Soul Returns to Hong Kong: From Tailor Shop to Richest Woman
Chapter 152 The Pledge of Allegiance
Old Zhao's complaints didn't last long, because that afternoon, three copies of the thirty-three-page document were made and sent to three different places.
One copy went to the Communication Research Laboratory of the University of Posts and Telecommunications, another went to the Information Engineering Joint Research Group within the University of Science and Technology, and the third was put into a sealed bag and sent to a higher-level department through the university office.
Within three days, the feedback from the communications research lab arrived first.
The research lab called: "Old Gu! The model your student wrote—seven of us in the lab spent two days verifying it, and it's completely accurate! Moreover, the channel capacity estimation formula they provided is almost two orders of magnitude more accurate than the method we used before!"
Deputy Director Gu held the phone receiver without saying a word.
The person on the other end continued, "And that interference analysis—the matrix method she used was something we never even considered! Let me tell you, if we follow her approach, we can save ourselves at least three years of wasted time! Three years!"
"I understand," said Deputy Director Gu. "Please don't get agitated."
"How could I not be excited? I've been excited for ten years and I've never been this excited! What's going on in this girl's head? She's only twenty! How can a twenty-year-old understand the underlying architecture of an entire communication network so thoroughly?"
Vice Director Gu sighed: "Old Xu, calm down, I have a question for you."
"you say."
"Has anyone on your side mentioned bringing her into the project team?"
The person on the other end of the phone said, "They brought it up, more than one person did. But I stopped them."
"Why are you pressing it down?"
"Because I'm not senile yet," Old Xu said directly. "This person is from Hong Kong and has been in England for three years; her resume is there for all to see. Although she passed the background check, it doesn't mean that all procedures can be completed in one step."
Deputy Director Gu nodded: "There's one more thing you haven't thought of."
"What?"
"She still wants to go back to Hong Kong," Deputy Director Gu continued. "Her family is all in Hong Kong; you know the situation there right now, all sorts of forces are watching. If we tie her to these things now, will she be able to go back normally in the future?"
Old Zhao thought for a moment: "You mean, if someone finds out that this document was written by her, she'll be in trouble over there?"
"It's not just troublesome; her family might also be implicated. Once communications networks are tagged with military applications, their nature changes."
There was a long silence on both ends of the phone.
Finally, Old Xu spoke first: "So, what are you planning to do?"
"Talk to her first," Deputy Director Gu said. "Speak frankly and see what she thinks."
"Okay," Old Zhao said. "Don't scare her when you talk to her. She's a young girl; don't make it like an interrogation."
Deputy Director Gu snorted: "I'm not like you, speaking without thinking."

Two days later, on Thursday afternoon.
Lin Ying had just finished her signal processing class. Sun Miaoshu was packing up her textbooks next to her, muttering about how much homework Professor Fang had assigned. Lin Ying stuffed her notebook into her bag when someone suddenly appeared at the door.
He was a man in his forties, with very short hair and a work ID pinned to his chest.
"Lin Ying?"
Lin Ying looked up at him: "Yes, it is."
The man smiled. "My surname is Li, I work in the logistics department. The department sent me to find you; there's something I'd like to discuss with you. Is that a convenient time?"
Sun Miaoshu pricked up her ears.
Lin Ying stood up: "Now?"
"If it's convenient for you now, just come with me. It won't take too long."
Lin Ying slung her backpack over her shoulder, said "I'm leaving now" to Sun Miaoshu, and followed the boy surnamed Li out of the classroom.
The two hadn't gone far when they reached a small conference room at the far end of the second teaching building; the door opened, and three people were already sitting inside.
Deputy Director Gu was there, Professor He was there, and there was also a middle-aged man that Lin Ying had never seen before, wearing an ordinary white shirt, with a cup of tea in front of him.
"Sit down," Deputy Director Gu said, pointing to the chair opposite him.
Lin Ying sat down. She had a pretty good idea of what was going on; there couldn't possibly be no follow-up to that document.
The middle-aged man in the white shirt spoke first: "Lin Ying, several departments of us have reviewed the cellular networking plan you submitted earlier."
Lin Ying nodded but didn't reply.
The middle-aged man continued, "The content inside is of great help to several communication research directions that we are currently advancing; some problems have been stuck for a long time, and your frequency reuse calculation model has directly paved the way."
Lin Ying remained silent, waiting for him to continue.
The middle-aged man glanced at Deputy Director Gu, who nodded slightly.
