Chapter 7: The Warrior of Materialism

London at night is more terrifying than during the day.

London is shrouded in fog during the day, but the abundance of people and the horse-drawn carriages running side by side on the streets, their wheels making a sound like a drum set, adds a touch of liveliness.

But in London at night, those who wander the streets are more or less skirting the edge of the law.

The Lee family lives on the south bank of the Thames. Although most of the area is poor, there is a small section in the outer suburbs that are middle-class homes and are relatively safer.

Of course, they can't compare to the wealthy gentlemen of West London.

A lamplighter lit the gas-powered streetlights along the roadside, climbed down the ladder he carried with him, and bowed to Li En, who was standing in front of his house.

After the lights came on, a prostitute who had been following Li En all the way, hoping to ask him for his thoughts, left dejectedly upon seeing this.

Li En paused for a moment, then reached out and knocked on the door in front of him.

Dengdengdeng-

He knocked on the door, and a response came quickly from behind it.

A maid in a black and white dress opened the door for Li En and skillfully took his school uniform jacket and personal belongings from him. "Young Master Li En, welcome back."

The maid was very beautiful, and looked no older than Lee Eun. Her black hair was tucked into her hat, revealing her fair neck.

Li En's family lives in a three-story townhouse. Although it is called a villa, it is not much different from a townhouse apartment, except that all three floors belong to Li En's family.

"Dinner is ready, and the master and young lady are waiting for you."

Li En responded and walked into the restaurant.

Inside the restaurant, a man and a woman were already seated at the table. The middle-aged man, dressed in fine clothes and always trying to maintain a certain image even at home, smiled as he watched Li En return.

"You're finally back. Your sister was wondering if you got lost or if some woman had bewitched you. She was going to notify Scotland Yard to bring you back."

Li En's sister held the silver key and curled her lip. "Who cares whether this kid lives or dies? I'm afraid of disgracing the family."

The air was filled with the smell of tobacco. Li En sat opposite his sister, frowning slightly. "Father, you're smoking again? I remember the doctor told you to smoke less."

"You've definitely smoked less," Ronan, Li En's father, said with a smile. "When your mother passed away, I smoked at least a pack of cigarettes a day. Now I only smoke half a pack a day. Isn't that less?"

Li En now wonders if one day a "smoker" label will appear on his father's forehead.

"Stop talking, let's eat, I'm starving."

Li En looked in the direction of the sound, and his eyes suddenly fixed on it.

Three lines of characters also appeared above Li En's sister's head.

Name: Zoe Welsh

Sister, you have labels too?

Without batting an eye, Lee En chose to copy the label.

The replication process only takes three hours, which is quite easy for a family to have close contact for three hours.

"How's school doing lately?"

While eating the lukewarm slices of meat, Li En casually replied as his silver spoon fell into the thick vegetable soup, "It's alright. My mentor introduced me to the other professors today and said I have good talent and is planning to recommend me to participate in the Golden Dawn Open in a while."

"The Golden Dawn Open Tournament?" Zoe asked, somewhat surprised. "You mean that occult competition held internally at the University of Michigan and sponsored by the church? You can participate?"

Lee En was surprised that Zoe, a student who wasn't studying at the University of Michigan, would know about the Golden Dawn Open. "Yes, that's what my mentor said."

He also said that if he could win the open tournament, he would receive preferential treatment in the future, whether he was going to work for the government or take a position in the church.

Clutching today's Times, the father exclaimed, "Wow, amazing! I never thought you could even participate in the competition. Keep it up! If you can get into the church, our family will truly be set for life!"

"I've heard that many of the archbishops in the church have won the Golden Dawn Open Tournament. If you win, that would be incredible!"

Zoe muttered under her breath, "It's not that easy to win. Those who participate in the open tournament are all geniuses in the field of mysticism. Talent is just the most basic ticket to entry."

Clearly, she was well aware of her brother's talent and learning ability, and lacked confidence in him.

"I think there's a higher chance that Scotland Yard will catch the murderer than that he wins the title."

Upon hearing this, the father glanced at the newspaper with considerable worry. "This serial killer is indeed quite terrifying. He has killed so many people and still hasn't been caught. Are the people at Scotland Yard just sitting around doing nothing?"

"They're squandering our taxpayers' money every day, having afternoon tea that's better than what I drink. It's outrageous!"

