Chapter 209 Remnants of the Ancients!
The clearing of the alien beasts went more smoothly than expected. After Luo Tian took the crystal, the alien beasts in various places seemed to have lost their unified command, their movements became sluggish, their reactions became dull, and their attacks were greatly weakened.
Niannian, along with Xiaoxiao and Qiqi, swept along the coastline, clearing out the remaining beast hordes outside the central defensive line within three days.
Ye Qianxue and Li Mengmeng also sent back battle reports from the east and west ends, saying that the resistance had been significantly reduced and the remaining alien beasts were no longer able to organize a large-scale attack.
On the afternoon of the fourth day, Nian Nian put away her sword and stood on the edge of a high ground, looking at the receding tide in the distance.
There were no more moving shadows on the sea; the sea was calm, as if nothing had happened.
She sheathed the Taiyi Sword and prepared to call Xiaoxiao to retreat.
As she turned around, a hoarse voice came from not far behind her.
"Little one, you have good aptitude; you actually possess an innate Dao physique."
When Nian Nian turned around, a gaunt old man was standing less than ten feet behind her.
He wore a tattered gray robe, the fabric so worn that its original color was no longer discernible, like a burial object about to rot in an ancient tomb.
He was hunched over, his face was covered with crisscrossing wrinkles, his cheekbones were prominent, his eye sockets were sunken, and his eyeballs were cloudy and yellow.
When he spoke, the corner of his mouth twitched slightly, but the wrinkles did not change position, as if they were fixed lines that would not move with changes in expression.
"A primordial Dao body is a once-in-ten-thousand-years occurrence!" he continued. "Come with me, and I will bestow upon you a great fortune."
Xiao Xiao walked up from the side and stood next to Niannian. Her fingers were slightly raised, and a green light was faintly visible between her fingers.
Qiqi and Qianqian also stopped at the same time on the outside, each landing in a different direction.
Luo Nannan stood on the outermost side, her golden pupils fixed on the old man.
"Old man, who are you?" Niannian didn't back down, her voice still childish: "Why are you stopping this princess?"
The old man chuckled, proudly boasting:
"I am an ancient great being who survived the ancient war."
Now that the ancestral star's spiritual energy has been revived, it's time for us old folks to get out and about.
He straightened his back slightly as he spoke, and his back made a few soft popping sounds, as if he hadn't stretched in a long time.
"No need for further nonsense."
He raised his finger and pointed at Niannian and Xiaoxiao respectively.
"You two, come with me. Become my servants, and I'll spare your lives. As for the rest..."
He glanced at Qiqi and Qianqian, then at Luo Nannan, before looking away.
"They're all spirit beasts in human form, so make them all my pets!"
Niannian didn't reply. She sent a distress signal to Luo Tian with a very small movement, simply crushing a communication talisman in her sleeve with her left hand.
Luo Nannan saw it, but didn't say anything or make any unnecessary physical movements.
Xiao Xiao saw it too. She tapped the back of Niannian's hand with her thumb and then withdrew her hand.
The two moved almost simultaneously. Nian Nian charged forward from the front, and the Taiyi Sword's silver light surged.
Xiao Xiao approached from the side, her fingertips glowing with green light that transformed into dozens of thin vines that sprouted from the ground and coiled upwards along the old man's ankles.
The old man didn't dodge. He raised his hand and pushed lightly. The wind generated by his palm deflected Nian Nian's sword strike from a straight thrust, and he casually snapped the vines on her ankle.
He pushed again, this time with significantly more force. Nian Nian and Xiao Xiao both felt a powerful force pressing down on them.
That force wasn't an impact, but rather like a wall advancing at a constant speed, unstoppable.
The two were knocked back several feet. After landing, Niannian bent her knees before straightening up. A thin trail of blood flowed from the corner of her mouth, dripping down her chin onto her collar.
Xiao Xiao retreated even further, flipped half a circle in the air before landing on the ground, staggered half a step, her face pale, but she did not fall.
