Yun Mingyi remained silent for a few seconds, then looked away, neither agreeing nor disagreeing.

He lowered his head and reopened the document, his fingers pinching the foot of the page as he turned it over, his movements as usual, as if he were continuing to handle official business.

But after turning the page, his gaze remained fixed on the same line of text for a long time.

Wen Wen quietly left and sat on the guest sofa outside the office.

Time passed second by second.

The afternoon sun outside the window turned into the twilight of evening, and one office light after another turned on.

When Yun Mingyi finally closed the last document, it was almost 8 p.m.

He rubbed his temples, maneuvered his wheelchair out from behind his desk, and paused as he passed the reception area.

On the sofa, Wen Wen curled up on her side, her hand behind her face, her breathing even.

The last rays of twilight filtering through the window fell upon her quiet profile.

Yun Mingyi maneuvered his wheelchair closer, remaining silent and simply watching for a while.

Then he turned around and prepared to leave.

Suddenly, a hand reached out from the side and gently, yet firmly, grabbed his arm.

"Mingyi".

It's Wen Wen.

She wasn't asleep at all.

Her voice was hoarse with a hint of grievance, low and soft, "I miss you so much."

Yun Mingyi's movements froze for a moment.

He looked down at the hand gripping his arm, slender, slightly cool fingers, the fingertips exerting a slight pressure, as if afraid he would pull it away at any moment.

He tried to pull his hand back.

But she had already sat up, and with her other hand she reached out and wrapped her arms around his shoulders, gently resting her head in the crook of his shoulder.

Her voice came through in a muffled tone, tinged with a hint of grievance and coquettishness: "I've been thinking about you every single day since I came back to China. Why haven't you messaged me?"

Yun Mingyi was silent for a few seconds, then asked in return, "Then why didn't you send it?"

"I'm afraid of bothering you. You're so busy with rehabilitation, I don't want to." Her fingers gently tightened their grip on the fabric of his shirt, her voice growing softer and softer, "Let's not do this anymore, okay?"

Yun Mingyi closed his eyes, slowly inhaled, and then slowly exhaled.

The office was quiet, with only the sound of two people breathing together.

A moment later, he heard himself say, "Have you been waiting so long? Are you hungry?"

Wen Wen lifted her head from his shoulder, her eyes still red, but the corners of her mouth were already curved.

She shook her head, then nodded, and said softly, "I want to go to the place we used to go to."

Yun Mingyi was silent for two seconds, then nodded slightly.

As dusk settled over Beijing, in an office at the other end of the building, Yun Ziqian had just finished his work. He picked up the internal phone to have his assistant order food, and casually added a note:

"Order one for my uncle too."

The assistant responded, but then added, "Mr. Yun, I just saw the president leave with a woman."

Yun Ziqian stopped flipping through the documents, looked up, and frowned: "What woman?"

"I couldn't see clearly. It's an unfamiliar face. I've never seen it before." The assistant shook his head.

Yun Ziqian put down his pen, picked up his phone, and dialed Yun Mingyi's assistant's number.

The call connected, and the confirmation from the other end caused his face to gradually darken under the light.

He hung up the phone, watching the screen go dark, his knuckles turning white from clenching his fists.

His eyes were sinister, and he gritted his teeth: "Wen, Wen."

How could she possibly dare to appear in front of her uncle again!

Yun Ziqian's face revealed raw anger. He slammed his fist on the table in frustration, his breathing becoming heavier.

"Damn it."

A moment later, a cold glint flashed in Yun Ziqian's eyes. He picked up his phone, searched for something, and muttered a curse under his breath:

"Damn it, I already warned you."

After saying that, Yun Ziqian dialed a phone number.

-

Yun Ziang stood at the entrance of the supermarket on the first floor of the hospital, his phone pressed to his ear, reporting the situation at the construction site to Yun Ziqian.

