The Secret of Second Marriage

Chapter 35 Green Tea Granny

My husband is suddenly being so attentive to me because he's taking me out to his company's annual party.

I heard he's about to get a promotion and a raise.

The rumors about him and his mistress at the company had been rampant and had a significant impact on his reputation.

The reason he wanted to take me to the annual meeting was to leave an impression on the leaders as a good man who loves his wife, can admit his mistakes, and cares about his family.

But I no longer want to play along with him.

He's already introduced his mistress to his parents; his character is so awful, why should I continue to play along with his act?

I thought for a moment and said, "Honey, I've been on a business trip these past few days and I'm feeling a bit unwell due to the change in environment. I probably won't be able to attend your company's annual party."

My husband said, "Honey, are you feeling unwell? I'll leave work early today to keep you company."

"No"

After I finished speaking, I hung up the phone very coldly.

In the evening, the nanny, Sister Juan, prepared a sumptuous dinner.

My daughter and I ate at Sister Juan's house before going home.

When I got back, my husband was already home.

When my mother-in-law saw my husband come home, she wanted to call him into her room and talk badly about me.

But my husband doesn't seem to want to talk to his mother.

My husband appears to be extremely filial, but deep down he is dissatisfied with my parents-in-law.

Because my in-laws have always favored my husband's younger brother since he was a child.

I took my daughter back to the room to give her a bath and put her to bed.

But when I opened the door to the children's room, I found that my daughter's bed had been taken over by my sister-in-law's two children.

My face turned completely black.

This time I was really angry.

I am not as weak as I used to be.

My husband and I are not divorced yet, but my mother-in-law has blatantly moved into our house. She doesn't respect me as her daughter-in-law at all. Is it because I've been too polite to them all these years?

In my heart, my daughter is the apple of my eye.

You can bully me, but you can't bully my daughter!

I went back to the bedroom, slammed the door shut, and started arguing with my husband.

I said, "What does your mother mean? She's just here to treat the old man, that's all. Bringing your brother's two children here, are you trying to usurp their place?"

My husband, as always, tried to smooth things over, saying, "Honey, calm down. That's not what my mom meant. She's just a country girl, not very educated, and a bit gossipy. Don't take it to heart."

"My daughter is my bottom line. The children's room is the one I decorated and prepared for my daughter. Why did your mother let your brother's two children move in without even saying a word?"

She even packed up my daughter's things and put them aside. Did she not respect me as the lady of the house?

In the past, considering our marital relationship, no matter how outrageous your mother's actions were, I never confronted her directly. But this time, I'm really angry!

I said with a cold face.

My husband was taken aback for a moment, then came over to coax me: "Honey, we're all family, don't be so stingy. How about our daughter comes to sleep with us tonight? As for my brother and sister-in-law, don't worry. They'll move out once they find jobs."

"You mean? If they can't find work, they'll just live in our house for the rest of their lives?"

I said angrily.

Just then, my mother-in-law heard us arguing.

She pretended to walk over and knock on the door, then said gloatingly from outside, "What's all the noise about so late at night? Aren't you afraid people will hear and laugh at you?"

This was said to me.

I've been married into their family for 10 years. For the sake of so-called family harmony, I wanted to be a virtuous wife and loving mother, and not put my husband in a difficult position, so I endured it again and again.

But my mother-in-law gradually took advantage of me. This time, my own soft heart was partly the reason, but more importantly, it was my husband's indulgence.

My expression immediately turned sour.

I didn't want to argue with my husband. Instead, I kicked the door open and said to my mother-in-law, who was eavesdropping at the door, "Heh, I'm not afraid of being laughed at. Let whoever wants to watch, watch all they want. Anyway, I'm not the one who's embarrassed."

My mother-in-law never expected that I would actually lose my temper with her.

She immediately sat on the ground, crying and making a scene, pounding her chest and stamping her feet. She shouted at the top of her lungs, just like a rural auntie: "What kind of daughter-in-law is so disrespectful to her mother-in-law, yelling at her like that? She's a college student, and she has no manners at all."

When I heard this, I just found it laughable.

Seeing my mother-in-law's reaction, my father-in-law also came out to scold me: "Why are you arguing so much among your family? And you're even a daughter-in-law! They say the eldest sister-in-law is like a mother, and the eldest brother is like a father. What's wrong with you helping the second brother? You've made something of yourself, yet you don't care about your siblings. How can you be so selfish?"

The mother-in-law wailed and cried, "I'm the one who resents having a single meal or a sip of water at their house. They'd rather I, their mother-in-law, die today so they, their daughter-in-law, can be satisfied. Fine, I'll just die!"

