Chapter 36: The Hound of the Baskervilles

Noon the next day.

Having finished Professor Eli's class, Li En, holding his textbook, was walking out of the classroom.

"Mr. Wells," Professor Eli suddenly called out to him, his wide black robes exuding an oppressive aura like a wild beast approaching.

Li En stopped, waved to Blake and Rosalind, and then replied, "Professor, is there something you need?"

Professor Eli tucked the textbook under his arm and strolled over to Li En. "Let's talk as we walk."

Following behind the professor, Li En heard Professor Eli ask him, "I've heard from Cole that you've already read up to Chapter Three of the Hermetic Textual Interpretation, right?"

Li En nodded. "I've finished reading Chapter Three."

Professor Eli's remaining words caught in his throat. He had only learned this morning that Li En had read up to the third chapter, and had finished it in less than half a day?

After composing himself, Professor Eli nodded in satisfaction. "Hmm, very good. If you truly understand everything, the preliminary rounds will not be a problem for you. At most, it will just be a competition for the preliminary rankings."

Lee instinctively wanted to say, "It's all thanks to the professor's excellent teaching," but judging from the personalities of the professors at the University of Michigan, Professor Eli probably didn't like hearing such flattery.

After thinking for a moment, Li En asked, "Professor, have you heard about Professor Buckwell?"

"The hounds, is it?" Professor Eli nodded. "I've heard about them. Are you interested in that?"

During the monkey paw incident, Li En suspected that Professor Eli might also have a label similar to a natural investigator, which was why he was able to recognize that the monkey paw was a real thing.

If that's the case, Professor Eli might also have some insights into the matter of the Hound of the Baskervilles.

Professor Eli said in a deep voice, "This might be true, but Professor Baskerville is one of the most respected professors at the University of Michigan. If he can't observe the missing hounds, then we probably can't either."

After saying that, Professor Eli reminded Li En: "I must warn you first, Mr. Wells, that the mysticism is a very dangerous subject. It walks on the boundary between reason and mystery, and if you are not careful, you will fall into an abyss."

"Before you do anything, you need to think it through. Not everyone has the talent to confront the mysterious."

Li En responded and raised her head slightly.

A label that had not yet taken shape suddenly appeared on Professor Eli's head.

Although this was not Lee En's intention, a new label has been born on Professor Eli.

"No rush. Since we've already seen unfinished labels, it means that new, replicable labels will be available soon."

Li En said to himself.

Professor Eli left quickly.

Standing in the central courtyard of the campus, Li En looked at the sun and moon statues juxtaposed in the fountain.

The rushing water concealed the statue behind it, everything was so blurry, as if a curtain had been drawn across the stage, obscuring what lay behind it.

"The world is not as simple as I thought, and the church's rampant behavior is not accidental."

"There is something that I have not yet fully observed beneath the normal social order."

Li En looked down at the occult textbook he was holding in his hand.

"I need more abilities to protect myself, not just to push my physical limits, but also to gain enhancements related to the mystical."

……

It's 10 PM.

Li En left home.

Despite his previous arrest at Scotland Yard, his family did not question him about anything.

Since Zoe didn't go home tonight, she's probably staying at school.

My father isn't home either. Lately, it seems like he's been away from home all the time, running off every few days.

Only Reina, the maid, was at home. She had no right to stop Li En from going out, so she could only repeatedly tell him to be careful and to be ready to bail him out at Scotland Yard at any time.

After leaving home, Li En wrapped a dark coat around himself. He had bought it from a worker on the roadside. The fabric was quite rough and stiff, not concerned with appearance, but only with being able to withstand the dampness and coal smoke of London.

The inside and outside of the clothes smelled of construction dust and sweat, which made them quite uncomfortable.

However, it's quite good as cover for nighttime travel.

He held in his arms the silver candlestick and three candles made of sperm whale oil, which Li En had specially asked Lena to buy for him.

Bringing along an unusual item was also a measure Li En took to prepare for unforeseen circumstances.

Walking through the fog-shrouded streets of London, and following the dim light of the gas lamps, Li En quickly spotted Estelle huddled under a streetlamp near the campus.

"Hey! Li En! I'm here!"

Estelle waved to Li En and called his name in a weak voice.

She was dressed in a uniform similar to that of a newsboy, and it was hard to imagine that such a petite body could contain such great strength.

"I just checked," Estelle pointed to the University of Michigan's campus gate. "The gate isn't locked; we can just walk in, as long as no one sees us!"

Weren't they locking the doors? Aren't they worried that homeless people would come into the school at night and use the classrooms as resting places?

Li En found it a bit strange, but it was a rare opportunity.

"Let's go."

With Estelle by her side, Li En walked into the campus.

After ten o'clock, the campus was shrouded in darkness. The gas lamps, however brightly lit, could not penetrate the layers of gray fog and darkness, and could only provide a faint light source.

They walked along the campus wall and arrived at a tower at the University of Michigan.

The tower is entirely gray, its shadow cast crookedly on the messy stone path, standing like a steadfast soldier in the campus.

This tower has many floors, and most of the rooms inside are for professors and mentors to conduct research.

The highly respected Professor Baskerville's research lab was on the very top floor of the tower, and the missing hunting dog also disappeared on the very top floor of the tower.

"Are we really going to go up there?"

Estelle's voice sounded somewhat timid as she gripped Li En's arm tightly, indicating that the rumors were putting considerable psychological pressure on her.

"It's okay," Li En patted her head, "I'm here, everything will be alright."

These words were like a spell, and they actually reduced Estelle's fear considerably.

Pushing open the wooden door of the tower, there was a lock hanging on it, but it wasn't locked, like burying one's head in the sand.

Behind the door is a long, narrow spiral staircase. The gray steps blend into the wall bricks, making them almost indistinguishable. You can only tell which is which by looking at the gaps between the bricks.

The tower was quiet. Li En took down the kerosene lamp from the wall and used it to illuminate the road ahead.

He opened his eyes as an investigator, wanting to see if there was anything noteworthy nearby.

But something strange happened.

Li En observed the interior of the tower.

There wasn't a trace of spirituality here.
