"Teacher! This student seems to have a fever, please come and take a look!"

The school doctor jumped up from his chair, quickly walked around the desk, and his gaze fell on the girl with her head down on Li Mubai's back.

"Put her on the chair first, be careful."

Li Mubai bent down, and the school doctor helped him up. Together, they carefully placed Xie Shu on the examination chair.

Her head was tilted to one side; she didn't even have the strength to lift it.

"Go to the desk and get the thermometer from the middle drawer," the school doctor said, while reaching out to support Xie Shu's shoulder to prevent her from falling to one side.

"Okay." Li Mubai turned around and took a step, but his fingers were pulled by a very light force. Xie Shu's fingers hooked around his little finger.

She kept her eyes closed, her lips moved, but she didn't say anything.

The school doctor's brow twitched slightly, but in the end he said nothing, stood up and went to get the thermometer.

"It's alright, Xie Shu. It's probably just a common fever, and you'll be fine soon." Li Mubai squatted down and placed his other hand on the back of her hand.

"Hmm..." she responded softly, like a sigh.

"Clip this in place." The school doctor walked over and gently placed the thermometer under Xie Shu's armpit. "Take it out in five minutes."

Li Mubai squatted down beside her, holding her hand the whole time. Her hand was cold, and her fingertips were slightly curled.

"Is there anything else that's bothering you?" the school doctor asked.

Xie Shu didn't speak, but his lips moved slightly.

Li Mubai answered for her: "She has no strength in her limbs, can't walk, and is extremely weak."

"Anything else?"

"Chest pain," Xie Shu uttered.

The more the school doctor listened, the more his brow furrowed...

Five minutes later, she took out the thermometer, and Li Mubai looked at it.

"38.5, that's a moderate fever. Considering your current symptoms, it might not be a normal fever. I suggest you go to the hospital for further examination."

"Send her to the hospital?" Li Mubai's voice tightened. He looked at Xie Shu, who nodded almost imperceptibly.

"Excuse me, which class are you in? What are your names? I'll call your homeroom teacher first."

"She's from Class 3, her name is Xie Shu, and mine is Li Mubai."

The school doctor opened the phone book, found Wu Changguo's number, and dialed it.

"Hello, is this Teacher Wu? Well, it's like this, Xie Shu, a student in your class, is sick. It might not be a fever; it would be best to take him to the hospital..."

Xie Shu's brows remained furrowed. Li Mubai took out a tissue and gently wiped away the fine beads of sweat that had seeped from Xie Shu's forehead.

"Ahem!" She coughed lightly twice.

"Alright, your teacher Wu will be here shortly."

"Okay, thank you, teacher."

Less than three minutes later, Wu Changguo appeared at the door, his coat zipper still undone, clearly having run there.

"My car is downstairs, Teacher Yan, please help me get her into the car! I'll drive her to the hospital!" Wu Changguo's tone was much more urgent than usual.

"It's too difficult for me to handle by myself, so I asked this classmate for help. He's the one who carried the person over, so I asked him to carry the person over again."

Wu Changguo glanced at Li Mubai squatting beside him, his gaze lingered for a moment, and finally he nodded.

At this point, there was no time to worry about whether it was early romance or not; getting the person to the hospital was the priority.

Li Mubai carried Xie Shu on his back as before, with Wu Changguo leading the way. The three of them walked through the corridor, pushed open the building door, and were greeted by a cold wind that made the hem of his coat flutter backward.

"Be careful not to bump your head." Wu Changguo opened the back door of the car, and Li Mubai turned to the side and slowly put Xie Shu in, then helped her head to avoid the door frame.

Wu Changguo closed the car door, quickly walked around the front of the car, and got into the driver's seat.

Standing beside the car, Li Mubai caught his breath and asked, "Teacher Wu, can I come along?"

Wu Changguo, gripping the steering wheel, glanced back at him, his brow still furrowed, and after a few seconds gave a brief reply: "Get in the car."

Li Mubai immediately went around to the other side, opened the car door, and got in.