"So, someone suggested that you join the relevant research group." The middle-aged man paused here, "but after internal discussion, we felt that this matter couldn't be rushed, nor could we put you in a difficult position."
Lin Ying asked, "What are you worried about?"
The middle-aged man didn't shy away: "Your background—you're a permanent resident of Hong Kong, studied in the UK for three years, and only returned less than six months ago. Your entire family is in Hong Kong; if we bring you into the core project now, what if the news leaks out...?"
"I understand." Lin Ying finished his sentence. "You're worried that I won't be able to return to Hong Kong in the future, or that my family will be targeted."
Professor He coughed and said, "Lin Ying, it's not that we don't trust you, it's that we're afraid of making you feel wronged. You came here to study, and we don't want this to affect your normal life."
Lin Ying looked at the people opposite her and said with a smile, "Dear teachers, I had already thought this through when I handed in this document."
Several people were looking at her.
"This is my pledge of allegiance to the mainland; I studied mathematics, and I can calculate far more than this. The network is just the first step; there are also digital encryption, baseband algorithms, terminal design... I can do them all; but my foundation is not solid enough yet, and my engineering experience is far from sufficient. I have hardly touched any of the equipment in the laboratory, and I still need to verify many theoretical derivations with actual data."
She looked at the middle-aged man: "That's why I need you to mentor me."
"Once I've completed my training," Lin Ying continued, "I'll be able to do much more than I am now. You're in such a hurry to pull me in now that I can only be a half-advisor for you. But if you give me another two or three years, I can give you a complete solution from theory to factory production."
The middle-aged man looked at the twenty-year-old girl in front of him; she wore an ordinary short-sleeved shirt, sat in a relaxed posture, and every word that came out of her mouth did not seem like something a normal person would say.
"Lin Ying, do you know what you're saying?"
"Know."
"By handing this over, you've revealed your biggest trump card to us; aren't you afraid we'll take it and deny everything?"
Lin Ying looked at him and said, "If you were that kind of people, I wouldn't have come back in the first place."
The middle-aged man was stunned.
Professor He let out a deep breath.
The middle-aged man snapped out of his daze and closed the document in front of him: "Okay, I understand what you mean. Then let me make myself clear."
"First, from today onwards, the materials you submit will no longer be associated with your name; your name will not appear in any research records; this is to protect you."
Lin Ying nodded.
"Secondly, you can attend classes and study normally here, just like other students; no one will cause you trouble, and no one will label you."
"Third..." The middle-aged man looked at her, "If you have any new ideas, new derivations, or new plans in the future, you can submit them through Professor He at any time; we won't rush you or force you. You can bring them out whenever you feel they are ready."
Lin Ying thought for a moment: "I still have a little bit here."
"you say."
"I need to go back to Hong Kong for business and to see my family in the future, and this route cannot be blocked."
The middle-aged man nodded: "There won't be any traffic jams; we will guarantee your freedom of movement."
"Then there's no problem." Lin Ying stood up.
The middle-aged man also stood up: "Lin Ying, may I ask you a private question?"
"ask."
"You're only twenty years old; aren't you afraid of regretting it later by playing such a big hand?"
Lin Ying picked up her schoolbag and slung it over her shoulder: "I had too many regrets in my past life, and I don't want to accumulate any more in this one."
Professor He shook his head from the side: "This girl talks like a seasoned veteran."
Deputy Director Gu saw her to the door and whispered as he left, "Go back and be ready for class. Don't let your classmates notice anything unusual."
"Don't worry." Lin Ying pushed open the door. "I have a lot of experience playing normal people."
Stepping out of the conference room, the hallway was empty, and the sound of footsteps running on the playground could be heard outside the window.
Lin Ying carried her schoolbag downstairs, her steps neither fast nor slow.
As they reached the cafeteria entrance, Sun Miaoshu ran out, shouting, "Lin Ying! Where have you been? I got your food; it'll get cold if you don't come soon!"
"Coming, coming." Lin Ying quickened her pace and went inside.
"What does the logistics department want with you?" Sun Miaoshu handed her the lunchbox.
Lin Ying picked up her chopsticks and asked, "Are the humidifiers in my dorm room prohibited appliances?"
"Huh? You're regulating this too?"
"Man, they almost confiscated it."
Sun Miaoshu slammed her fist on the table in anger: "This school is so controlling, even using humidifiers! Did you even tell them? The air in Beijing is so dry! Your throat will feel like it's on fire if you don't use a humidifier!"