In the supermarket, Xiao Jin was leaning over the sausage grilling machine next to the hot drink counter, her little hands gripping the edge of the glass counter, standing on tiptoe, her nose almost touching the sausage grilling machine.

The sausages turned slowly on the roller, their skins roasted to a golden brown with a slight char, sizzling and glistening with oil, their aroma wafting into her nose.

She took a deep breath, then another, her eyes fixed on the sausages, as if performing some kind of sacred waiting ritual.

"Do you want some? Uncle will buy it for you."

A voice suddenly came from above her head.

Xiao Jin didn't turn her head; her gaze remained fixed on the grilled sausage. She shook her head with remarkable resolve.

"No need, my grand-nephew has already paid for Xiao Jin."

"Xiao Jin is waiting for the sausages to grill until they're crispy and golden brown; that's when they taste best!"

After she finished speaking, she turned her head and looked up at the person who had spoken.

He was a man in his early thirties, wearing a well-made gray shirt with the cuffs casually rolled up to his forearms, revealing his muscular forearms.

He was born with a refined and gentle appearance, wearing thin-rimmed silver glasses, but the lazy smile in his eyes somewhat diluted his refined demeanor, giving him an inexplicably roguish air.

He looked down at her, a smile playing on his lips, as if he had discovered something interesting.

Then he reached out and ruffled Xiao Jin's hair, the pressure just right, his tone filled with genuine praise:

"You're so cute. Uncle will treat you to a grilled sausage, and maybe one more, okay?"

Xiao Jin looked at his face and blinked.

Those dark, bright eyes lingered on his face for two seconds, then without saying a word, turned their head away.

The man paused for a moment, then his smile deepened.

He crouched down, his gaze level with Xiao Jin's, and gently poked her chubby cheeks with a finger, like teasing a sulking kitten:

"Why are you ignoring your uncle?"

Xiao Jin turned her face to the side, dodging his fingers, her voice crisp and clear, carrying an undisguised disdain:

"You're a bad person, Xiao Jin doesn't talk to bad people."

Upon hearing this, the man raised an eyebrow, showing no anger but rather a genuinely amused expression.

He tilted his head to look at Xiao Jin, the lazy nonchalance in his eyes fading slightly, replaced by a look of inquiry:

"How is Uncle a bad person? Little one, why don't you tell me?"

Xiao Jin turned around, her dark eyes staring straight into his, and said with a stern face:

"The Queen Mother of the Underworld is pregnant—there's something fishy going on in her belly."

The air was quiet for a second.

Then the man laughed.

It wasn't the polite, socially acceptable kind of laugh, but rather a laugh triggered by something truly unexpected, a low, deep laugh emanating from the chest, the eyes curving behind the glasses, and laugh lines spreading from the corners of the eyes.

He squatted on the ground, his arms resting on his knees, looking up at the little girl who wasn't even as tall as his waist, and shook his head, his tone full of undisguised interest:

"That's interesting. You little one, you know quite a lot."

His gaze lingered on her face for a moment, as if trying to remember her appearance.

Then he looked over her shoulder and saw Yun Ziang hanging up the phone and walking this way from the supermarket entrance.

He stood up, his long, slender fingers gently rubbing Xiao Jin's head again, this time with less pressure, his tone carrying a hint of regret:

See you next time, little one.

After saying that, he turned and walked towards another exit of the supermarket, his pace neither fast nor slow, and his gray shirt-clad figure quickly disappeared behind the shelves.

Xiao Jin stuck out her tongue at his back and made a few impolite "lè lè lè lè lè" sounds.

Yun Ziang walked over and saw Xiao Jin sticking her tongue out at the air. He followed her gaze to the other end of the supermarket and only managed to catch a blurry glimpse of her back.

He looked down at Xiao Jin and asked, "What's wrong? Who was that person?"

"A bad guy," Xiao Jin said succinctly, retracting her tongue.

Yun Zi'ang frowned slightly and glanced in that direction again, but the person was already gone: "Did he bully you?"

