at the calendar on his phone.

They booked a hotel in Suzhou until the day after tomorrow, and the contract has been signed. The rest will have to wait for the technical team to arrive before we can proceed. These two days are a gap.

Vice President Zhang laughed, "Once this notice is sent out, I estimate everyone will have run away within ten minutes."

"Let them have their fun. Things have been tense enough lately." Lin Feng stubbed out his cigarette and threw it in the trash can. "You should go take a look around too. The old town of Suzhou is worth a visit."
