Chapter 21 Club Recruitment
When he was editing a journal in his first year of high school, the president of the literary society contacted him through the confession wall and wanted to include his work in it. Li Mubai thought it would be good publicity, so he agreed. He still hoped that his work would be recognized.
How is it? How should I answer this? Should I say it's bad, or good, or compromise? It seems rather strange to evaluate my own work.
Should we pass the ball back to Xie Shu? He tried to open his mouth, but it felt a little stuck in his throat.
Sigh, let's change the subject.
"Is this one from our literary society?" Li Mubai asked.
Xie Shu didn't answer, but he could hear her soft breathing. Li Mubai turned to look at her. They were only thirty centimeters apart, but he saw a small curve at the corner of her mouth, like a crescent moon falling into a deep pool. He immediately looked away, feeling his face burning.
Why was Xie Shu laughing? She looked so beautiful when she laughed. These two thoughts filled Li Mubai's mind.
Fortunately, the setting sun's rays redeemed him, and the school bell rang, rescuing him from the awkward atmosphere.
He calmed himself down and prepared to "welcome guests".
"What do you want to eat?" Xie Shu asked.
Li Mubai then realized that there was no time for dinner when he was working.
"Class monitor, go eat. I'll go to the convenience store to buy some bread after I'm done." Li Mubai didn't know if Xie Shu would come back, but he was the only one on the duty roster.
Xie Shu did not leave immediately after hearing this, but thought for a few seconds before getting up and going to the cafeteria.
With Xie Shu gone, Li Mubai felt a significant reduction in the pressure he was under.
The first-year high school students are still eating in the cafeteria and will be able to come after they finish eating.
Two rows of tents were set up on the playground. The Literature Club was at the very edge, practically a roadside stall. To the left was the Chess Club, and opposite was the Art Club. Li Mubai remembered that Chen Qiuhe was in the Art Club. He wondered if she would come to recruit new members. The Math Club had the most applicants, since sometimes the club teachers would give extra tutoring to the members to improve their math scores.
"Wow!"
Suddenly, shouts erupted on the playground. Li Mubai looked in the direction of the sound and saw that the Hanfu Club members had arrived dressed in Hanfu.
It seems that Hanfu is only suitable for girls to wear in modern times; if boys wear it, they look like eunuchs.
Li Mubai was uninterested and not interested in the club's recruitment methods. He picked up the issue that Xie Shu had just been reading. He hadn't received a sample copy when it was distributed. Each class would receive a copy of this publication. Li Mubai hadn't even had a chance to read this issue before someone took it and disappeared.
He first turned to the volume of ancient poems to see how many of his poems were included.
Then, curiosity arose that he wondered if Xie Shu had written any works. He flipped back to the table of contents and checked them one by one. Finally, he found Xie Shu's name in the new poetry section. The title of the poem was very simple—"Snowman".
"Oh, what a coincidence! What are you doing?"
Li Mubai closed the magazine and looked up to see Chen Qiuhe.
"Are you here to recruit new members for the art club?"
"That's right, the president is incompetent; he assigned me to recruit new members." Chen Qiuhe said as she pulled out a chair next to her and sat down.
She took the magazine Li Mubai had just been looking at, flipped through the table of contents, and asked, "Your name isn't on it. What's your pen name?"
"I have no works." Facing Chen Qiuhe, Li Mubai could say this against his conscience with a calm expression.
"No work to show? So you're just a slacker."
Hehe, revealing my name will give you a shock.
"Your club has some business." Li Mubai saw a girl come into the art club's shed across the street.
"That's our editor-in-chief, I'm going back now." Chen Qiuhe dropped the magazine and ran back to the other side.
Li Mubai silently packed up the publications. By this time, some students had arrived. They wandered around looking for their favorite clubs. Most of them didn't even get close to the literary club's shed before turning around and leaving.
"Senior, is this the Literature Club?" a female student asked as she walked over with another female student whose head was turned away.
No, if you read from right to left, this is a social studies text.
"Yes, these are our club members' works. You can take a look." Li Mubai took out two more sheets of paper from the table and said, "These are two application forms. If you are interested, you can take them back and fill them out. The club will hold an interview next Wednesday."
"Okay, thank you, senior." The other person didn't leave immediately after taking the form, but instead said, "Senior, could you please provide your contact information?"
...I never imagined that one day I would be asked for my contact information.
Just as Li Mubai was pondering how to refuse, Xie Shu returned.
"Are you two junior girls going to join a club?" Her tone remained cold.
The junior student, who had been looking away, muttered something to herself, and then the two of them left.
Xie Shu looked at Li Mubai with a puzzled expression.
"Yes, I've already given them the watch," Li Mubai replied.
"Oh." Xie Shu thought he had scared the person away.
She placed a boxed lunch on Li Mubai's table and then sat back down in her chair.
"Eat quickly, it'll get cold soon."
"...Thank you, class monitor." The food was already placed in front of me, almost ready to be eaten, so it seemed inappropriate to say I didn't need it now.
Xie Shu also made himself a serving, opened the plastic lid, and ate it in small bites.
Li Mubai opened his portion, which contained braised pork, Mapo tofu, broccoli, and stir-fried cabbage; it didn't look like something a student would eat.
He ate very carefully to avoid spilling a single drop of oil on the publications or school newspaper.
"Xie Shu." A voice called out from the other side. Li Mubai looked up and saw Chen Qiuhe waving and greeting Xie Shu.
Xie Shu nodded slightly.
Chen Qiuhe seems to have a pretty good relationship with Xie Shu.
Li Mubai quickly finished eating, since eating at the club's recruitment site would damage the club's image. He cleaned up his and Xie Shu's lunchboxes and threw them into the trash can.
By this time, most of the students had finished dinner and arrived at the playground. After throwing away the trash, Li Mubai noticed that quite a few junior students had gathered in front of the literary society's tent. Indeed, good wine needs no bush, and beauty needs no remote location.
Xie Shu was handing out registration forms when Li Mubai jogged back to help. Luckily, they had printed thirty forms, and once they finished distributing them, they could pack up and "go home."
"Thank you, class monitor. It was supposed to be my job, but I'm sorry to bother you." After handing out this round of registration forms, Li Mubai looked at the ten forms left and thanked them. If he had been the only one handing out the forms today, it might have taken a long time to finish.
"It's alright, I'm the president anyway."
A number of people from the art club across the street had also arrived. The art club was displaying the members' paintings, which were all hung up. Li Mubai wanted to see if there was any of Chen Qiuhe's paintings, but he was nearsighted and didn't wear glasses, so he couldn't see them clearly.
Suddenly remembering something, Li Mubai didn't look at Xie Shu, but instead mustered his courage and asked, "Class monitor, was that Snickers bar from last time still okay?"
Xie Shu's voice didn't come immediately; it took about three seconds before he said, "It's alright, but it's too sweet."
Is it too sweet?
