Chapter 48: The Arrest Operation
Having left the cell and returned to the criminal investigation office, Joel slowly unfolded a case file.
"I had considered copycat crimes before, so I had already done some research," Joel said in a deep voice, pointing to the text on the file in the sunlight streaming through the blinds. "If it's a copycat crime, then we can consider revenge killings. To that end, I also investigated the interpersonal relationships of the two victims."
Having ruled out the woman, Joel's attention naturally turned to the interpersonal relationships of the man's corpse.
"First of all, this man is called Carl Logan, a notorious alcoholic from Southwark."
Upon hearing the name Nan Hua Ke, Li En couldn't help but feel a deep sense of respect.
The area was located on the south bank of the Thames and was a typical mix of poor people and workers.
Southwark has long been home to numerous pubs, cheap hotels, and substandard housing, and many dockworkers live there, making social problems particularly prominent.
In a place like this, it's perfectly normal for one or two people to disappear, and no one will bother to look for them.
Because it won't be long before the missing people rise from the bottom of the Thames.
"His social relationships were rather complicated. He was disliked by many bars in Southwark and owed a large amount of debt. He was even once forced by his creditors to fight in underground boxing matches, where he paid off all his debts by being beaten up. After that, he became immersed in this way of making money."
Now Li En understands where those scars and bruises on the man named Logan came from over the years.
"Logically speaking, it would be difficult for us to identify the killer in this situation because there are too many people who want to kill him, but I don't think so."
Joel looked up at the crowd in front of him and gave his conclusion.
It seems he was waiting for the officers to give the answer they were hoping for.
Unfortunately, the officers all turned their attention to him, and none of them had the idea of finding the answer through their own thinking.
Joel was somewhat disappointed.
"Because the killer knew the details of the London serial killer, right?"
Lee's voice rang out at the opportune moment, and Joel looked up and nodded approvingly at Lee.
"That's right. We haven't released the details of the London serial killer's murders, but the killer perfectly imitated them, which means the killer must be connected to Scotland Yard."
Joel reluctantly looked away from Lee En. He even thought how wonderful it would be if Lee En were not a student, but one of his police officers.
Joel picked up a document from the table again and pointed to the information on it, saying, "Tobin Lynch, this man is a police officer at Scotland Yard, mainly responsible for organizing and filing case files. He is fully capable of accessing every case file of the London serial killer and understanding all the contents of it."
"More importantly, he is extremely passionate about underground boxing. He spends about three days a week going to the underground boxing ring in Southwark to gamble on fights. Sometimes he even steps into the ring himself to fight against boxers he doesn't like."
Joel's voice deepened, and with his snake-like eyes, his words increasingly resembled the hissing of a snake flicking its tongue.
"Tobin Lynch lost a high-stakes boxing match to Carl Rogan, incurring a huge debt of nearly £100. We have reason to suspect that he harbored resentment towards Carl Rogan because of this incident and used it as a motive for murder."
"Moreover, since last week, Tobin Lynch has been on sick leave and has not come to Scotland Yard to report, which is very likely because he is researching some kind of mystical power."
No one disagreed with Joel's judgment; after all, Tobin Lynch did sound very much like the murderer.
Now that the suspect has been identified, the next step is naturally to designate an arrest operation.
The arrest operation had nothing to do with a dean; Parker was only there as a technical advisor and of course wouldn't be on-site to arrest the criminals.
Li En originally thought that what happened next had nothing to do with him, and planned to leave directly.
At that moment, a slightly heavy object was placed in his hands.
Li En looked down and saw a dark-colored flintlock pistol.
The barrel is short, and its dark metallic color combined with the wooden stock makes it look like a wild beast gnawing on a tombstone.
The carvings and brass inlays on the metal parts resemble the eyes of a wild beast, reflecting the sunlight outside the blinds and lurking with a strong sense of aggression.
"You said it before," Joel said to Lee, "that you can hit anything within ten meters with pinpoint accuracy, even a tiny, stinging fly."
These were basically Lee En's exact words. He never expected that a casual remark he made when he was arrested at Scotland Yard would be remembered verbatim by Joel to this day.
"Am I also going to participate in the arrest operation?"
Joel and Lee met eyes, and Joel asked calmly, without any coercion or expectation, "You can refuse if you don't want to."
Knowing that the other party possessed mystical power, Lee En did hesitate, but this was one of the few opportunities to confirm his voice in the mystical world.
"Okay," Li En didn't hesitate for long. "I'm willing to give everything for the nights of Londoners."
Having gotten used to saying polite things, Li En can now say such things without batting an eye.
But Joel was shocked when he heard this.
"Alright!" His voice trembled slightly, seemingly infected by Li En's determination and resolve. He gripped Li En's shoulder firmly. "Let me see what you're capable of!"
Dean Parker simply watched Li En's retreating figure from afar. Hearing Li En's polite remark, he was suddenly reminded of his own past, when he was full of thirst for knowledge.
Unfortunately, he backed down in the face of danger and difficulty.
But Lee Eun chose to move forward.
"What a promising talent..."
……
Under Joel's arrangement, the entire preparatory work for the arrest proceeded in an orderly manner.
The arrest operation was simple: first, Joel and Lee went to Tobin Lynch's house to check on him.
If he's lucky and doesn't notice anything amiss, then Joel can take him down on the spot.
But if he's unlucky and Lin Qi senses the danger beforehand, the police officers lying in ambush around him will swarm him and surround him until they capture him.
It was a very brutal arrest operation, but it also aligned with Li En's understanding of the rational side.
If the mystical side is involved, things might not be so simple.
For this reason, Li En even asked Joel to take him home first.
In his room, Li En picked up the collar and silver candlestick on the table. These were his trump cards on the mystical side, which could play a significant role in fighting against the forces of the mystical side.
After picking up the collar and silver candlestick, Li En noticed the monkey paw that he had kept on his bedside table ever since he got it.
The monkey's rough skin and curly hair still lay flat on the table, but its five thin, withered fingers were twisted and intertwined like tree roots.
While Li En wasn't paying attention, its fingers moved countless times, just to get Li En's attention.
Then, make him make a wish that comes at a heavy price.
"It's not your turn to appear yet."
Li En left those words behind, carefully put away the necklace and silver candlestick, and turned to leave.
The door was open, and a long, narrow corridor stretched out in front of the monkey paw, but it did not leave.
creak—
A thin, sharp, piercing sound echoed in the room, and the door to Li En's bedroom closed by itself without warning.
The monkey paw on the bedside table, with its five withered, black fingers, began to wriggle, its index finger pointing at the tabletop.
Sharp fingernails left barely noticeable fine lines on the table.
It's as if they are writing words.