"No, not at all," Xiao Jin tilted her head, as if recalling the details from earlier, and then concluded matter-of-factly, "but Xiao Jin doesn't like him."

The sausage grilling machine beeped.

The clerk handed over the grilled sausage, which Xiao Jin took with both hands. She puffed out her cheeks, blew on it, and skipped and hopped to the chair next to her. Her short legs swung around, and you couldn't tell that she had just had a fight with a strange man.

She took a small bite cautiously, hissed from the heat, but couldn't bear to spit it out, and mumbled:

"So delicious!"

Yun Ziang sat down next to her, just about to ask her what she wanted to eat tomorrow, when Xiao Jin suddenly put down the sausage, as if she remembered something important. She turned to look at him, a small piece of crispy sausage crumb still stuck to the corner of her mouth, but her expression was unusually serious:

"Grand-nephew, we have important business to attend to tomorrow."

"Important business, what important business?" Yun Zi'ang didn't react for a moment, paused, and hesitated before asking:

"Tomorrow I'll take you to that famous South China Sea restaurant, the one Zhang Ting mentioned last time, coconut chicken hot pot with roast suckling pig?"

Xiao Jin's eyes lit up instantly, her cheeks puffed out with the sausage she hadn't yet swallowed, and she nodded her head several times: "Okay, okay!"

He tapped twice, then suddenly stopped, shaking his head like a puppy shaking off water, trying to banish the image of the delicious food from his mind. "No, no! That's not what I'm talking about!"

She looked at Yun Zi'ang, a rare look of disappointment appearing on her face. "The important thing is to find that Mr. Li! The one Sang Dong mentioned!"

Yun Ziang suddenly remembered.

Mr. Li, whom Sang Dong mentioned before.

This person lives in Nanhai City.

He said he would investigate, but a series of events followed, and he almost forgot about it.

"Right, right, that Mr. Li," Yun Zi'ang slapped his forehead, "Sang Dong said he's in the South China Sea. So you came here specifically to see him?"

"It's because he's in the South China Sea that Xiao Jin came along," Xiao Jin said, taking a bite of a grilled sausage, her cheeks bulging. "My nephew's death is over, now it's time to deal with this scoundrel. He sent so many bad things to Shanghai, not just Yu Ziping, there must be others who were victimized. Xiao Jin is going to find him."

Yun Ziang looked into Xiao Jin's unusually serious eyes, remained silent for two seconds, and then reached out to wipe the crumbs from the corner of her mouth:

"Okay. I'll take you first thing tomorrow morning. But you should finish your sausage first, it won't taste good when it gets cold."

The next morning, Yun Ziang drove the car he had borrowed from Zhang Ting, with Xiao Jin in tow, and navigated to the address Sang Dong had given him.

The address points to an old residential building in the old town of Nanhai City. The building is at least twenty or thirty years old, with several tiles missing from the exterior walls, and the security door at the entrance of the building is rusty and the access control system has been broken for a long time.

Yun Ziang parked the car, checked the house number, and led Xiao Jin up to the fifth floor.

The hallway was dimly lit, and one of the motion-activated lights was broken. He took out his phone, turned on the flashlight, found the security door with the upside-down "福" (good fortune) character pasted on it, and knocked three times.

The sound of slippers shuffling came from inside, and the door was pulled open a crack, revealing the face of a young man in his early twenties.

The man was burly, wearing a faded basketball jersey that revealed his thick arms, and his face showed the impatience of someone who had just been woken up.

"Who should I look for?"

Yun Ziang was stunned for a moment.

The "Mr. Li" that Sang Dong mentioned should be a seasoned veteran in his forties or fifties, but the man in front of him was too young.

He tentatively asked, "Are you Mr. Li?"

The man's impatience deepened instantly, as if he had heard a tremendous insult: "What Mr. Li? My surname is Zhang!"

After saying that, he slammed the door shut.
