Chapter 186 A Day Trip to the Small Town!
It drizzled a little this morning.
It fell onto the stone slabs of the courtyard and left a layer of water stains.
Niannian stood under the eaves, reaching out to catch the rain.
"This rain won't last long; it'll stop soon."
"Where are we going today?" Xiao Jin asked, squatting on the doorstep tying her shoelaces.
After thinking for a moment, Niannian said, "Let's take a car to a place further away."
On the map I looked at yesterday, there was a small town to the west, but it was said to be an old town, as the houses still retained their original appearance.
She looked up at the sky: "I'll leave once the rain stops."
The rain stopped quickly, in less than 15 minutes.
The ground was damp, and the air smelled of moisture; it was a bit cooler than a couple of days ago.
Niannian locked the door and took the people to the station.
The station wasn't very big, and there were only a few people in front of the ticket window.
Niannian bought seven tickets. Since there was still a while before departure, the group sat on the metal chairs in the waiting room.
Luo Nannan sat by the window, watching the raindrops slide down the glass.
She reached out and drew a line on the glass, and the watermark veered off course in the direction she drew.
The vehicle arrived on time; it was a minibus.
Niannian chose a seat towards the back, Luo Nannan sat next to her, and Xiaoxiao sat on the other side of the aisle.
Xiao Jin and Qi Qi sat in the front row. As soon as Qi Qi got in the car, she started looking out the window. Before the car even moved, she was already peering out the window.
After the car drove out of the city, fields came into view outside the window. Some fields were planted with rice, some with vegetables, and some were empty and overgrown with weeds.
A breeze blew in through the half-open window, carrying the smell of damp earth.
Luo Nannan leaned against the window, watching the scenery move by outside.
She had seen celestial spirit ships soaring high above the clouds, and witnessed the world at that speed become blurry dots.
The car was driving very slowly, and everything—the paddy field ridges, the ponds, the utility poles, and the poplar trees along the roadside—was clearly visible.
As I passed by a lotus pond, large lotus leaves floated on the water, along with some blooming lotus flowers, their pink and white hues mixed together.
Qiqi leaned against the window and called out "Lotus" quite loudly. Someone in the row in front of her turned around and glanced at her, and she shrank back.
Luo Nannan also saw the lotus pond. The lotus flowers swayed slightly in the wind, and there were water droplets on the petals, probably because the rainwater had not yet dried.
She looked at it for a while, then turned to Niannian and said, "That flower is quite big."
"Those are lotus flowers," Niannian said. "They bloom in summer and wither in autumn."
Luo Nannan nodded and then turned her gaze back to the window.
The car traveled for about half an hour before stopping at the entrance of a town.
Niannian got out of the car first, stood on the stone steps by the roadside and looked around to confirm that the location was roughly the same as on the map.
The town is small, with some shops along the main road selling groceries, farm tools, and pastries. The signs are quite old, with handwritten characters painted on wooden boards and hung above the entrances.
"Let's walk around first," Niannian said.
The main road is not long; it's about a mile from one end to the other.
Luo Nannan walked along the side and stopped briefly when she passed a blacksmith shop.
The sound of hammering came from the shop. An old man with his shirt off was hammering a red-hot iron, sparks flying.
She stood at the door for a long time, watching the hammer strike rhythmically, neither too fast nor too slow.
The old man looked up at her, then lowered his head and continued knocking.
Niannian stood in the shade of a tree not far away, watching her.
After looking at it for about the time it takes to drink a cup of tea, Luo Nannan turned around and walked over, saying:
"He's a bit like the people who used to repair weapons, but he doesn't fight weapons."
"They make farm tools," Niannian said. "Many people in this town rely on farming, so farm tools are a necessity."
Luo Nannan nodded and continued walking forward.
After walking another hundred steps or so, a stall selling sweet cakes appeared by the roadside. The stall owner arranged the steamed cakes one by one on a bamboo tray, and the steam rose up, bringing with it a sweet aroma.
Xiao Jin went over to take a look, and Nian Nian bought one for everyone.