Zoe rolled her eyes. "I guess those gentlemen and ladies up there think it's no big deal. After all, they have private security around the clock, so this serial killer can only kill the poor, and they don't care at all."

Although the serial killer's reputation has spread throughout London, in reality, only the poor and middle-class people like Lee En are truly threatened.

As for those gentlemen and ladies, in their view, the murderer could not possibly bypass their private security forces and therefore posed no threat to their existence.

Li En didn't say anything. He just silently checked the time and, after confirming that this wasn't the historical time when Jack the Ripper caused trouble, he basically ignored it.

He's not Sherlock Holmes; catching criminals isn't his job. What he needs to do now is live a good life in this world.

Of course, using labels to gain some self-protection capabilities, or even the ability to rule the world unilaterally, would be excellent.

"It's alright," the father said, having the maid pour him a cup of black tea. "I'm currently working on a big business deal, and perhaps soon we'll be able to move back to West London!"

Zoe and Lee both looked at their father with strange expressions.

West London wasn't a place where money alone could buy you a place; those who lived there were either nobles, members of Parliament, or families with a long history of public school education.

At the very least, they would be bankers or big businessmen, professions closely associated with royalty.

For ordinary wealthy people, moving into West London is simply impossible.

However, the two tacitly agreed not to disturb their father's daydream, since everyone needs dreams to support their lives.

……

Whitechapel district.

After a long day, Estelle finally returned to her crowded boarding house after passing through the tavern where temporary dockworkers gathered.

After their father's suicide, the family fortune was mostly divided up and taken back. With only a little money left, Estelle and Monroe had no choice but to come to places like Whitechapel to find cheaper accommodation.

For these scions of earls, who grew up in the affluent West London, the chaotic living environment of Whitechapel was quite a shock.

In addition to the thick fog that scorched London's lungs, the air was filled with the stench of garbage, the smell of rotting rats, and even the stench of urine from dockworkers who had been drinking.

Estelle has to keep her school uniform in the laboratory every day to ensure that it doesn't get pickled by those annoying smells.

Pushing open the door, Estelle entered the narrow, damp living room, holding the remaining half of a loaf of white bread.

An oil lamp provided a dim light, and Estelle immediately spotted the figure busy in front of the kitchen.

"Brother!" Estelle smiled brightly, patted Monroe on the back, and handed him the remaining half of the white bread. "Try this!"

Monroe was startled and almost dropped the charred spatula in his hand.

"White bread?" Monroe looked at what Estelle was holding, slightly surprised. "Why did you buy this?"

They usually eat cheap rye bread, which is hard but enough to sustain them and is inexpensive.

Monroe would only buy a piece of this white bread on Estelle's birthday.

"I didn't buy it," Estelle shook her head. "A kind person I met today gave it to me. You should try it, it's delicious, just like when I was a child!"

Kind person?

Under normal circumstances, Monroe would probably raise questions, suggesting that some bad person might think Estelle is beautiful and is trying to lower her guard in this way.

But Monroe also received help from a "kind person" today, so he really didn't know how to bring up this sentence.

What are you doing today?

Estelle looked up at the stove and immediately spotted the lamb in the frying pan.

"Wow! We're having stewed mutton today? Brother, did you find some money?"

"No," Monroe chewed on the soft white bread, which was a little hard but still much softer than the black bread. "Today... I also... met a... kind person..."

Estelle's eyes lit up immediately. "That's wonderful! There are still more good people than bad in this world. We've received help from two kind people in just one day. Does that mean our luck is starting to change?"

Monroe gave a wry smile. "Perhaps."

His gaze drifted toward the wall.

A crimson wooden disc hangs on the wall, covered with English letters, each one twisted and grotesque, looking as if it were written by a dying person on a wooden board before their death.

It was their father who secretly kept this thing called the spirit disk in their home, which is why their family was persecuted by the church.

Before his death, his father instructed Monroe to protect this item and never let it fall into the hands of the church.

Although Monroe didn't know why, he still chose to do as instructed and kept the ominous object.

This thing can be said to have brought utter destruction to their family.

At this moment, his and Estelle's luck is about to change?

Monroe found it somewhat laughable.

Perhaps the metaphors of mysticism are correct.

Death and disaster will be the symbol of their family's demise.
