Amateur talent show? Top mentors are my students.
Chapter 13 Re-evaluation
The theme song assessment will be conducted via video recording.
At 8:00 AM on the fourth day, all the videos were archived, and the ratings were done in the order they were recorded.
In the mentor's room, five mentors sat around a long table, with a wall of screens directly opposite them, playing the contestants' theme song assessment videos on split screens.
Shen Yiheng sat in the middle, with Xu Shutong and Jin Xian on his left and Zheng Zaiyuan and Zhou Wei on his right.
A thick stack of rating sheets lay on the table, surrounded by piles of mineral water bottles and mugs.
"Next up—Lin Xiaohe, Class C."
Xu Shutong clicked on the video. In the video, a tall, thin boy stood in the center of the practice room, looking as tense as if he were about to be tortured.
The accompaniment begins.
From the very first eight counts, his movements became completely chaotic.
He was flustered and his feet slipped and slid as if they were greased, his center of gravity wavering.
When the chorus came, he simply stood still, his mouth open but no sound coming out.
The video has finished playing.
"..." Jung Jae-won took off his glasses, wiped them, and put them back on. "Is this... dancing?"
"Struggling," Zhou Wei said expressionlessly.
Jin Xian picked up a pen, wrote a word on the evaluation form, and pushed it over for Shen Yiheng next to her to see.
Shen Yiheng looked down and saw—F.
He nodded without saying anything.
They've been watching these videos for almost two hours, from Class A to Class C, they've seen both the good and the bad.
But the bad ones were really bad – some forgot their lines, some forgot their choreography, and some didn't remember anything from the beginning and just stood still the whole time.
It's absolutely astonishing.
"Next up, Li Bufan, Class D."
When Xu Shutong opened the video, the corners of her mouth curved slightly.
She remembered the kid with the dirty orange hair—he forgot his lyrics on his debut stage, his freestyle was a mess, and his talking was much better than his dancing.
The screen lit up, and Li Bufan stood in front of the mirror, taking a deep breath with a rare serious expression.
The music is ringing.
Shen Yiheng raised an eyebrow.
It was much better than he had expected.
Although the floor work in the chorus was still a bit strained, it was much more stable than on his first stage performance. He didn't falter in his singing either, and his breath control was more stable than he had imagined.
"This..." Jung Jae-won tilted his head and looked at it again. "You've made great progress."
"Indeed." Zhou Wei nodded. "Compared to his first stage performance, he's like a completely different person."
"It seems that Class D that day was an accident," Jin Xian added.
Shen Yiheng dragged the progress bar back and watched it again, focusing on the floor movements in the chorus.
The way the force is generated has changed—the center of gravity has shifted from the arm to the palm, and the core is tightly engaged.
This adjustment method...
A thought flashed through his mind, but he didn't say it aloud.
"Give what?" Xu Shutong asked.
"I think it deserves a B," Jung Jae-won said. "There's still room for improvement in the dance, but the overall execution is already quite good."
"Agreed," Zhou Wei nodded.
Jin Xian nodded as well.
Shen Yiheng wrote "B" on the rating sheet, his gaze unconsciously glancing at the daily performance score record book next to Zhou Wei.
Each contestant's daily performance score is randomly assigned by the mentors during practice. The average of the five scores is then combined with the final theme song assessment score for ranking.
Zhou Wei's notebook was open, and Shen Yiheng saw Li Bufan's page—the daily performance score. All four mentors gave him around 7 points, but Zhou Wei's column had a striking number: 9.
According to Zhou Wei's usual practice, this score is too high.
Shen Yiheng raised an eyebrow slightly but said nothing.
Daily performance scores are inherently subjective; some value progress, some value absolute ability, and some value attitude. There is no single standard.
"Next up, Lu Yiming, Class D."
In the video, a round-faced boy wearing glasses stands in front of a mirror, his fingers trembling with nervousness.
When the intro started, he closed his eyes briefly, as if to encourage himself.
His dancing was mediocre; several of his movements were noticeably a beat slow, and his positioning was slightly off.
But the voice was very clean and clear, with a natural quality that had not been trained by professional singing rules.
