In the name of the true god
Chapter 75 The Worst Plan
After rotating through all four prison wards, I finally experienced both day and night shifts.
Jude became increasingly convinced of the consensus among the prison guards that there was nothing happier than rotating to the Heretic's Block.
During the twelve hours on duty in the heretical prison area, more than ten hours can be spent in the temporary rest room, where one can sleep, play cards, smoke, listen to the radio, and read novels relatively freely. It couldn't be more relaxing.
The other three prison wards leave virtually no room for prison guards to slack off.
Even though Jude was high up in the watchtower, patrols would come from time to time to check if he was sleeping.
"Ah..." He yawned and glanced at his watch in the searchlight on the watchtower.
1:54 AM.
There are still five and a half hours until the handover.
Then, if I take in breakfast at the cafeteria, drive home, take a bath, feed the pet, and clean the house... I probably won't be able to fall asleep until nine o'clock.
The thought of this kind of life lasting for a whole month made Jude's eyelids droop again, and he yawned repeatedly.
"Didn't you take a nap during the day?" Allen seemed to be in pretty good spirits.
"I can't sleep..." Jude said listlessly.
"It's really not easy to adjust your schedule." Allen has worked in the prison for three years and is already used to such changes. "If you really can't hold on, just take a nap. I'll wake you up if the guards come."
"Will this work?" Jude looked around anxiously. "We're working for Melanie now. If she finds out, she'll tear me apart!"
Allen jokingly added, "You two have danced together, she definitely won't mind."
After being teased so much, Jude has successfully become "desensitized".
I made a promise with Allen that I would sleep for two hours first, and then he would rest. So I sat down in a corner of the watchtower and tried to fall asleep.
However, things did not go as smoothly as expected.
Jude had only been asleep for less than ten minutes when a patrol came to inspect the area.
Over the next hour, the patrol team came four or five times, giving him no chance to doze off.
"Forget it..." Jude was exhausted and could only stand in the cold wind and obediently stand guard. "I'll just have to tough it out. Once I get through the first night..."
"Warden Melanie is really strict," Allen remarked heavily, wrapped in a thick coat. "Normally the patrols would come two or three times a night, but now it's at least twenty times a night."
As security in the prison tightened, the chances of the Divine Descent Society rescuing the thirty-nine of their kind became increasingly slim.
Without realizing it.
He had prepared himself for the worst regarding the rescue plan.
He also felt resentful for having spent three years lying low and groveling to please the priest.
Jude could vaguely sense Allen's undisguised emotions, but even he himself was at a loss and couldn't come up with any words of comfort.
After that, the two remained silent.
Gradually, dawn broke.
After having breakfast in the cafeteria, Jude drove home despite feeling sleepy.
With his eyelids almost closed, he forgot about taking a bath and cleaning. After feeding the golden retriever and the Siamese cat ham, he collapsed onto the soft bed and fell into a deep sleep.
4:30 PM.
Jude, who had woken up naturally, cleaned the house thoroughly and was about to take a shower when a knock on the door suddenly sounded.
He opened the door and saw that it was Allen: "What brings you here?"
Alan looked very unwell. As soon as he closed the door, he hurriedly said, "The president is looking for me. He said that around noon, nearly ten priests suddenly entered the prison."
"What?!" Jude's heart skipped a beat. "What's going on?!"
"I don't know either. The president told me to come find you as soon as possible and try to confirm whether the Holy Church is preparing to relocate our fellow human beings."
"Let's go!" Jude didn't even bother to take a shower. He grabbed his coat and car keys and immediately drove Allen to the capital's heavy prison.
On the way, his brows furrowed as he pondered various possibilities.
Is the Holy Church really going to transfer the thirty-nine implicated wizards and resonance sorcerers?
Surely there must have been some rumors about something this big?
But when his brother Connor came to see him yesterday, he didn't mention this at all.
If it wasn't a relocation, what could the Holy Church have possibly done by suddenly sending ten more priests over?
Could it be that they simply want to strengthen the security of the heretical prison?
That's also unlikely...
The mere fact that five priests were stationed there long-term made the Holy Church feel extremely passive; they certainly didn't have the resources to keep fifteen priests firmly bound to the prison.
"Perhaps it really is time." Sitting in the passenger seat, Allen felt a strange sense of relief. "It's better to ambush the priests' transport convoy than to forcibly break them out of prison."
"Even if we launch an attack with fifteen priests, what are our chances of winning?" Jude asked.
"At most 30%."
30%...
Given Jude's personality, he would never risk such a small chance of winning.
"The chances of a forced prison break are at most 10%, 30% is already quite good, and this way your brother and 'brother and sister-in-law' won't get involved." Alan was well aware of the danger of the attack, but he also knew that this was probably the best opportunity they could wait for.
"Is that what the president means too?"
"Um."
"Let me ask my brother first," Jude said, not in a hurry to express his opinion. "If there is still room for negotiation, try not to rush into action."
"If the decision to attack is really made, you can choose not to participate," Allen said.
That's not what I meant—
"I know that's not what you meant," Allen interrupted Jude. "You've only just become a Tier 1 Resonance Mage, and the power you can wield is far too limited. Rather than participating in the attack and holding us back, it's better to continue lying low... This is also the Guild Master's requirement."
Jude was speechless.
He truly did not expect the situation to take such a sharp turn for the worse in such a short time.
President Frost has been planning for years to rescue the thirty-nine imprisoned wizards and resonance sorcerers, and he certainly won't just stand by and watch them be transferred to the church temple.
Even with two laws at his disposal, the power he can wield is extremely limited.
To remain in hiding and provide intelligence to the Descent of Gods through his brother Connor and his sister-in-law Steele was indeed the best option under the circumstances.
"You don't need to feel ashamed or blame yourself." Allen smiled nonchalantly, as if he had been prepared for this battle all along. "We've all done our best, and whatever the outcome, it doesn't matter."
"...Don't rush, the situation may not be as we imagine." Jude sped off and brought the car to a stop in front of the capital's heavy prison. "You stay here and wait for my news."
