Nine Netherworld Demon Subduing Record
Chapter 2: The Man in the Mist
The scene was almost bizarre.
All of Fu Qing's previous guesses about his surroundings were shattered in the face of this giant face.
He stopped abruptly, not daring to make any movement, looking like the frozen wooden figure from the childhood game of "Red Light, Green Light."
The man's reddened eyes trembled slightly, and then his entire head shook slightly. Fu Qing immediately sensed something was wrong, and he took a slight step back while gripping the kitchen knife in his hand tightly.
His heart pounded like a drum, his blood rushed to his head, and as the human face swayed, eight long limbs emerged from behind the jaw. Fu Qing could see clearly that the limbs were distinctly human hands, covered in long hair, accompanied by eerie bony protrusions. Upon closer inspection, Fu Qing realized that those were not coarse hairs, but tiny fingers that slowly moved on the limbs. Countless arms combined to form these limbs.
As the movement continued, the human-faced creature slowly turned its back. Only then did Fu Qing realize that the thing that resembled a human face was actually its enormous abdomen. Behind the head, where it had been in the center of the back of the head, a humanoid monster revealed its outline.
The monster's face was bared with fangs, and its huge head was covered with countless eyes that were writhing and locking onto Fu Qing. Its hands were of different sizes; the thicker arm—Fu Qing wasn't sure if it should be called an arm—was something like the forelimb of a praying mantis, while the other arm was shaped like a human hand but covered with bone spurs.
The monster's full appearance suddenly appeared before Fu Qing's eyes; the entire monster resembled a spider.
Fu Qing's mind went blank for a moment, and then he took off running.
He originally thought that at most he would encounter wild beasts like wild boars, and that a kitchen knife might be enough to fight them off. But now, facing this monster that was nearly three meters tall, he could only say that if he didn't run away within three seconds, Fu Qing could only admire him as a true hero.
"What the hell is this thing? A prankster? Who puts this thing in a tourist attraction?" Fu Qing didn't care about anything else. In the blink of an eye, he had already run more than ten meters away.
He turned his head and looked behind him. The thick fog had covered everything, and he could only see a huge black shadow moving around in it. Fu Qing did not dare to delay. At this moment, he realized that the scene in front of him was not the road he had come from. Fu Qing had been observing the situation on both sides of the road. He remembered that the street he came from had red walls and gray tiles on both sides, but now it had turned into white walls and black tiles.
In his hasty escape, he found himself on an unfamiliar street.
At this moment, the outline of the dark figure became increasingly clear in the thick fog behind them.
"Where am I? The underworld?" Fu Qing wondered as he ran. He had initially thought this place was some kind of abandoned scenic area or ancient city, but upon seeing the monster, he realized that it was something that should only appear in the underworld.
"So, am I alive or dead now?" Fu Qing started to have wild thoughts. Just then, he heard a series of crawling sounds behind him. Fu Qing turned his head and saw that the monster was chasing after him at an extremely fast speed. Its densely packed eyes were staring straight at Fu Qing. Its eight legs nimbly climbed on the rubble, much faster than Fu Qing's two legs.
"Brother, I was wrong. I shouldn't have bothered you. Please forgive me. I was just passing by!"
Although Fu Qing didn't expect him to understand, he glanced at the houses on both sides of the road as he ran. But this road was different from the one before. Here, there were high walls on both sides, and the only two gates that looked like mansions were also tightly closed. His heart sank, and at this moment, he heard footsteps behind him almost touching his back.
Turning his head, he saw the monster raise the mantis hook on its right limb. The hook was over two meters long and was poised to attack. Fu Qing knew something was wrong and quickened his pace. Just then, the mantis hook was raised, and Fu Qing felt a cold wind rise behind him, which also made goosebumps appear on his back.
"Squeak!"
The monster, having failed in its attack, let out a sharp cry, a cry like a dagger that pierced Fu Qing's eardrums with pain. At that moment, all eight of its limbs exerted force, and it leaped with all its might. Upon seeing this, Fu Qing's face turned pale. He hurriedly stopped his footwork and jumped to the right rear. The monster pounced straight at him, and the mantis hook grazed past Fu Qing's forearm skin.