When Luo Nannan took the sugar cake, she burned her fingertip. She switched hands to support the bottom of the cake and waited for it to cool down before taking a bite.
The outer skin was soft and chewy, and the inside was filled with red bean paste. She ate half a piece before saying, "This is delicious."
"Then I'll buy another one later." Niannian broke her piece in half and handed it to her.
When you reach the end, you'll find an old stone bridge. Underneath the bridge is a narrow river with a slow current, and a few fallen leaves float on its surface.
The houses across the bridge are older, with blue brick walls and parts covered in ivy.
Niannian stood at the bridgehead for a moment, then walked over.
The road narrowed considerably after crossing the bridge, and the walls on both sides were close together, with damp surfaces.
Qiqi walked in front and reached out to touch the vines hanging from the wall. A few water droplets rolled off the leaves.
At the end of the alley, an old ancestral hall appears.
The door was closed, and a thin layer of moss grew on the steps leading to the door, with a few tiny grasses growing in the cracks.
The stone lions at the entrance have been worn smooth by wind and rain, and their facial features are still discernible.
Luo Nannan stood in front of the stone lion for a while, then reached out and touched the top of its head.
"What is this?" Luo Nannan asked.
"Stone lions, placed at the entrance to guard the gate," Niannian said.
"Guard the gate...guard what?"
"Guard this house."
Luo Nannan didn't ask any more questions and turned to walk away.
The Venerable Kumu walked at the back of the procession and paused briefly when passing the entrance of the ancestral hall.
He stood at the door and looked at the tightly closed door. The paint on the door was almost gone, revealing the natural color of the wood underneath, and the grain was clearly visible.
He looked at it for a while, then his gaze fell on a line of characters carved on the lintel. The characters were worn and blurred, but they were still legible. They indicated the year the ancestral hall was built.
"During the Guangxu era," he murmured, his voice not loud, but Xiao Xiao, who was standing nearby, heard him.
"What year was that?" Xiao Xiao asked.
"More than a hundred years ago," said the Venerable Kumu. "Not too long ago, but there has never been anything this new where I live."
Xiao Xiao didn't ask any further questions, and stood next to him for a while looking at the words on the lintel.
At noon, the group arrived at a small restaurant in town.
The restaurant was small, with a few clean square tables and a menu written on red paper pasted on the wall.
Niannian ordered a few dishes, which were quickly prepared.
Luo Nannan picked up a piece of braised eggplant, blew on it before putting it in her mouth, chewed it a couple of times, and nodded.
Xiao Jin mixed the rice into the soup and ate it with relish. Qi Qi followed suit and poured the soup into her own bowl.
Qianqian ate slowly, but she didn't stop eating.
Venerable Kumu sat against the wall, with a bowl of rice and a plate of vegetables in front of him, which he savored slowly and carefully.
After finishing their meal, they strolled around the town for a while. Niannian bought two small baskets at the entrance of a shop selling handmade bamboo crafts, saying she would use them to store things when she returned to the sect.
Luo Nannan saw a small bamboo fan at the shop entrance, picked it up, fanned herself a couple of times, and then put it back.
At 3 p.m., everyone took the car back. Luo Nannan was still sitting by the window.
She stared out the window without moving, clutching a leaf she had picked up sometime earlier in her hand.
As she passed by the lotus pond, she glanced at it again; the lotus flowers were swaying gently in the wind.
When they got back to their lodgings, the sun hadn't set yet. Niannian placed the two bamboo baskets against the wall, and Qiqi washed her hands by the well, making a splashing sound.
Luo Nannan sat on the swing, slowly rocking back and forth, still holding the leaf in her hand, turning it over and over to examine the direction of the veins.
The Venerable Kumu drew water from the well to wash his hands, and then returned to his seat under the eaves.
He sat down, his gaze fixed on the courtyard wall, as if he were thinking about the past.
Luo Tian had a complete view of everything in the secret cultivation chamber of the Zhan Tian Divine Sect.
His divine sense had been scanning over there for a while, and as he looked at the little ones, a slight smile appeared on his lips.
Children's playfulness is innate, and no matter how high their level of cultivation, they cannot avoid it.