The car started, the engine hummed as it drove out of the school gate, streetlights gliding past the window one by one, and the only sounds inside the car were the air conditioning and the occasional tires rolling over the road.

"When did Xie Shu start feeling unwell?" Wu Changguo asked.

"Tonight," Li Mubai said, his fingers clenched tightly, his knuckles turning slightly white.

"I've already contacted her parents, but it'll take them a while to get here." Wu Changguo paused. "When they arrive, just tell them I asked you to come help, understand?"

Li Mubai was taken aback, not quite understanding the meaning behind Wu Changguo's special instruction, but he still nodded: "...Understood."

As the car rounded a bend, Xie Shu's head tilted weakly to the side and rested gently on his shoulder.

Her breathing was shallow, and you could feel it was uneven even through her coat.

Li Mubai sat stiffly, unsure whether to straighten her up or leave her motionless.

He struggled internally for a moment, then glanced furtively at the rearview mirror. Wu Changguo's gaze remained fixed on the front, as if he hadn't noticed anything amiss in the back. He breathed a sigh of relief, but quickly tensed up again.

"You support her from behind," Wu Changguo suddenly said. "There are a few bends ahead, don't let her sway from side to side."

"Okay." Li Mubai moved closer, his right hand reaching around to put his arm around her shoulder, his movements a little stiff.

"arrive."

The moment the car came to a complete stop, Li Mubai let go of Xie Shu's hand and got out of the car. He then went around to the other side, opened the car door, and carefully helped Xie Shu out.

Wu Changguo had already walked ahead, and looked back: "Carry her on your back and walk faster."

"OK."

Without further hesitation, Li Mubai bent down, picked Xie Shu up, and strode towards the emergency room.

The hospital was still brightly lit at nine o'clock, with people coming and going in the corridors. The smell of disinfectant filled the air, and the white lights made the ground shine, making people feel a little dizzy.

"I feel dizzy..." Xie Shu mumbled.

"It's alright, Xie Shu, we're already at the hospital." Li Mubai didn't stop walking.

Her arms went completely limp, and Li Mubai's heart tightened instantly.

"Xie Shu, Xie Shu," he called softly as he walked, but Xie Shu did not respond.

"Hello! We have a patient here with a high fever who is unconscious. Which department should we go to?"

"High fever and unconscious?" The nurse looked up at Xie Shu on Li Mubai's back. "It's serious. He needs to be taken to the emergency room. Are you family members?"

"No, I'm her teacher, and this boy is her classmate. We've already contacted her family, but it will take them more than ten minutes to get here. It's a matter of life and death, so let's get the child to the emergency room first!" Wu Changguo's tone became urgent.

"Okay, please register here. I'll contact the doctor now."

A few minutes later, a stretcher was pushed over.

The doctor, wearing a mask, glanced at Xie Shu's face and gestured with his chin towards Li Mubai: "Put her up here."

Li Mubai bent down and carefully placed Xie Shu on the stretcher, supporting her head as he slowly lowered her down.

Her brows seemed to relax a little more than before, but her face was even paler, and a thin layer of sweat appeared on her forehead.

The nurse pushed the cart and turned to walk towards the emergency room, with Li Mubai and Wu Changguo following behind.

The emergency room door slid open and closed automatically, keeping them outside.

Li Mubai watched through the glass window as the cart walked further and further away, finally disappearing behind a door at the end of the corridor. He stood by the window, motionless for a long time.

"Teacher Wu, Xie Shu... he should be alright, right..." His voice was a little dry.

Things had gone far beyond his expectations. At first, he thought it was just a common cold, then he thought it was just a common fever, and now, Xie Shu, who was unconscious, was being rushed into the emergency room, his condition unknown.

"Let's sit outside and wait. It should be fine." Wu Changguo sat down on the chair next to him.

Li Mubai didn't sit down; he stood at the entrance of the emergency room, staring at the closed door.

Time seemed to move very slowly, each minute stretching out several times over. He began pacing back and forth in the corridor, like a bird that never tires of circling.

Ding.

The elevator doors opened not far away, followed by the sound of very hurried leather shoes.

"Where's the little book!"
