Chapter 19: Precise and Elegant

Although Simon was learning the basics in swordsmanship class, Li En could tell that Simon's performance absolutely lived up to the label of "swordsmanship master".

He clearly had a foundation; as the eldest son of an earl, swordsmanship was obviously an essential part of his life.

Li En estimated that he had received specialized swordsmanship instruction from a young age, which is why he quickly surpassed his peers.

Many students need guidance from their instructors for certain movements, but he doesn't need any guidance at all. He can simply do what his swordsmanship instructor asks him to do.

His footwork, movements, and posture were almost flawless; he was a model student in swordsmanship class.

"Excellent, Mr. Byrne," the swordsmanship instructor nodded with satisfaction. "Your father will be very proud of you. Hopefully, your swordsmanship will be at a level that will surprise everyone during the University of Michigan's anniversary celebrations."

Simon simply smiled and said, "This is what I should do as the eldest son of the Earl."

As the course neared its end, the swordsmanship instructor looked at Li En and Ruby at the edge of the swordsmanship hall and asked, "Gentlemen, the course is almost over. Do you have any thoughts? You can talk to me about it, and I can also use this opportunity to get a sense of your level in advance."

Ruby had just said "This is so boring," but as soon as she stood in front of the swordsmanship instructor, she immediately changed her expression and replied with a smile, "It's a very elegant course, and it has given me some inspiration for my understanding of etiquette class."

"Before this, I always thought that swordsmanship class was a course for men to unleash their destructive nature, and it was very crude. But looking at it this way, swordsmanship class can also be elegant. No wonder it is one of the sports of the nobility."

The swordsmanship instructor nodded in satisfaction, while Li En felt ashamed.

No wonder she's labeled a "fraudster"—she doesn't even blush when she lies.

"A very interesting understanding," the swordsmanship instructor said, looking at Li En. "And Mr. Wells, what about you? I'm very interested in you, and I hope you won't say anything that disappoints me. You know, I hate empty words."

Before copying the fraudster label, Li En would probably have hesitated, but now that she has the fraudster label, she naturally feels more confident.

In any case, as long as your attitude is firm enough, you can make the other party believe some not-so-outrageous rhetoric.

"The swordsmanship class is very interesting. If I didn't have to wait until next year to start systematic swordsmanship training, I would probably sign up for classes now."

This was clearly just a polite remark; any normal person could tell that Li En was only saying it to appease everyone.

Generally speaking, at this point, the swordsmanship instructor should show a disappointed expression.

Strangely, the swordsmanship instructor did not show any disappointment. Instead, he was stunned for a moment before nodding in satisfaction.

"Yes, I'm very happy to hear you say that."

Simon and the students behind him were dumbfounded. "Professor! You just said you hated empty talk a second ago, how come you were fooled by empty talk the next second?"

Just as Li Engang breathed a sigh of relief, he heard the swordsmanship teacher suddenly say, "Since you have such a strong interest in swordsmanship, let me test your talent."

The instructor tossed a wooden sword to Li En, who walked to the center of the swordplay hall and picked up a wooden sword as well. "Come on, Mr. Wells."

Li En: "..."

Are you out of your mind?!

Ruby patted Lee on the back with a smug look on her face and said, "Looks like sometimes polite words don't work."

Simon then approached the swordsmanship instructor and asked, "Instructor, isn't this unnecessary? He's probably never systematically studied swordsmanship; he's a complete novice."

"Don't worry, I know what I'm doing," the swordsmanship instructor said calmly. "I just rarely encounter a student who is so passionate about swordsmanship, so I wanted to test their talent. There's nothing else I was thinking."

Seeing that his mentor had said this, Simon didn't know what to say and could only compromise.

Helpless, Li En, holding the wooden sword, walked up to the swordsmanship instructor.

"Very good," the swordsmanship instructor nodded. "Attention!"

Before the words were even finished, the swordsmanship instructor and Li En simultaneously assumed the stances for a swordsmanship duel.

"Oh?" Ruby was somewhat surprised to see that Li En and the swordsmanship instructor had simultaneously assumed the exact same stance. "He even knows how to do a stance?"