Qiqi and Qianqian tried to flank them from the side, but the old man didn't turn his head. He just turned his body slightly and struck them with his palm.
The palm strike spread out over a large area, sending both of them flying at the same time.
Qiqi crashed into the rock wall, leaving a shallow crater. Qianqian flipped twice in mid-air before regaining her balance, landing on one knee with blood at the corner of her mouth.
Luo Nannan did not make a move; she stood still and watched the old man's palm strike move.
His gaze followed the trajectory of the palm strike once, then he looked away, neither moving forward nor retreating.
The old man withdrew his hand, about to say something.
Suddenly, a crack appeared in the space in front of him, with golden light emanating from the edges of the crack.
A hand reached out from the crack, pressed down on the old man's shoulder, and pushed him back three steps.
Luo Tian emerged from the crack and landed in front of Nian Nian.
He didn't turn around, but faced the gaunt old man and drew the Xuanyuan Sword from its sheath.
When the sword was drawn, a circle of light spread out, and the pebbles on the ground were sent flying.
The old man took three steps back and stood still, looked Luo Tian up and down, and then the smile on his face disappeared.
"Tribulation stage? Interesting."
Luo Tian didn't reply. In an instant, he moved several feet to the side, and the blade sliced towards the old man's neck from the side.
The old man didn't take the sword head-on; instead, he floated backward a short distance to avoid its edge.
Then he flipped in mid-air, pressed down with one palm, and the palm force, carrying a layer of dark spiritual energy, pressed down on Luo Tian's head.
Luo Tian did not dodge. He raised the Xuanyuan Sword upwards, and the tip of the sword clashed with the force of the palm. A shockwave exploded at the point of impact.
This lifted up a layer of rock on the ground below, revealing a deeper layer underneath.
The crack extended for dozens of feet to both sides, with rubble from the edges constantly rolling down and crashing into the deeper depressions.
The old man was jolted upwards by the sword strike, and when he landed, his feet slid several feet across the rocky surface before coming to a stop, leaving two shallow marks on the ground.
His expression didn't change much, but the way he landed was noticeably less relaxed than before.
Before he could regain his footing, Luo Tian had already followed up with a second sword strike.
When the Xuanyuan Sword slashed diagonally, it brought with it an arc of golden sword energy. The sword energy cut into the air as if it were cutting through a thick layer of cloth, leaving two deep marks when it touched the old man's arms as he was blocking.
The old man took two steps back and looked down at his forearm. The wound was healing, but not as quickly as before.
A blank expression appeared on his face as he considered where to go next.
Luo Tian gave him no time to consider. The third sword was even faster than the first two. The golden sword light drew a trail in the air and landed on the old man's side chest.
This time, the old man didn't completely dodge; the blade sliced into his side ribs, penetrating about a finger's width into the flesh, and when it was pulled out, it brought with it a wisp of dark blood.
When the blood droplets fell to the ground, they left several clear, dark indentations with burn marks on the edges.
The old man covered his wound and retreated a distance. He looked at Luo Tian, and then glanced at Nian Nian behind him, who was wiping the blood from the corner of her mouth.
His gaze lingered on Niannian for a moment before returning to her.
He retreated to a higher rock, stood still, and looked down at his arm.
Then, he looked up at Luo Tian and smiled.
"You think you've got this in the bag?" His voice returned to its previous dryness.
"I'm just the first one to come out, and my strength is the weakest. The others will be emerging soon."
He grinned, revealing a few missing teeth.
"This world still belongs to us; you can't make the decisions for it."
Luo Tian walked up to him, and he didn't say anything more. When the Xuanyuan Sword fell, it encountered no resistance.
The gaunt old man's body split open in the sword light, like a lump of dried mud being split in two.
Luo Tian sheathed his sword and stood quietly in place.
Niannian walked up from behind, the bloodstain at the corner of her mouth already dried, and she asked:
"Dad, he said there are other people too, is that true?"
Luo Tian nodded, looked in one direction, then put the Xuanyuan Sword into his storage ring without saying anything more.