She was about to grab the clothesline and tie it around her neck, looking like she was trying to kill herself. It was really disgusting to watch.

My husband hurriedly and frantically pulled his mother up from the ground and sent her back to her room.

My daughter was so frightened by what she saw that she started crying loudly.

The living room was a complete mess.

My younger brother and sister-in-law came over to see what was going on.

My husband calmed his mother down, pulled her hand, and sat her down on the sofa. He turned back and glared at me: "Are you satisfied now? You've caused a death in this family. Only then do you feel relieved! Jiang Man, how could you do this?"

This scene is all too familiar to me.

Whenever we have a little money, my mother-in-law comes to borrow it.

If my husband doesn't agree, my mother-in-law will act like she's about to die, just like she is now.

I used to think my husband had it tough. His mother didn't love him at all; she just kept taking from him and only favored her second child.

But now I only feel sorry for myself because it's not easy.

I've been trapped in this marriage, in this unhealthy mother-in-law/daughter-in-law relationship, for so long. My husband doesn't deserve my love, nor does he deserve all the suffering I've endured in this family!

I gritted my teeth, looked at my husband, and said, "You choose between me and your mother, or we're getting a divorce."

"Stop threatening my son with divorce all the time. My son has such a good job, and what about you? A haggard old woman. If he gets divorced, he can find someone better than you right away. Do you believe me?"

My mother-in-law said it very arrogantly.

I looked firmly into my husband's eyes and asked him again, "We've been married for 10 years, who will you choose, me or your mother?"

My husband lowered his head and refused to speak.

I suddenly laughed sadly, tears welling up in my eyes.

It wasn't until this moment that I realized I had lost completely.

My husband says he loves me, but in reality, every time I have a conflict with his mother, he just tells me to be patient and give in.

Looking at my husband is like looking at a moldy cake.

It has a delicate appearance but is highly poisonous.

This is my married life.

I gave a bitter laugh and said, "Fine. Let's get a divorce then. I'll wait for you to marry someone new, and I'll wait to see what kind of retribution you and your mother will get."

After I finished speaking, I went back to pack my luggage, stored my jewelry box and safe, stuffed all the valuables into my suitcase, and left with my daughter's and my clothes and some daily necessities.

As I walked into the living room, holding my daughter's hand and dragging my suitcase, my mother-in-law suddenly rushed out and stopped me from leaving.

I asked her what she really wanted to do.

The mother-in-law said impatiently, "You can leave, but all your things belong to my son. You can't take them! If you really want to leave, then leave with nothing. Open your suitcase and let us check it."

I suddenly realized that they had wanted to get rid of me for a long time.

I glanced back at my husband: "We're husband and wife, is it really necessary for you to make your mother go to this extent?"

My husband remained silent for a long time before finally exploding.

He said, "You never say a good word about my mother. How can she like a daughter-in-law like you? Why can't you learn from other wives, be filial to your elders, and treat my mother better? Why do you always have to argue over trivial things?"

"So that's what you thought of me."

I am extremely disappointed.

My mind was in complete chaos, and I only had one thought at that moment.

I won't let my husband get away with this.

I lost control of my emotions and we started arguing. "I was this kind of person when I was with you! If you think I'm not filial to your parents, then you shouldn't have married me in the first place."

My husband said, "I just want you to get along well with my mom. It wasn't easy for her to raise me. Why can't you understand me?"

I understand you, but who understands me?

I have so much to say to my husband, but when it comes to the point of speaking, I don't want to say anything at all.

When I first got together with him, he was penniless. His parents only favored their second son and never prepared a dowry or a wedding house for him.

Because of his postgraduate entrance exam tuition fees, his parents made excuses, saying they were ill and couldn't earn money to help him, leaving him to rely on himself.

I was so good to him. Back then, when we were dating, I would use my own living expenses to buy meat at the cafeteria and share it with him... I didn't mind that he was poor, but today he complains that I'm not filial.

I was utterly desperate and completely disillusioned with this man.

They outnumbered me and I couldn't beat them.

I called the police immediately.

Twenty minutes later, the police arrived at the scene.

What I found particularly ridiculous was that after the police arrived, my in-laws, who had been so aggressive and arrogant, suddenly started acting pitiful.

The mother-in-law cried, tears streaming down her face, saying, "We've been so good to her. She doesn't have to do anything after marrying into our family. My son gives her tens of thousands of yuan a month for living expenses so she can live in such a nice house, and she's still not satisfied. She wants to kick us old folks out every day. I really have no one to confide in about my suffering."
