At first, Yun Shengsheng and the other three little ones stood tall and proud, their expressions resolute.

Half an hour later, all four heads drooped down, and they walked away listlessly.

Yun Shengsheng thought she was an adult and that walking this distance would be no problem, but she couldn't handle the first one.

As it turns out, she's only four and a half years old, and her legs really are short—so short that for every step Princess Yongjia and the others take, she has to take one and a half.

While others walk 10,000 steps, she walked the equivalent of 15,000.

Despite it being a bitterly cold winter day, she was sweating profusely, with stray hairs plastered to her forehead.

But everyone was holding their breath, their lips pressed tightly together, not saying a word, just silently walking forward. They didn't know what had happened on the mountain, but they were all on edge, not daring to relax.

After walking for nearly an hour and a half, Yun Shengsheng finally couldn't take it anymore and weakly said something.

"Princess, Brother Linlang, Brother Muyu, shall we... take a short rest?"

As soon as Yun Shengsheng said this, the other three immediately nodded vigorously.

Linlang plopped down on a roadside rock, Muyu leaned against a tree trunk panting, and Yongjia managed to maintain her dignity as a princess by slowly sitting down.

The four little ones found a sheltered spot and huddled together, taking out the biscuits they had bought from the old lady that morning and starting to eat them.

The flatbread was dry and hard, with a burnt smell on the edges. Normally, they wouldn't even give it a second glance. But now, they were chewing on it as if it were some kind of delicacy, not daring to waste a single crumb.

Linlang took a couple of bites, then suddenly stopped, hesitatingly saying, "Let's eat less of these pancakes, and save some. Just in case... just in case..."

He didn't say what he was going to say, but everyone understood.

What if they climb up the mountain and find it's a mess too?

What if there's nothing left on the mountain?

What if this piece of bread is their last remaining food?

No one answered, but everyone silently broke off half of their pancakes, carefully wrapped them up, and stuffed them back into their pockets.

The remaining half was eaten in no time. After finishing, I found a clean piece of snow, put it in my mouth and let it melt slowly, just like drinking water.

After sitting for a quarter of an hour, the cold wind began to seep into their bones, so the four of them got up again and continued walking.

Strangely enough, I was shivering from the cold when I was sitting, but I warmed up and even broke out in a sweat when I walked.

They walked and stopped, from dawn till dusk.

The four of them finally stood on the mountaintop and saw the manor where they had lived for most of the year.

"We've finally arrived!" Mu Yu's eyes lit up, and she was about to run over.

Yun Shengsheng suddenly stopped in her tracks and grabbed Mu Yu.

"Something's wrong, something's very wrong." Her voice was extremely low, her eyes fixed on the dark manor ahead. "Don't go over there yet, observe it first."

Mu Yu was pulled so hard by Yun Shengsheng that she stumbled. Just as she was about to ask what was wrong, she followed Yun Shengsheng's gaze and the words caught in her throat.

Princess Yongjia and Linlang also became nervous, their four pairs of eyes fixed on the gate of the manor.

Although the mountain lodge is usually quiet and deserted, lanterns are hung up as soon as it gets dark.

Even if it wasn't brightly lit, there was still a halo of light, and even standing outside the courtyard wall, you could see a warm glow coming from above.

But now, the entire manor is pitch black, without a single ray of light inside or out.

Like a giant black hole with its mouth agape, it sits silently in the darkness of the mountaintop, looking quite eerie.

Mu Yu shuddered, her voice low: "Could it be... something happened here too?"

Princess Yongjia nodded, "I guess so!"

Linlang nodded, "Yes, something feels really off!"

Yun Shengsheng frowned deeply, her mind racing, and whispered, "I know a dog hole, shall we climb in and take a look?"

She originally wanted to go in and take a look by herself, but everyone had been walking all day and was hungry and tired.

She was afraid that if Princess Yongjia and the others stayed outside for too long, they might accidentally fall asleep and freeze to death.

It's better to go in together. There are many rooms, bedding, and food inside. We can hide anywhere and get through the night safely.

A brief crack appeared in Princess Yongjia's expression.

If word got out that a princess like her crawled through a dog hole, she would never be able to hold her head high in the social circles of the capital again.

But given the current situation, she couldn't afford to be coy. Finally, she gritted her teeth and said, "Okay, where is it? Lead the way."

Princess Yongjia nodded, so Linlang and Muyu naturally followed without saying a word.

Yun Shengsheng led them along the outside of the courtyard wall, tiptoeing around half of it, until they reached the base of the wall.

The withered yellow weeds there grew particularly lush, and dense withered yellow vines hung down from the top of the wall, making it look like an ordinary wall.

Yun Shengsheng squatted down, parted the weeds with both hands, and a small hole was revealed. It seemed that only children could pass through it, and they happened to be children.

Mu Yu couldn't help but widen her eyes: "Sheng Sheng, how did you know there was a hole here?"

Yun Shengsheng scratched his head, sounding a little embarrassed: "When I first arrived, I was bored and wanted to sneak out for a walk. But the gatekeeper remembered me when I tried to go through the back door, so he wouldn't let me out. And then... I discovered this."

"After that, I always went out through this tunnel, and I came back through the same tunnel. Nobody ever noticed."

Princess Yongjia glanced at her, her lips twitched, and she couldn't help but laugh.

Then he bent down and crawled through first. Mu Yu followed, and then Lin Lang.

Yun Shengsheng was the last one, and she didn't forget to cover it up so that passersby wouldn't discover the entrance.

The moment all four people stood still, everyone fell silent.

There wasn't a single ray of light in the vast manor.

There were no human voices, no footsteps, not even birdsong.

Touching the wall to the corridor, passing through the garden, and going past the school where they usually had classes, the martial arts training ground, and the dining hall, all of them were empty.

There were many signs of a struggle on the ground; tables, chairs, and benches were overturned, and there was dried dark red stains on the steps, but there were no bodies, not a single one.

The hearts of the four people plummeted.

Linlang frowned. "This place has been invaded too? But what about Mr. Wen? Mr. Wen is the most powerful person in our Great Xuan Kingdom!"

Princess Yongjia pursed her lips and shook her head: "Don't jump to conclusions without seeing the body. Maybe everything's alright."

Yun Shengsheng nodded: "The princess is right, let's not scare ourselves. There might be something else we don't know about."

She looked around and pointed in one direction: "Let's go and take a look at the eldest grandson of the emperor's courtyard."

The three of them agreed and tiptoed toward Yan Shijin's courtyard.

The courtyard was surprisingly clean, with no signs of a fight or bloodstains, as if nothing had happened.

But it was also empty; they searched inside and out but found nothing.

Finally, Mu Yu pushed open the door to the small kitchen, peeked inside, and let out a suppressed gasp: "There...is still food here!"

"We have food to eat now..."