"Is this kid an amateur?" Jung Jae-won turned to look at Shen Yi-heng.
"Yes, I signed up myself, I don't have a company." Shen Yiheng flipped through the documents.
"You sang well," Zhou Wei commented briefly.
Xu Shutong nodded, then shook her head: "I still need to practice the dance. There are a few movements where the core isn't engaged, and my body is swaying too much."
"Class D, it's already good enough that he can complete the jump completely." Jin Xian rarely spoke, and her tone was gentler than usual. "Besides, look at his daily performance scores from the past two days—he's been practicing until 2 a.m. every day, and he's improving very quickly."
Overall rating: C.
It's not great, but it's already quite impressive for this class.
"Next up, Yang Sheng, Class A."
As the scene changed, Shen Yiheng unconsciously sat up a little straighter.
He was somewhat concerned about the performance of his junior fellow students.
Yang Sheng stood in front of the mirror, his posture upright and his expression calm.
As the music started, his body seemed to come alive, every movement clean and crisp, with just the right amount of force.
The singing was also steady, with plenty of breath support and almost no pitch deviation.
Shen Yiheng looked at the screen, a slight smile playing on his lips.
That was a really good jump.
A.
"Next up, Song Yingwen, Class A."
The video continues playing.
Song Yingwen's style is quite different from Yang Sheng's; it's softer, and his waves are particularly smooth, with excellent body flexibility.
Her singing was a little weaker than Yang Sheng's; the high notes in the chorus were a bit strained, as if she was trying hard to reach that pitch.
However, the overall level of completion is still very high.
"The dance was beautiful," Jung Jae-won commented. "The body lines were excellent, but the vocals need further refinement."
"A." Zhou Wei gave the score directly.
"Next up, Jiang Yang, Class A."
As soon as Jiang Yang came out, Xu Shutong couldn't help but laugh.
The child's line on his first stage performance, "I've been watching you dance since I was little," has become a running joke within the show's production team.
Jiang Yang danced very freely in the video, with larger movements than Yang Sheng and Song Yingwen. His facial expressions were also the best among the three—he danced with a smile, which was very infectious.
However, the singing part was clearly flawed.
"The second line of the chorus is off-key by a half-note." Zhou Wei listened with a frown.
"But he's in a great mood," Xu Shutong said. "He has a strong stage presence, and the audience will appreciate it."
"I give it an A." Jin Xian rarely spoke up. "This child's stage presence is a talent; it can't be developed through training."
"Vocal skills can be improved gradually, but not everyone has the ability to shine in front of the camera."
Shen Yiheng nodded and wrote "A" on the rating sheet.
"These kids who are supporting stars all have very solid basic skills." Jung Jae-won leaned back in his chair, his fingers tapping the table unconsciously. "And have you noticed that their dance moves are remarkably consistent, with a similar core, and their center of gravity is much more stable than others?"
"Indeed." Xu Shutong flipped through the previous scoring records. "Li Bufan from Class D has improved so much, it's because he changed his way of exerting force."
"These guys who recorded together are all better dancers than others, huh? Did they practice in the same studio?" Jung Jae-won asked. He was too busy with work to do much of the inspection.
"They should all have gone to Class A's practice room, where He Xu is helping with the dance," Shen Yiheng explained.
"You mean, He Xu is teaching them?" Zheng Zaiyuan raised an eyebrow. "Isn't he a player himself?"
"It's not uncommon for contestants to teach each other in these kinds of shows," Zhou Wei said, putting down his coffee cup. His voice was as flat as stating a fact. "But how well they teach is another matter entirely."
"How well is the teaching? Just look at Li Bufan's progress and you'll know." Xu Shutong rarely retorted, "He went from a D-level dance to a B-level in just two days—this isn't something he could figure out on his own."
Zhou Wei glanced at her but didn't reply.
"What about He Xu himself?" Jin Xian suddenly asked. "Where is his video scheduled, first or last? Why wasn't he recording with everyone else?"
Xu Shutong looked down and flipped through the order list: "Number 97, probably wanted to practice more, that's why the recording was late."
"Let's keep watching," Shen Yiheng said, steer the conversation back on track. "There are still many contestants to come."