Simon and the swordsmanship instructor noticed something amiss.

wrong.

Lee Eun's pose was absolutely perfect, so perfect that it was beyond reproach.

This is definitely not something that can be achieved by simply imitating with the naked eye. This guy must have studied something related to swordsmanship!

Li En's right foot stepped forward slightly, his body turned halfway, and the tip of his wooden sword pointed steadily at the swordsmanship instructor.

"His upper body was straight but not stiff, his arms were just right, and his whole person was like a taut yet elegant string..."

The swordsmanship instructor was also surprised to see this.

This guy's skill level is on par with Simon's!

But Simon's skills were developed from childhood; he had been learning swordsmanship since he was a child.

How could Li En, a complete novice, have such a high level of skill?

Without much hesitation, the swordsmanship teacher made the first move.

The wooden sword in his hand thrust straight out, its path even straighter than the light piercing through the long window!

Li En's expression changed slightly as he easily parried the sword's attack. His movements were fluid and effortless, without the awkwardness or panic typical of a novice.

"Such a high level!"

The swordsmanship teacher switched from offense to defense, and Li En's wooden sword attacked from the side.

He tried to parry with his sword, but strangely, the wooden sword in Li En's hand was so powerful that he couldn't even deflect the sword's path, let alone parry it!

Snapped--

The wooden sword in the swordsmanship teacher's hand was knocked away by Li En after only one exchange.

The tip of the wooden sword was aimed directly at the swordsmanship teacher's neck, but it stopped just in front of his Adam's apple.

The swordsmanship teacher stared into Li En's eyes, which were cold and fierce, like a shark lurking in the deep sea, waiting for its chance to strike.

The entire swordplay hall fell silent. Simon and the other students couldn't believe what they were seeing.

A swordsmanship instructor was defeated by Li En, an amateur, in a single round.

No.

He can hardly be called an amateur; every move he makes is like that of a master swordsman, precise and elegant!

"It seems I won by sheer luck," Li En sheathed his wooden sword and smiled again. "Thank you, mentor. I have benefited greatly from this."

The swordsmanship instructor was a little stunned until he saw Li En pick up his wooden sword and hand it to him, then he realized what was happening.

"Mr. Wells," the fencing instructor swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing, "have you studied fencing before?"

Li En shook her head. "No."

He simply copied Simon's label as a master swordsman, but he didn't expect the label to be so powerful.

While the swordsmanship techniques mentioned earlier were more geared towards social activities among nobles, the later effect of "all your attacks become difficult to defend against" is quite effective in actual combat.

"Mr. Wells, I have a suggestion," the fencing instructor grabbed Li En's hands, "would you be my teaching assistant? I can offer you a salary!"

Lee En: "?"

Even Simon rushed over, excitedly telling Li En, "Your swordsmanship is superb! I hope you can become a teaching assistant so we can improve together. Then, at the University of Michigan's anniversary celebration, we can perform together on stage!"

What exactly is the University of Michigan's anniversary celebration?

Li Enqian chuckled, "But I'm still busy preparing for the Golden Dawn Open. Wouldn't being an assistant coach take up too much of my time?"

"No, I'll arrange the lessons according to your schedule," the swordsmanship instructor said surprisingly. "You can come as a teaching assistant whenever you're free, and I'll pay you by the hour. How about that?"

Li En thought about it and felt that it might be a good idea.

Since I'm already "working part-time" with Professor Osborne, it doesn't seem like a big problem for me to work part-time as a teaching assistant at the fencing gym.

Seeing that Li En had agreed, the swordsmanship instructor was overjoyed.

After all, no teacher dislikes a talented student.

Seeing this, Ruby smiled gently and turned to leave.

Just then.

"Miss Roland, please wait."

The swordplay instructor suddenly called out to Ruby, who was about to turn and leave, and gestured for her to come in.

"I have some connection with your father, Sir Roland," the swordsmanship instructor said coldly. "I have some things I'd like to discuss with you about your father."
