From Alchemy Apprentice to All-Powerful God King
Chapter 54 The Vanished Grace
"Wait a moment!"
Just as Matthew was about to leap across the pool to explore the other side, Grace suddenly called out to him from behind.
"Holly, you should go with Matthew. It'll be safer for the two of you."
Following Grace's suggestion.
Matthew and Holly both rejected the proposal.
"No!"
"Can't!"
The former was worried that his plan to sneak in and take advantage of others would be exposed, while the latter was concerned about Grace being alone there by herself.
"I disagree too! Brother Ma, how can you leave me behind and go in alone? Have you forgotten what my uncle said?!"
Luca also spoke up to stop them.
It's not that I'm really worried about Matthew; after spending so much time with him, something must be fishy if things are acting strangely.
He mainly wanted to go in and take a look.
For a moment, the four of them were frozen in place, unsure whether to leave or stay.
"How about this, go down and inform them to stay put, then we'll go together so we can look out for each other."
Grace seemed to have mustered up immense courage, took a deep breath, and uttered those words.
Ten minutes later, the four people appeared on the other side of the pool.
The situation here is far more dire than what they saw on the other side.
Various kinds of strange beast corpses and the remains of demonic insects.
But Matthew was puzzled by the few human corpses he found.
Could it be that those people by the pool fought their way out and finally died from exhaustion?
But this doesn't make sense. To be able to fight one's way through so many strange beasts, one must be at least a second-tier ability user. It's unlikely that one would be exhausted.
"Be careful, something's wrong up ahead!"
Holly suddenly spoke up to warn Grace and shielded her behind her.
Upon hearing this, Luca also hid behind Matthew, tugging at his clothes.
"Tsk, are you even a man?"
Matthew rolled his eyes. He was supposed to be an ability user, yet he didn't even dare to walk.
"You're the eldest brother, you go first, I'll cover you from behind."
Luca wasn't embarrassed at all; after all, his abilities leaned towards healing anyway. He just chuckled to cover up his awkwardness.
The four of them, two in front and two behind, followed the blood trail until they passed through a dense forest, where a small village suddenly appeared before them.
"It's an indigenous tribe."
Holly, with her years of experience traveling with caravans, recognized him at a glance.
These indigenous tribes generally have little contact with the outside world because of their remote location; they usually only trade with caravans.
Especially near the border, there is one every few dozen miles.
Matthew and Luca listened to the explanation and suddenly realized what was going on. They were also surprised that they hadn't known this even though they lived in a small border town.
But the houses built of wood, thatch, and mud were now either collapsed or crumbled, leaving the place in complete disarray.
Apart from the corpses scattered all over the ground, not a single living creature was seen.
"What exactly happened here?"
Looking at the scene before him, which could be described as a large-scale massacre, Matthew's heart sank.
"It's highly likely that it's been invaded by alien beasts. If you travel outside all year round, you'll encounter this situation as well; it's not unusual."
Holly explained that, clearly, she was used to this situation.
Grace nodded in agreement, her expression not looking too good: "That's true."
However, Matthew secretly activated the ability to do a good deed every day, constantly observing the luck above the heads of the group.
"The white mist is thick; it seems there really is something good here," Matthew thought to himself.
But at the same time, he was also puzzled, as he saw no possibility of finding anything good in the current situation.
"Let's search quickly, just in case there are still survivors," Grace urged Holly.
The four split up into two groups and began exploring the tribe on their own.
After lifting a wooden door buried under rubble, Matthew walked through the passage.
In the dim environment, there was a faint smell of blood. With a snap of his fingers, a spark ignited the torch in his hand, illuminating the dried bloodstains on the ground.
"Brother Ma, it must have been quite a while, right?"
Luca followed behind, also lighting a torch in his hand, and began to wander around the house.
Matthew crouched down and inserted his fingers into the soil. The ground beneath his fingers was still soft and soaked with blood, and because the space was enclosed, the bloodstains had not completely dried.
"It should be no more than a week."
However, before he could investigate further, he heard Luca's panicked shouts coming from inside the room, as he pointed to the ceiling.
"Brother Ma... Brother Ma... up there."
Matthew sensed something was wrong. As his magic began to build up, he looked up.
As the view shifts, two headless corpses hang from the roof, and above them, a giant bat pierces their chests with its wings, greedily absorbing the last drop of blood from their bodies.
Seeing this scene, he finally understood why there was so much blood on the ground.
The next moment, the knight's greatsword silently appeared in Matthew's hand, and at the same time, magic burst forth and he disappeared from the spot.
With a thud, the greatsword pierced the bat's head, giving it no time to react. The bat crashed to the ground, carrying two corpses with it.
"A mere beast, not even a second-tier one, and you're this scared?" After chopping off the bat's head with his cleaver, Ma put away his greatsword and looked at Luca with some disdain.
"Who said that! I'm just reminding you, so as not to wake it up and cause a big commotion." Luca remained stubborn.
Matthew checked the room and, finding no other bat, dragged the one outside.
Grace and Holly also dragged a strange beast out of the house, but it was a bizarre creature that looked like a wolfhound.
"Where do you have it too?"
Both of them looked at this scene and spoke up in surprise at the same time.
However, after they disposed of the corpses, they discovered that there were no demonic insects inside these strange beasts.
"This must be due to the influence of demonic insects, which controlled the attack on this tribe, and the demonic insects within the body immediately detached from them."
Holly offered her analysis first, but Matthew raised his own questions.
"Then why are the demonic insects still alive after they leave? And why are they continuing to feed on flesh and blood here?"
"this......"
Holly couldn't answer this question right away, as she had never seen anything like it in all her years of traveling.
It is important to understand that this applies to humans, mythical beasts, and other creatures.
Once you symbiotically coexist with the demonic insects, the only outcome is death.
However, in this tribe, they found five or six strange beasts that were still alive but did not have demonic insects inside them, which was very illogical.
Just as the group fell silent, Luca, as if he had just thought of something, spoke up.
"I remember now, this is the Bloodstained Calamity!"
Immediately, Matthew and Holly turned to look at him at almost the same time, waiting for what he would say next.
However, before Luca could speak again, Matthew's Chronicle of Another World turned the pages on its own, as if to remind him.
After sensing a magical power that did not belong to the four of them, Matthew turned around abruptly.
But they discovered that Grace, who had been standing behind them, had disappeared.
