Chapter 56: Tobin Lynch's Diary
sleepless nights.
Li En sat by his bedside, a silver candlestick standing before him. The flames of three whale brain oil candles flickered, illuminating the strangely shifting body of the hunting dog within the flames.
"Rational Hound" was the name Li En originally wanted to give it, but he thought it was too childish, so he changed the name.
Tindaros.
The name comes from the Tindaros Hound, a predatory creature in the Cthulhu Mythos capable of traversing time and space.
For a monster that exists outside the material world but can attack everything in the material world at any time, Li En thought the name was quite appropriate.
Li En lit a match, pointed to the pillow he had tossed in the corner of the room, and hissed, "Go!"
Tindalos, outside the material world, immediately pounced on him, launching an attack from outside the material world in an incomprehensible manner.
Watching the pillow fly through the air, its linen fabric trimmed with thin ropes torn to shreds by an unseen force, its down filling scattered all over the floor, Li En nodded in satisfaction.
After a night of training, he has finally taught Tindalos some simple commands.
For example, the ignition of a flame is a signal that one is about to issue an order.
Tindalos only executes the simplest commands, which is to attack. This may be related to its original hunting dog instincts, or it may be that Li En's intelligence is not high enough to make it understand more commands.
If that's the case, he'll need to further enhance his reputation as a natural investigator.
However, even the simplest attack order is enough for Li En now.
Dengdengdeng-
There was a knock on the bedroom door, and Lena's voice came from outside, "Young Master, are you awake?"
Li En quickly blew out the candles, placed the candlesticks and collar on the bedside table, and responded, "I'm awake."
squeak--
The bedroom door was slowly pushed open, and as soon as Lena opened it, she saw a mess all over the floor.
"Young Master," Lena said in surprise, looking at the torn pillow on the floor, "what...what did you do?"
“There was a mouse,” Li En explained casually. “You know, the mice in London are too cunning. I never managed to catch it.”
In London, where pollution is so severe, rat infestations are naturally quite common. When Lena heard that there were rats in the house, she immediately looked apologetic. "I'm sorry, young master. This must be due to my negligence. I will check the house as soon as possible and make sure that there are no more rats."
Lena's face looked terrible, and Li En knew roughly why.
A few years before Li En's time travel, Greenwich experienced an unprecedented plague outbreak, killing approximately 20,000 people. Fortunately, the disease was eventually brought under control by the Church, which, to some extent, laid the foundation for the Church's current status.
Greenwich is very close to London, and if there are signs of a resurgence of the plague, London would clearly be in danger as well.
"It's okay," Lee En said, reassuring Lena since she had already made up a lie. "Maybe getting a cat would be a good idea."
Although I now have a hunting dog.
Lena responded respectfully, her face pale as she walked downstairs to get cleaning tools and clean the down feathers from the room.
As a maid, she was undoubtedly perfect. Whether it was housework, household chores, or caring for the Wells family, Lena had done everything she could.
She was quite shocked to suddenly learn that her work mistake had resulted in mice in her home.
Li En even felt a little guilty.
After changing her clothes and washing up, Li En went to the restaurant.
The father sat at the head of the table in the dining room, the Times set aside; it seemed there was nothing of interest to him today.
Zoe soon followed, yawning as she came downstairs. It was Sunday, after all, and she seemed a bit relaxed.
"Lena," Zoe said jokingly as soon as she sat down at the table, "I'm getting Li En a nice outfit today. He's going on a date with a girl tonight, so he can't dress too casually."
Pushing the shopping cart, Lena placed Zoe's breakfast in front of her, nodding as she indicated, "Understood."
Li En didn't say anything, just silently chewed on the cold bacon, longing for hot porridge and fried dough sticks.
"Son," the father asked, "can you tell me? Who is this person?"
"Linda Rowland," Li En said, giving Ruby's pseudonym, "is said to be the daughter of Sir Rowland, a viscount. She's my senior from school, and I, she, Black, Simon Byrne, and I often dine together."
Upon hearing this, the father frowned slightly. "A woman from Sir Roland's family?"
However, he merely repeated Li En's words without going into further detail.
Zoe, however, showed a slightly surprised expression. "The Viscount's young lady? I was just joking at first, but I didn't expect you to actually hook up with a girl of higher status than yourself. Impressive!"
Whether she is a daughter of a viscount is still debatable.
Li En didn't say much, but silently drank the black tea with milk in her cup. "I'm going to read a book now."
ding ding ding-
Just as Li En got up, the doorbell rang softly at the door, just in time.
Lena opened the door herself, seemingly having a conversation with someone at the entrance, before returning to the restaurant.
"Young master, someone is looking for you."
Looking for me?
Li En arrived at his doorstep completely bewildered, only to find that standing on the steps was a Scotland Yard officer he had met once before in the criminal investigation office.
He even had two labels on his head at the same time.
[Warrior of Materialism]
Sharpshooter
Li En found it incredible that this police officer had participated in the operation to arrest Tobin Lynch. Although he himself was not harmed, he had witnessed such a scene, yet he still had the label of a materialist fighter.
After copying both labels, Li En finally asked, "Sir, is there something you need from me?"
The officer first straightened up, then took a notebook from under his arm and handed it to Li En.
"This is what we found at Tobin Lynch's house. We can't figure out what it is, but Sheriff Greg suggested I show it to you."
Li En took the notebook from the police officer and gently stroked the cover.
This is a rather exquisite notebook, with a cover covered in crimson leather. The leather surface is embossed with fine patterns, and it feels like the wrinkles on the surface of a book, conveying the caress of time to your fingertips.
There was no text on the cover, so Li En opened it to the first page.
The first page of the notebook contained a line of names.
Tobin Lynch.
Apart from the names, the rest of the text is a different script from English and Latin.
Li En recognized the string of characters.
This is Greek!
Below the name was a line written by Lynch in Greek.
"This is my diary. I will use this diary to record everything that happened when I met that person."
This is Lynch's diary!
As Li En looked at this line of text, his eyes gradually sharpened.
This is Lynch's diary, which records everything when he met "that person." Who is "that person" he is referring to?
"Sir," the officer asked Li En, "do you have any leads?"
Regaining his senses, Li En replied to the officer, "Oh, this is Tobin Lynch's diary. The writing is in Greek, which I can understand."
"You even know Greek!" The officer looked surprised. "That's incredible!"
Greek is not widely spoken in Britain; it is only known to those who have received an elite education.
However, compared to Latin, its weight is naturally much smaller.
"Would you mind if I kept this book? I'd like to study its contents," Li En asked. "Perhaps I can find some interesting clues."
The officer nodded in acknowledgment. "Sheriff Greg said that if you need it, you can keep this book."
So it was already explained beforehand.
Li En raised his head slightly, his gaze falling on the characters floating above the police officer's head.