Fu Qing hadn't done such strenuous exercise in a long time. Although he dodged the attack, he lost his footing and stumbled several steps before regaining his balance. At that moment, the monster had already turned and was pouncing on Fu Qing.
"Damn it!" Fu Qing felt a blur before his eyes and his blood rushed to his head. At that moment, he felt an excruciating pain in his head as the monster's claws swung up. Fu Qing hurriedly held the kitchen knife in front of him.
The limbs, accompanied by a whistling sound, grew larger and larger in Fu Qing's eyes.
Just then, the monster's body trembled, and its limbs seemed to be subjected to some force, turning away and almost brushing past Fu Qing's neck. Fu Qing felt a cold wind sweep over his body. The monster's attack failed, and it seemed to lose its strength, and all its movements slowed down.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, Fu Qing quickly moved aside. At this moment, the monster staggered to its feet, as if it were bound by something. Seeing this, Fu Qing hurriedly tried to find a way to escape.
"I advise you not to wander off!"
A clear voice rang in Fu Qing's ears. At the same time, a beam of light flashed before Fu Qing's eyes and pierced straight into the stone wall. Fu Qing stopped abruptly. In front of him, an extremely faint thread appeared.
Several footsteps came from the fog. Fu Qing focused his gaze and saw two figures emerge from the fog.
It was a man of similar age to Fu Qing, dressed in a gray robe. This attire surprised Fu Qing, as he had only seen this kind of appearance in some period dramas. His arms were outstretched, and between his index and ring fingers was a yellow wooden plaque that emitted a faint, eerie blue light, exactly the same as the light that had blocked Fu Qing.
Many fine threads emanated from the wooden sign, connecting the spider-like monster; they were almost imperceptible unless one looked closely.
Beside the man was a girl dressed in a white robe. She was about seventeen or eighteen years old, with an ordinary appearance. She had a high ponytail tied behind her head and a somewhat heroic air about her.
The girl held a long sword in her right hand and had her left hand behind her back, watching Fu Qing warily.
"What is this? A special ability?" Fu Qing stared wide-eyed at the man's fingertips. With the strength of two fingers, he was able to pull up a giant monster that was three meters tall. This was a skill that no normal human could possess.
Moreover, seeing the attire of these two, Fu Qing felt as if he had traveled to ancient times. Perhaps only martial arts could explain the current situation.
But Fu Qing also understood that if it weren't for these two, the monster would have succeeded. He held the knife in front of him with both hands and said, "Thank you both for saving me."
The man didn't respond to his words, but nodded to the girl beside him. The girl understood, sheathed her sword, and extended her left hand. Fu Qing saw that the girl's left hand seemed to be formed from smoke, condensing into a purple palm shape. She aimed her palm at the giant monster, and wisps of smoke flew out of her hand, completely enveloping the monster. After about three breaths, she withdrew her hand. At this time, the smoke around the monster dissipated, and the numerous eyes on the monster's face closed simultaneously. The red light in the eyes of the giant human face behind it also dimmed. The monster seemed to be hypnotized, with only its limbs twitching occasionally.
The man raised his hand, and the yellow token in his hand flew straight into the air, carrying thin strands. The yellow wooden token stopped in mid-air, making the strands taut. Only then could Fu Qing see what the yellow token was. It looked like a Taoist talisman, except that it had blue engravings on it and was emitting an eerie blue light.
"These two, could they be Taoist priests who came here specifically to exorcise ghosts?" Upon seeing this special ability, Fu Qing's mouth gaped open, his heart filled with utter shock.
He knew that in some myths and legends, especially in Taoist legends, there were Taoist priests who were specifically responsible for catching ghosts and subduing demons. Seeing that the two were wearing these clothes, he naturally assumed that they were some kind of hermit masters.
Just as he was about to step forward to thank the two men in person, the man suddenly frowned and snapped, "Don't move!"
He placed his right hand in front of his chest, as if about to cast a spell. The girl also raised her long sword, pointing it directly at Fu Qing, and frowned slightly.
Seeing the strange behavior of the two, Fu Qing suddenly stopped. Although he did not know why they were acting this way, he knew that if he continued to move forward rashly, he would suffer the same fate as these monsters.
With utter helplessness, he raised his hands and said weakly, "My two esteemed masters, I am a good person."
